Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Does it have a 2.1 input

All four of the HDMI inputs on the LG CX 55 inch Class 4K Smart OLED TV w/ AI ThinQ® (54.6” Diag), Model # OLED55CXPUA are full spec HDMI 2.1 ports and they are all HDCP 2.2 compliant. HDMI IN 2/eARC supports HDMI eARC functionality^IFV

2. Does it have 2.1 hdmi?

Only partial 2.1 support. It does have 2.1 ports but the hardware is only designed to handle 40Gbps maximum instead of the full 48Gbps the specification allows. This is because the display panels can only display a 10-bit 4K picture at 120hz. The HDMI 2.1 spec allows for a 12-bit signal at 4K and 120hz which the panel is incapable of doing.

3. Does the optional protection plan cover burn-in?

The Geek Squad plan is NOT ridiculous, if you consider it’s the only plan you can buy anywhere that covers burn-in. And, that’s exactly where I will be buying this tv from.

4. What refresh rate can cx do at 1080p, 1440p, and 4k when connected to a pc?

The LG CX 55 inch Class 4K Smart OLED TV w/ AI ThinQ® (54.6” Diag), Model # OLED55CXPUA will support 1920 x 1080 @ 120Hz, 2560 x 1440 @ 120Hz when HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color is set to On, and 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz when connected to a PC^IFV

Updated review (10/13/2020)

Mounting was a breeze. Took about 10 minutes to screw the mount into the back of the TV. Most of that time was ensuring that I attached to the desired holes on the mount, as the mount supported attaching the TV at multiple locations. It does take 2 people to mount. I don’t care how strong you think you are. It’s not a weight issue so much as it’s a wingspan issue. The required placement of your hands, so you don’t damage the EXTREMELY thin screen, doesn’t allow for only holding the entire TV with 2 hands. I solicited the help of my visiting in-law. We picked it up, hooked the mount to the wall and presto we were done. Plugged in the power and cables and ready to watch.

Recommendation: Pay the extra money and get an AC outlet directly behind the TV. They sell power cable in-wall kits that don’t require an electrician and I’m sure those work just as well. Basically those are just cable routing outlets that allow you to use an electrical extender to bring power from the outlet behind your ground-level furniture thru the wall up to the extension “outlet”. It’s cool because it’s really just a fancy extension cord so you aren’t faced with the cost of an electrician to install a new outlet. Point is…get an extender or a new outlet. Either way you’re not going to want to see cables dangling down the wall after mounting your beautiful, expensive TV. I had to get a real outlet installed because the wall I mounted on was an outdoor perimeter wall, so the thickness between the dry wall and the concrete block left about 1.25 inches of space. My electrician had to feed the cables thru the wall until his hands were bleeding (better him than me) as the space was so small. The wall mount had to be drilled thru the drywall directly into the concrete also. Upside, that TV is never falling off the wall. I could hang 10 TVs off that mount. I jest.

Also I bought an LED strip that is stuck to the back of the TV. It plugs directly into the USB input on the back of the TV so it turns on/off with the TV. You can change the colors but I just go with a soft white and it really compliments the TV and provides an outer glow which can be seen in my attached photos.

Original review…
Everyone talks about the amazing picture quality so I won’t bother with that. Let’s just say it’s incredible.

Something that really impressed me is the thickness of the actual screen. It’s thinner than my iPhone X. The “downside” to the screen being this thin is when we lifted it I was concerned about applying too much pressure and potentially causing damage as it flexed. The instructions discuss how to hold the TV when lifting it whereas most of the pressure is actually to the bottom half of the TV so it isn’t really a problem but something to be cognizant of.

It’s easy to access all the inputs/outputs on the back. 4 of the HMDI ports are actually on the left side (facing the TV). The power cord is on the right side, although rear facing. That’s not a complaint, I just want to provide that information.

Setup couldn’t be easier. I had my cable box connected thru HDMI and my PS4 connected thru HDMI as well. Then I turned on the TV for the first time. Over the course of a few minutes the TV detected everything that was plugged in and asked a question “are these the correct components plugged in?” Aside from providing the wifi password I didn’t have to get involved in the setup at all. After everything was setup I plugged in my Bose Soundbar. I tried using the HDMI eArc plug which failed as it always has (same lack of success on my previous TV). I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to get the Bose Soundbar to work is thru the optical cable, and I don’t put the blame on LG. That is certainly a Bose shortcoming. Regardless, I plugged it in thru the optical port. You have to navigate to the “All Settings” menu thru the TV to the sound settings. There is a selection to use Optical, TV, Both, etc. When I made the correct choice it worked as expected.

