Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. The press release for the P10 states it is USB 3.1 Gen 1 capable but it doesn’t advertise it in the current listing. Can anyone confirm this?

The USB Forum is confusing as hell. Are you ready? Okay:

USB 3.0 is SuperSpeed, which would make it too easy to determine which USB is which, so of course they don’t use that name. So it’s called 3.0, except now it’s not. 3.0 and 3.1 gen 1 are the same thing, same speed and all (5gbps). Then you have USB 3.1 gen 2. It’s a genuine upgrade over gen 1 speed, but PSYCH! Name swap again! Now 3.1 is 3.2 gen 1, and 3.2 gen 2, and now there is a new one called 3.2 gen 2 by 2! It’s maddening!

Anyway, in summary, yes this drive is USB 3.0, or 3.1 gen 1, or 3.2 gen 1, whichever you wanna call it.

2. Does it come with the necessary usb cable? lots of marketing blah-blah-blah but little useful information.

It should come with a 2-3 foot long cable 3.0 cable (B-type to A-type). I have yet to buy an external USB HDD or HDD enclosure without some kind of USB cable.

3. Can I use this hard drive for backing up my PC for pictures, movies, excel, word files?

yes, it works just like a normal external harddrive, just more reliable and has a quicker read /write speed

4. Where is this made? no more ccp stuff for this household.

Nothing Racist about asking if a Hard-drive is made in China and wondering if it is made by the CCP. It’s a very valid question. Given the tactics of the CCP.

Upon inspection, I found a Western Digital drive with a model number of “WD50NMZW”. The interface is USB and the control board soldered on. It’s possible the developer re-used old controller board design, because as you look to the left of the USB port, you see solder points that match a SATA port, in the location where you’d expect to find a port.

In any case, I learned what I needed, put the drive back together and now it serves me as an external USB drive.

update, 25 October 2020: Still using it, still works great..

2. I am not computer saavy. can i just plug it in & expect it to work, or do i need to pay extra for the expert installation? are they trustworthy?

Yes, you can open it out of the box and plug it into your computer’s USB. The cable you need to do this comes with it. Some formats are better for Macs and others better for PC but don’t worry about it, the instructions will explain it to you. And no, you do not need any expert installation for this.

3. do you need the batery for it to work ?

You do not need a battery. It gets power from the USB port.

Thanks to Amanda who shared how to format this for a current Mac. Here is a slightly updated version of her instructions:
Open Disk Utilities.
From the View menu, choose “Show All Devices.”
Select WD Elements on the left side of the window.
Right click and choose “Erase” from the pop-up menu.
Create a name and choose “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” assuming you have a current vision of OS-X.

I followed these directions, and it was effortless. I am using this as a Time Machine backup disk. I keep it plugged into the USB hub that I connect my computer to when it is on my desk. From reviews, I see that some people have had disk failures, but I also do a cloud-based backup. But that only backs up my most recent version of each file. Time Machine gives me hourly backups for the last 24 hours, so I can recover something I’ve inadvertently overwritten.

I was using an old Synology 212+ for Time Machine, but after moving, it asked me to reinstall, crashed in the process of doing that, and lost all my data. RAID is useless in that situation. I’ve thought about buying a newer, faster NAS, but that’s expensive, and decided to go this route at least for the time being. Unlike the Synology, which was accessible by WiFi, this won’t do backups when I take my laptop away from my desk, but I do my most critical work at my desk in any event.

I bought this rather than the $5 cheaper, newer version because I prefer the rounded corners to sharp edges. The rough surface doesn’t seem to show fingerprints, a problem reported by users of the shiny newer version. Amazing that 4TB can fit into such a tiny form factor and be such a reasonable price. I am delighted..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. How many hours of music can this hold

An MP3 is about 1-2 meg/minute depending on bit rate, so in the worst case, say 4-8 million minutes depending on bit rate, so it’s about66,666 to 123,000 hours depending on file size. About 7.6 – 15 years of continuous recording. Chances are, unless you’re loading it with porn (and maybe not even then!) you probably can’t fill this before it wears out. Trust me, by the time you even come close to filling this drive, a 40TB drive will be about the same price, you’ll buy that, then copy everything over, format it, then offer it to your kid, who will wonder what can he do with a drive this small.

