Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Does it have a 2.1 input

All four of the HDMI inputs on the LG CX 55 inch Class 4K Smart OLED TV w/ AI ThinQ® (54.6” Diag), Model # OLED55CXPUA are full spec HDMI 2.1 ports and they are all HDCP 2.2 compliant. HDMI IN 2/eARC supports HDMI eARC functionality^IFV

2. Does it have 2.1 hdmi?

Only partial 2.1 support. It does have 2.1 ports but the hardware is only designed to handle 40Gbps maximum instead of the full 48Gbps the specification allows. This is because the display panels can only display a 10-bit 4K picture at 120hz. The HDMI 2.1 spec allows for a 12-bit signal at 4K and 120hz which the panel is incapable of doing.

3. Does the optional protection plan cover burn-in?

The Geek Squad plan is NOT ridiculous, if you consider it’s the only plan you can buy anywhere that covers burn-in. And, that’s exactly where I will be buying this tv from.

4. What refresh rate can cx do at 1080p, 1440p, and 4k when connected to a pc?

The LG CX 55 inch Class 4K Smart OLED TV w/ AI ThinQ® (54.6” Diag), Model # OLED55CXPUA will support 1920 x 1080 @ 120Hz, 2560 x 1440 @ 120Hz when HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color is set to On, and 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz when connected to a PC^IFV

Updated review (10/13/2020)

Mounting was a breeze. Took about 10 minutes to screw the mount into the back of the TV. Most of that time was ensuring that I attached to the desired holes on the mount, as the mount supported attaching the TV at multiple locations. It does take 2 people to mount. I don’t care how strong you think you are. It’s not a weight issue so much as it’s a wingspan issue. The required placement of your hands, so you don’t damage the EXTREMELY thin screen, doesn’t allow for only holding the entire TV with 2 hands. I solicited the help of my visiting in-law. We picked it up, hooked the mount to the wall and presto we were done. Plugged in the power and cables and ready to watch.

Recommendation: Pay the extra money and get an AC outlet directly behind the TV. They sell power cable in-wall kits that don’t require an electrician and I’m sure those work just as well. Basically those are just cable routing outlets that allow you to use an electrical extender to bring power from the outlet behind your ground-level furniture thru the wall up to the extension “outlet”. It’s cool because it’s really just a fancy extension cord so you aren’t faced with the cost of an electrician to install a new outlet. Point is…get an extender or a new outlet. Either way you’re not going to want to see cables dangling down the wall after mounting your beautiful, expensive TV. I had to get a real outlet installed because the wall I mounted on was an outdoor perimeter wall, so the thickness between the dry wall and the concrete block left about 1.25 inches of space. My electrician had to feed the cables thru the wall until his hands were bleeding (better him than me) as the space was so small. The wall mount had to be drilled thru the drywall directly into the concrete also. Upside, that TV is never falling off the wall. I could hang 10 TVs off that mount. I jest.

Also I bought an LED strip that is stuck to the back of the TV. It plugs directly into the USB input on the back of the TV so it turns on/off with the TV. You can change the colors but I just go with a soft white and it really compliments the TV and provides an outer glow which can be seen in my attached photos.

Original review…
Everyone talks about the amazing picture quality so I won’t bother with that. Let’s just say it’s incredible.

Something that really impressed me is the thickness of the actual screen. It’s thinner than my iPhone X. The “downside” to the screen being this thin is when we lifted it I was concerned about applying too much pressure and potentially causing damage as it flexed. The instructions discuss how to hold the TV when lifting it whereas most of the pressure is actually to the bottom half of the TV so it isn’t really a problem but something to be cognizant of.

It’s easy to access all the inputs/outputs on the back. 4 of the HMDI ports are actually on the left side (facing the TV). The power cord is on the right side, although rear facing. That’s not a complaint, I just want to provide that information.

Setup couldn’t be easier. I had my cable box connected thru HDMI and my PS4 connected thru HDMI as well. Then I turned on the TV for the first time. Over the course of a few minutes the TV detected everything that was plugged in and asked a question “are these the correct components plugged in?” Aside from providing the wifi password I didn’t have to get involved in the setup at all. After everything was setup I plugged in my Bose Soundbar. I tried using the HDMI eArc plug which failed as it always has (same lack of success on my previous TV). I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to get the Bose Soundbar to work is thru the optical cable, and I don’t put the blame on LG. That is certainly a Bose shortcoming. Regardless, I plugged it in thru the optical port. You have to navigate to the “All Settings” menu thru the TV to the sound settings. There is a selection to use Optical, TV, Both, etc. When I made the correct choice it worked as expected.

