Obviously the price difference for starters, the milwaukee unit also uses a 9 volt battery versus the latter of AAA. i hjave used the milwaukee unit many times and had very little issues. The only downside to this unit is that you need to keep fresh 9 volt batteries on hand. it does use alot of battery power.

At the beginning of your brew day. I’ve had the meter for 2 years, and though I check it every time I start, I have only had to recalibrate it about 3x. It is a rock solid instrument and a pleasure to use. You will find yourself checking gravity more often as it is so easy and efficient. Don’t forget you will need to use a calculation tool (ie: Brewersfriend.com) to account for the alcohol in solution when doing a final gravity reading with it.

3. will this work industry to measure ice cream?

I’m not sure it is accurate enough to use with ice cream, plus there is a little lip around the lens that would be difficult to keep clean enough to maintain acceptable sanitation levels. The final concern is the fact ice cream is opaque and the device requires a level of translucency to properly determine sugar levels, so I would have to say no, it won’t work for ice cream in an industry setting, or at all really.

4. Will this work with milling machine coolant that may have tramp oil in it?

Doubtfull. it is only calibrated to detect sugar density. I don’t think it would detect other substances.

Hi Russell M. thank you for your patience. The outsize of t he sample holder is metal, the inner part of it is stainless steel, thank you and welcome to us.

3. i purchase this product to use with honey, after i set in zero y load the honey on the chamber and it mark HHH is this ok? how should i use?

The Pal-1 will only measure up to 53% on the brix scale. The sugar content may be too high for the machine. For measuring honey, I would recommend the PAL-22S or the PAL-2 instead.

4. Is this refractometer good for testing different oils in water?

Wouldn’t say so as brix measures sugar content of an aqueous solution (one degree Brix is 1 gram of sucrose in 100 grams of solution)