2. Can you use this for PS4?

I had this hard drive for awhile as a spare backup drive in my PC. I plugged it into the front port of my PS4 and instantly gained 4TB of space. It requires no extra power source, the PS4 will format it and you can play games on it just the same as installing to your HDD inside the PS4. I don’t notice any speed issues on my PRO, it runs the same speed. It’s perfect to stop you from having to shuffle games off and on the limited 1TB in the system.

3. What is the warranty? i can’t find any info on it at seagate except that there isn’t a warranty via seagate based on the serial number i entered.

The warranty in the US is 1 year. I found the answer on Seagate’s data sheet for this product from their website (which Google was kind enough to find for me, I couldn’t find it digging on their website). It depends on your region.

https://www.seagate.com/files/www-content/datasheets/pdfs/portable-drive-2-5-DS1985-1-1804US-en_US.pdf

4. Usb 2.0. Support ?

Yes. 2.0 and 3.0.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Is this 7200 or 5400rpm?

Only the 1 TB (#ST1000DM010)and 2 TB (#ST2000DM008) models are 7200, all the larger models are 5400.Both the llisted speed and model number change in the product description as you pick different disk size options.

This is consistent with Seagate’s website — From the home page, drill down through (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda – Learn More, and then click the 3.5 inch models tab (NOT the 3.5 inch PRO models tab). Then click on the data sheet next to any model to get a PDF with a table containing all of the models along with their drive speeds and other specs..

2. Is a sata cable included in the package?

Cables not included. You can buy a SATA data cable and likely the appropriate power cable for your computer right here on Amazon. Depending on your power supply, the power cable may already be connected to it in your computer — some have that and some do not.

3. Is this really 7200rpm? the model number suggests otherwise.

I got the ST4000DM004 which claims 7200 rpm on amazon and my computer is reporting it has a media rotation rate of 5425 rpm

4. Is the 2tb (st2000dm008) internal hard drive cmr or smr?

The 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB drives are all SMR, which means they are slow for random writes and not suitable as boot drives. (Google “Why SMR drives are sub-optimal for write-intensive workloads”.)

Put in the name you want the drive to be (or not. I changed the name later). Make sure it says mac os then click erase.

I had one hiccup. All the above didnt work at first. D: It just kept ejecting it. The other reviewers didnt let me down, though. I just RESTARTED my computer and tried again. Worked perfectly.

After it erased and formatted it’ll ask if you want it to back up your whole computer. I picked ill decide later. I just want to save things to it selectively. And thats that. Started saving stuff right then.

Side note: when i first plugged it in my computer recognized it and asked if i wanted to back up my whole computer. I chose decide later initially and thats when i had to go through all the steps above because it wouldn’t let me move files into it manually. Now I can! 😀 hope this helps.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Can this be used as a normal hdd storage drive for a desktop pc?

I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache.

2. I purchased (2) 12-tb: anyone knows why i get 10.91-tb for each? why are we short?

This BS-math [“a kilobyte is defined as 1000 bytes”]was started by Maxtor (IIRC, it was 1991 and it affected the 320 MB hard drives; I had just purchased a 240 MB for $230 at the PX.The 320 MB was only $189, sitting on the shelf next to 240 MB). Before then if you had a 240 MB drive you could put roughly 220 MB of data on it.Drive manufacturers would say ‘unformatted capacity: 240 MB’ and you did NOT “lose” so much capacity. Track and sector encoding doesn’t equate to the difference between
(1024^3 – 1000^3). Imagine if you will, someone telling you that a year is defined as 10 months.