The TV also comes with an over the air LG TV service. That was completely unexpected. I confused that with the cable provided by my Spectrum cable box. Once I realized what was happening I was pleasantly excited. I don’t know if I will use it, but considering the cost of cable it is something I will investigate further.

We had the Amazon Fire TV on our older TV and don’t need it anymore on this new TV. All those same services that we use, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Disney Plus and Hulu are built in. As expected an enormous number of other services are also available. That is very convenient.

In conclusion I recommend this TV purchase with zero hesitation..

My friend, who works at the AppleTV engineering department told me to purchase this TV when he found out that I’m in the market for a new one, and after soliciting his advice. He mentioned the older LG gens put some of the existing LEDs to shame, and I can see why!

I have to say; despite the exorbitant price, it is the best picture quality in the market. It’s flawless; the colors, refresh rate, and blacks are true to the color that I have ever experienced on a modern TV that wasn’t plasma. It’s an absolute gem, and I don’t regret my decision despite the price falling by a few hundred since my purchase. The remote is actually decent, it’s responsive contrary to what others might have alluded to, and it pairs well with other devices. The internal speaker is phenomenal, to the point that I no longer need the Bose soundbar.

I won’t nitpick the software; I could do without it; I appreciate that they allow you not to track the user behavior and delete tracking data, but that’s the extent to which I chose to pay attention to the TV’s smart features. I’m a big fan of AppleTV, and that does an excellent job both in the software and performance departments. You’re not buying a TV for the software, you buy it for the hardware, and that’s where LG shines. What I have heard is that some of the Sony backplanes are LG, though I haven’t corroborated that.

Mounting the TV is not for the faint of heart; I attempted, in the end, chose to pay a professional to do the installation. Their immediate reaction was to drill holes into the studs and not use the hardware supplied by LG, I second that decision. Their second reaction was how thin the TV is. Finally, you have several options to make the TV absolutely flush against the wall, though, when you think about it, the existing mounting bracket does a pretty good job of that, so don’t bother paying money for the recessed box install.

I regret it not being an 86″ since we have more real estate on the wall to fill with this magnificent work of technology, but I understand why a larger screen will not guarantee quality. Purchase it; you will not regret it..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. How deep are the legs spread- ie how deep of a surface does the tv need to sit on?

The bottom of the legs are just under 12”. I have it sitting on a 12” shelf and that works but will look for something a bit deeper.

2. Is this the 2019 version?

Notice that it is the Generation 1 and not the newest Generation 2.

3. The listing seems incorrect, you state quantum but the model number is for p series, not p series quantum. pq65-f1 or p659-g1? which is shipped?

The 2019 P-series Quantum sets are P659-G1 and P759-G1. There’s also a Quantum X model that’s above this one which has a model number of PX65-G1.

4. Have 2 vizios; neither shows 4:3 aspect. go wide > normal but picture stays fullscreen&distorted. problem w. all vizios? sony shows same dvd correct

I had exactly this problem.Turns out I had to go into my Sony Blu-ray player and reset the output so I could get 4:3 output.Something about the output from the Blu-ray player was confusing the Vizio TV.You can also do offset and scaling changes for each external input but it’s not enough to correct a 4:3 signal being scaled to 16:9

Before purchasing my 65″ VIZIO Quantum 4K, I literally spent months doing research.

Some background: I’m a gamer and streamer. In my home, we use PlayStation Vue for television, I play a lot of PS4, and we watch Netflix and Amazon Prime seemingly every night. The TV is a pretty important fixture in the home, to say the least. Oh, and I’m also obsessed with watching sports on TV – NFL/NBA/MLB and Premier League soccer. From my perspective, the TV had to deliver for each of those mediums.

I knew I wanted either a 65″ or 75″ 4K TV, and was pretty certain I was going to end up with a Samsung, Sony, or LG. After taking my first trip to Best Buy to see a few of the models up close and in person, I realized that Vizio had to be included in the discussion. Compared to the other sets, the color pop on the Vizio was simply something I couldn’t ignore.

While continuing my research, I started trending towards the VIZIO.. which kind of surprised me. It met all of my requirements though! Deep blacks with a 240hz refresh rate were a must. I was coming from a 60″ Samsung Plasma with a 600hz refresh rate. Sure, only 1080P.. but I had a hard time justifying a new TV since I loved it.

I also knew I was looking for either a 65″ or 75″ TV, and 4K with HDR was pretty much assumed as well.

For those of you looking at other 4K’s, I challenge you to take a super hard look at this one from VIZIO. The bevel-less design is gorgeous, the color and vibrancy are amazing, and the 240hz refresh rate means 4K content is truly amazing.

I did end up wall mounting this, and the result is amazing. Oh, and I was pretty sold on getting a 75″ version until I measured it on my wall. If you’re thinking the 65″ is not going to be big enough, you may want to measure the dimensions on your wall with painter tape. Sitting about 6 feet away, this TV feels HUGE. I think the fact that it’s so bright plays a factor as well. Having it wall mounted with a slight tilt down makes a big difference as well, in my opinion.

I did read a few reviews that said the side-angle viewing was disappointing.. but honestly I just don’t understand where they’re coming from. Frankly, I vehemently disagree that this TV is lacking in any area.

In Summary: this VIZIO is OUTSTANDING. Better than many of the more-expensive sets out there, and I can’t say enough about how amazing it is. Going from 1080P to 4K was always going to be a big step forward for me, but this particular set has straight up blown away my expectations. For the price, I don’t think you can do any better at all. Don’t even hesitate for a second. This is the one..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. How far away should you be to get the best viewing from a 70″ television?

The earlier rules of thumb for distance from a tv set were based on lower resolution screens where the issue was ‘how far away do I have to be so the lines on the picture aren’t visible’.Now the new issue with HDTV is ‘how close should I sit for maximum realism’.The answer is in part subjective, and as such there’s no exact answer, but a widely used rule of thumb is to take one tenth the screen diagonal in inches and call that the minimum distance in feet, and then increase it 50% for the maximum distance.Somewhere in that zone is optimum. So, for a 70″ screen, try not to sit closer than 7′ and if you are more than about 10.5′ away, you’re losing the maximum impact of the viewing experience.Source :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimum_HDTV_viewing_distance

2. Does Vizio E70 has an app for Amazon Prime

I purchased a 60 inch Vizio a week ago and it does have an app for Amazon Prime and it works fine. However, I do like the Roku app better – plus the Roku has many more apps – I may add a Roku to this TV even though the TV does have the wireless interface. Mike K.

3. warrantee

sorry, don’t know. I do know Costco takes back no questions asked. But I wanted to save on sales tax so with free delivery a better deal here.

4. what is the input lag?

Tim, I’m not a gamer therefore would have little reason to ask about the input lag. However, the sound synchronization is poor albeit adjustable. Optimizing it for DVD’s doesn’t hold true for satellite or local programing. I got tired of tweaking it and just live with whatever lag there may be. SOUND SUCKS!!! Ron

I just got mine (though not on Amazon) and I consider this TV to be an upgrade to my Samsung PN63C8000 plasma TV. It has one major flaw that will turn some people away.

The Great Vizio Myth:

First of all, I want to address a myth that is going around about this TV. It’s being said that this TV has a “soft appearance that is hard to describe and can’t be fixed”. These reviews belong in the sci-fi horror fiction section. Use the settings that I post in this review, and it not only goes away, but the picture is about as good as my expensive plasma.

Cons:

1) The viewing angle is nowhere near as good as my plasma and probably not as good as other LED TVs. The perfect viewing angles appear to be within 30 degrees of the center. Therefore, if you position yourself at a 45 degree angle from where you intend to put it, know that the picture will be slightly degraded at that point. The color suffers the most, in my opinion. This is the one great flaw of this TV, which doesn’t bother me at all. Take into consideration how far away you will be sitting and the size of the 60 degree viewing cone at that distance.

2) Out-of-box settings are unacceptable and the TV is extremely difficult to calibrate – BUT! you have me here to help you, so you can breath easy now. I spent hours on this and used special tools to get it right.

3) The stand is very basic, but very stable. From stand to the bottom of the viewable screen, there is 3-1/4″ clearance. From the top of the stand to the viewable screen, there are 2.5″ clearance. Personally, I use a TV stand that has two middle compartments and I put my center speaker into one of them, pointed slightly up.

Pros:

EVERYTHING else.