3. Is this drive smr if so i don’t want it!

No, it’s not. All Ironwolf and Itonwolf pro drives are SMR free, according to Seagate

4. Does any one know a case where 3 could fit inside?

I have 3 of these in a Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ works great!
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

J. Gay says: “I’ve been running a few of these in my FreeNAS for about a year, and when it came time to increase storage size I bought a few more without hesitation. Nice that they give detailed drive information for monitoring (temperature, load averages, etc) and are whisper quiet. Shock protection is also great, I dropped one on tile floor while I was getting it out of the box and it had zero problems passing all tests and badblocks, not a single dead sector. I’ve had a few consumer grade drives fail in my NAS over the years, but not a single one
of these has come close to breaking. Well worth the slightly higher cost if you have critical data to back up (or you just want additional peace of mind) :).

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

FriagramTop Contributor: Pets says: “This drive is designed for constant write duty without spinning down. This mainly happens in video recording systems where video is constantly dumped to disk. This comes at a cost of seek and random access times (reading multiple files from various areas at once is slow). If you are looking for backup, media storage, or network storage, look at the WD RED drives. They will perform better in those settings, and are significantly cheaper. This drive is designed for constant write duty without spinning down.

The drive is very quiet compared to many other drives. There is no loud clicking noises, or audible spin up sounds. I have some WD RED drives next to this system for network storage, and this drive is significantly quieter than those. I also have some Seagate NAS drives, but they are so loud I can’t even use them in a living space.

Anyhow, this is a great drive. It was installed in a generic low cost Network Video Recorder (Hisilicon Hi3520D) and it runs fine. Most low to middle end DVR/NVR systems use this chip family and the same software, so this should be compatible with them all. The drive has been saving 4x 1080p streams 24/7, and it has done fine so far through 8TB+ of looped writes over the past few weeks.

The drive does run quite hot in a small enclosure, and most NVR systems do not have good ventilation. To fix this, I just bolted a 140mm fan to the top of the recorder after cutting a hole. This keeps the drive running around 30-40c instead of 60-80, as well as provides cooling to the NVRs processor (which was crazy hot and didn’t even come with a heat sink). Most NVRs have a dedicated 12v connector for an optional fan, but if they don’t you can always get power from the 12v barrel connector or the 4 pin HDD connector..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Are these retail or oem? seagate won’t warranty oem drives.

I emailed them this question about the 8TB Seagate Exos 8TB Internal Hard drive, and at least they were honest. (saberPC).
I chose not to waste my money on a ‘questionable’ 5 YEAR warranty from a company that may very well not be around in 5 years, and even if they are, a company with a 10% ‘unsatisfied’ customer raises some serious red flags. Better to spend an extra 50 bucks and get a real warranty from Seagate. 5 years is a LONG time.

‘The Seagate hard drives that we are selling are OEM drives which are all brand new and sealed from the factory. The warranty is from us that we offer an industry standard 5-year warranty on all hard drives and we have been in business for over 12 years. So once the device is not working under the warranty, all you need to do is to email or call us, and provide us the serial no, and that is it.
Please let us know if you still have questions!
Best,
SabrePC’

2. This drive was made for datacenters. Can it be used in a regular pc as a separate drive besides the main drive containing the operating system?

As long as you have a modern PC.It’s typical SATA III interface. The only issue is with older PCs because you need a BIOS that can deal with GPT partitions. But really, if you have something that came out after around 2010 – 2012, the BIOS should be more modern.BIOS, being software/hardware = firmware that’s involved with the basic functionality of the hardware that’s part of the PC, which is what brings the PC up to the state of being able to load an operating system, such as Windows or Linux.

3. What is the warranty?

As other reviewers have mentioned, all Seagate drives sold on the Amazon Seagate page have no warranty of any kind. DO NOT BUY THESE DRIVES.

4. what is the rotational speed of this hard drive? I’m asking because I don’t see it listed here.