Examples:

1) Extremely bright. When I saw the brightness possibilities of this screen, I tried to get my Samsung to be that bright. I didn’t even get close. You can make it dark if you want – and the TV will even automatically sense the amount of light in the room and respond to it, if you choose.
2) Matte Screen – even now, I can see myself in my Samsung. My Vizio has no glare or reflection. I may not be able to live without this in the future. This feature is high on my list now.
3) Extremely configurable. When you change picture settings on this TV, the device responds in a meaningful way. My Samsung, on the other hand, has many settings that appear to do nothing at all, even if you shift the slider from 0 to 100 – no change.
4) Price. Black Friday was good to me this year. Even at the current Amazon price, I would buy it over a major brand. Mark my words, Vizio will be a major brand some day. I have yet to find one person that I know personally that does not approve of this company for several purchases of their products.
5) Color. With my settings, I consider it to be very close to my expensive Samsung.
6) Smart Features. Netflix, Amazon, Hulu Plus, YouTube, and a few others.
7) Remote Control with Keyboard. Searching for shows on Netflix and Amazon has never been easier, due to the fact that you can flip the remote over and type on a QWERTY keyboard. They were also smart enough to put directional arrows and the four color buttons on the back. That helps a lot. There are also Amazon and Netflix buttons on the front of the remote that will get a lot of use. An M-Go button that won’t get much use at all… is also present. The size of the remote is compact enough that I don’t have to reposition it to reach buttons with my thumb.

In a day in age where ILLogitech is screwing up our Harmony remotes by separating the buttons on either side of a big display screen, this is a refreshing and intellectual advancement in human sanity. Thank you Vizio, for the grand remote!

Hints:

1) If you’re having trouble with Amazon Instant Video, select “Your Video Library” and you will be able to connect your Amazon account to the TV and get the free Amazon Prime content if you’re a member.

My Settings:

Press the Menu button, then select Picture and press OK.

Picture Mode: Standard
Backlight: 88 (anything you want – this is the total brightness of the screen)
Brightness: 50 (this setting will affect other settings. Backlight does NOT affect other settings)
Contrast: 80
Color: 60
Tint: 0
Sharpness: 5

Select “More” at the bottom and press OK.
Select “Color Temperature” and press OK.

Color Temperature: Normal
** I did not change the values below, they were all 128 by default for the “Normal” setting. **
Red Gain: 128
Green Gain: 128
Blue Gain: 128
Red Offset: 128
Green Offset: 128
Blue Offset: 128

Press the Back button on the remote.
Select “Advanced Picture” and press OK.

Smooth Motion Effect: Off
Real Cinema Mode: Smooth
Noise Reduction: Low
MPEG NR: Low
Color Enhancement: Normal
Adaptive Luma: Medium
Film Mode: Off
Backlight Control: DCR
Ambient Light Sensor: Off (This will change the Backlight intensity based on how much light is in your room at the moment. If you like that idea, turn it on after you finalize your settings. You may or may not like it afterward.)

Press the Exit button. You’re done. I suggest you pop in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and watch the beginning through the introductory story of the Dwarven kingdom. You will see bright scenes of landscapes, dark scenes of the golden treasure room, skin tones, and much more. It’s the perfect test movie.

Edits –>
* A lot of people are having trouble with TV sizes and model numbers. Vizio made the poor decision of grouping many sizes and models together and called them all their “Razor” line of TVs. This collection is not uniform and my settings will not work with all of them. My expectation is that these settings will work with TVs where the model number ends in “A3″, which includes a 60″ and the 70” that this review is actually in regard. You can try these settings for other models if you want, but I suggest paying more attention to Vizio’s advanced features than the standard features. That’s where I found the best approach when I was figuring all this out. Good luck!
* 02/05/2014 – I’m not sure why, but the TV wouldn’t work tonight. I tried pressing power and input repeatedly, with no response. I removed the power cable from the back of the TV for several seconds and then replaced it. The TV is back to normal operation.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. What is the distance between the stands. The manual doesn’t say and I’d rather not buy a new stand.

The stands are reversible to buy you an inch or so difference in width if you splay them in instead of the default out.Get a good stand that can support this thing. The cheapo ones may result in a trashed TV screen.Wall mount is probably better unless your wife likes nice wood stands of high grade furniture quality or you have a brick wall behind it.

2. how is this tv for watching sports like hockey? Is the refresh rate fast enough? is there any blur or streaking?

there is no blur or streaking on sports games like football or soccer

3. I see all the talk tablet / phone connection. Will this work with Apple phones and iPads?

Works fine on my android. Can’t see there would be an issue as the Smartcast app is available in the Apple app store 🙂

4. How do you calibrate the tv settings with this tv? the supplied remote is very basic and you can’t adjust the color settings with it. thank you.