It’s 7200

Trestan says: “Added review: After using the item for about a month, there were a few things I noticed about this ‘Exos’ lineup of drives. 1) You can safely register them at Seagate to claim your warranty, for the 14tb and 16tb versions at least. That was the case for me, and I bought from SaberPC and Global Silicon. It may be different for other sellers. 2) They are a bit loud compared to the Barracuda lineup. if you are using a hard disk dock that exposes the drives for instance, you might even think there’s something wrong going on inside the drives

After using the item for about a month, there were a few things I noticed about this ‘Exos’ lineup of drives.
1) You can safely register them at Seagate to claim your warranty, for the 14tb and 16tb versions at least. That was the case for me, and I bought from SaberPC and Global Silicon. It may be different for other sellers.

2) They are a bit loud compared to the Barracuda lineup. if you are using a hard disk dock that exposes the drives for instance, you might even think there’s something wrong going on inside the drives when you copy a ton of files around a TB or so. Almost like getting a ‘kick’ once a few seconds.

3) The heat is extreme, particularly for the 16tb model, not so much for the 14tb.

Still, the prices on Amazon are definitely a no-brainer. Where I live, the 16TB Barracudas go for a bit over $700. I can stand a bit of noise and heat for the extended warranty and over 40% discount.

Original review:
Bought mine from SaberPC. My drive arrived in a paper box(not a retail box like most of the Barracuda lineup). But it was factory-sealed and much cheaper than their suggested price so I won’t complain.

The drive provides 14901GBs of free space, which sounds about right if you divide it by 1,024 three times. I’ve read in Seagate’s official forums that the Exos drives are their top-tier, enterprise grade drives, so I will be using it with a peace of mind..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Efax suffix means these drives are using smr, right?

Western Digital’s complete lack of information regarding this particular drive’s use of SMR or PMR would lead me to believe that they are still shipping drives that could use either. (They also produce them from more than one contracted facility) It is my understanding that older versions of this drive use PMR while the more recently manufactured versions will use SMR. If you call customer support to inquire, they will tell you that they are only able to give a definitive answer on whether the drive uses SMR or PMR if you provide them a serial number. This would indicate to me that they have drives with the same product number using both technologies. Also, if you review the specs for the drive on their site, there is absolutely no mention of PMR or SMR. However, if you look at some other WD manufactured drives, such as the Ultrastar DC HC520 12 TB it is clearly marked and identified as a PMR drive.

2. Wd red 8tb is smr or cmr? it is the same “efax” suffix in the model number as 6tb or 4tb, and those are smr

WD does not specify SMR versus CMR.WD has confirmed that the EFAX line has transitioned to SMR for the 2T to 6T drives. That’s only for today, and subject to change at any time.Just my opinion, but it seems unlikely to me that all EFAX drives will not transition to SMR eventually. The only thing we know for sure is that WD is super secretive on the subject and will not disclose the information until forced to do so.If CMR is important to you, your choices in the WD brand are Black or Red Pro.Personally, I’m switching my brand loyalty to Seagate for being completely transparent as to which of their drives are CMR and which are SMR.

3. What if i use the smr wd red but as raid 01 or 10? can it support at least 100mb read / write (bottleneck of 1gbps ethernet)

doubt it, currently maxing of at about 40mb write on the EFAX drive I got before this came to light. Benchmarking the drive puts it in the 15th percentile of HDD. It is incredibly slow compared to previous WD Red drives, and doesn’t remotely compare to a black drive.

4. Why only support for up to 8 bays? What would be the impact of running 12 of these in a single appliance?

No impact.
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

THANOS S. says: “I bought this one as a replacement of an EFRX model. I have read a few negative reviews and comments about the EFAX models not being the same in terms of resilience and NAS RAID functionality. This disk took about the entire day to fix the raid5 volume but had no issues. So far. One thing that surprised me is the fact that SMART reports its temperature to be about 4-5 Celsius LESS than the rest (EFRX models, seven of them). Wow. That’s super great as long as it doesn’t report any raid errors due to “slower” performance. Will keep an
eye on that disk but so far I have no complaints. I have set up the NAS to perform rapid tests on all disks and it passed. I also added a full test for this disk once every month. So far it’s 90% with no errors…. 18 days up and healthy..