If your Android Phone or Tablet is running version 4.4.2 or higher, check for a `Cast’ option by opening the devices Settings, then selecting Display, and then looking for a Cast or a Cast Screen option

I got this “display” (as it will be henceforth known since it doesn’t quality as a TV due to the lack of integrated coax connection and watered down remote) from Costco online, and it’s been a delight to watch content on. It’s in my living room which has a lot of light during the day due to windows, and it’s a long thin room leading into the dining area. All that to say, it’s not in a home theater and I am not a videophile though I do have certain standards and am very consumer-electronics-inclined.

The display itself is fantastic. Small pleasing bezel, matte screen is not as bad as I’ve seen in other screens. I prefer a straight specular reflective surface but this matte surface and coating is growing on me. The screen can be very bright, but in my environment, it also does a great job on blacks. Of course, this isn’t a reference-series model… the price is enough to reflect that, but given the size and price, it is a spectacular screen. Great connectivity with Google Cast, ethernet, AC-speed wifi, 4 HDMI ports. On-screen information display is very modern and sleek. It’s a fast responding TV. The legs are very solid and attractive. I’ll be attaching it to the entertainment center it is on for accidental safety reasons, however, it’s very very well balanced and there is basically no chance it’ll come down unless you force it to from the top.

Some of the less good things about the product are:
– The remote. It’s very very very barebones. You can turn the screen on or off, change the input, change the picture color style, change the screen aspect, play or pause Google Cast content, change volume, and link the TV to a SmartCast app. It’s a nice and small, comfortable remote, but not a lot of functionality. Also, there is NO way to get to the display’s settings apart from the SmartCast app.

– Probably the *worst* part of the product is the Vizio SmartCast app. I’m on Android and I cannot pair the tv with the phone using Bluetooth, I have to use Wifi to get the display to connect to the app, which then allows you to set up the display in the menu and enable its own internet connectivity. The app also periodically turns on by itself on my phone to check if there is something to connect to. Whether there is or not, the app never says there is… It just pops up a temporary notification. I guess Vizio doesn’t know how to program an app that does background tasks correctly. And frankly, this app shouldn’t be running in the background unless I’ve opened it. Anyway, it’s fine for changing the display settings… and it is nice to see the changes in the display immediately when you change an option. But apart from accessing the display’s settings, you don’t otherwise need to use the app. You can do things like change the volume or input and things like that.. even turn it off (turning it on has never worked yet). But it’s the least pleasant part of the experience of this display.

Conclusion:
It’s a really solid display, very fast, responsive, modern, and FANTASTIC value for price. Even priced a little more I think it’s still worth it. I especially love that it is a very very paired down smart tv. I hate all the menu and redundant junk that other vendors like Samsung and others add to the tv.. making them slow and … redundant (he said redundantly). I have a Fire TV box for Amazon Video and Netflix (and whatever else comes with it) and I have my Wii U, Computer, and Bluray. They all work better than an integrated TV software system. The only addition is Google Cast and it basically has no overhead. It’s like they installed a Chromecast into the TV and turned on the 4K abilities. It’s fantastic. So yea, I definitely love this display. The app needs work, and the remote is fine but basic. I’ll likely setup a universal remote. 4K looks spectacular from YouTube, Amazon, and Netflix. 1080P also looks amazing. I’ve set all my input color settings to Computer because it seems to get white more correct without being too saturated. I do turn down the brightness, but otherwise, it looks great. I look forward to someone doing a proper calibration on it.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

PS: I have a 5.1 Vizio soundbar system with ARC input. I connected the HDMI-ARC from the display to the HDMI-ARC on the soundbar and it worked alright for a little while, and then stopped working. I had to unplug the display to get the soundbar to be recognized again… after some research I learned that: 1. ARC is NOT better quality than Optical audio, it is in fact the same. It’s only a convenience to be able to control the tv or soundbar with the other’s remote. 2. It does not allow for transmission of copy-protected 4K transmission when the video is passing from soundbar to TV over that ARC port. (maybe that’s just the soundbar’s fault). 3. ARC and CEC (what needs to be enabled for ARC to work) are very temperamental and are not very stable solutions for audio. This I confirmed first hand. So I’ve been using the optical out for audio and it’s been working perfectly fine. I don’t really knock Vizio or the display for all this, I think it’s more an issue of the ARC technology. And for the most part it’s pretty unnecessary..