The TV also comes with an over the air LG TV service. That was completely unexpected. I confused that with the cable provided by my Spectrum cable box. Once I realized what was happening I was pleasantly excited. I don’t know if I will use it, but considering the cost of cable it is something I will investigate further.

We had the Amazon Fire TV on our older TV and don’t need it anymore on this new TV. All those same services that we use, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Disney Plus and Hulu are built in. As expected an enormous number of other services are also available. That is very convenient.

In conclusion I recommend this TV purchase with zero hesitation..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Does it do hdmi 2.1

At the moment only eARC is supported for the HDMI 2.1 feature list. The best features like VRR & ALLM, 4K@120Hz won’t be possible. Maybe it has the ability and Sony will send out a firmware update to unlock them.
But what is known is Sony’s mid-level LCD, the 900H, will support VRR and ALLM. Not sure why a lesser chipset and cheaper TV is able to support this while the A8H being nearly twice the price and having the Ultimate chipset can’t.
Sony’s strategy releasing this ahead of the PS5 and it’s not able to support the new consoles best features is an odd marketing choice, especially when LG OLED has had these features for 2 model years.

2. Can this TV be wall mounted and still use the sound bar?

Hi, Crazy Mountain Rider, Yes, you can wall-mount this TV with VESA compatible 300×300 mm (SU-WL855) while connected to the soundbar. Thanks. Jay

Bailey says: “If you have a dark cinema room go with this Sony. You will not be disappointed. Picture is more natural, but darker. Otherwise, I think LG takes the lead for its 2.1 HDMIs, more modern looking, has more vibrant colors and is brighter. After a few weeks watching various content, I returned this Sony because even though it’s amazing with the OLED screen and has slightly better motion, it was too dark and reflective for my bright-ish room and went with LG CX instead.

Counted on fast shipping, but the tv arrived outside of the stated delivery timeframe. It took 8 days despite the claim of free one day Prime shipping. It was 4 days after the tv shipped before it arrived. Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Does sony x950h tv have hdmi 2.1?

Hello Laxma, Unfortunately, no. The XBR-85X950H does not have HDMI 2.1 spec. HDMI 2.1 spec for 8K signal is on the 8K XBR-85/98Z9G and 8K XBR-75/85Z8H models. Thanks! – Romeo

2. What features/specs is the 49-inch missing from the 55-inch and up?

Hi Autumn Grey,

The 49” does not have X-Wide Angle, Hands Free Voice Search or Dual position stand (which the larger screen sizes do). All X950H series shares the exact same technologies like 4K HDR, X1 Ultimate Picture Processor, X-Motion Clarity – 120HZ, Android TV w/ Google Assistant and Alexa/AirPlay/HomeKit Compatible.

Regards,
David

3. Can the hdtv output 5.1 sound through the digital out toslink connection?

This TV also has eARC and will pass through Dolby Atmos via eARC on HDMI or 7.1 L-PCM via eARC over HDMI. 5.1 is the max you can get from the good old optical toslink connection. Only way to get Atmos or 7.1 is to either split your HDMI output from all your devices, (Apple TV, XBox, Dish, blu ray) or get TV W/ eARC. You could also get AVR and plug all your devices into it, but then that would need to be able to pass through all video formats at all required resolutions, with the right color range, for everything you want right now, but you should consider the future as well.

4. Bought this tv and love it, but supposedly it requires an adapter to connect to older devices via component/rca. what adapter is required to do this?

Hi there,

We appreciate you love your new 49X950H 4K Ultra HD TV. To connect your audio/video components, you will need to have an Analog Extension Cable. Should you need more assistance or information on how to get this connecting cable, please follow the steps below for ways to contact us.

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Eric B. says: “This TV is a beautiful device, worthy of the cost. We purchased this as a replacement for our 2009 50 inch Panasonic plasma. It’s a fine successor to what was a fantastic tv for many years. Finally a tv that offers the quality of a plasma without the risk of burn in (like OLED). That is once the second one arrived two days later. The first one sent to us had clearly been run into by a forklift in the bottom left corner. Upon removal from the box the device was found shattered and completely ruined. Amazon was great about getting
a replacement to use less then 48 hours later though, so that’s something.

The Sony x950h is a relatively simple upgrade over the 2019 g model, one of the two biggest differences being in its audio quality. Now if you have a great sound system already you might be able to save a few bucks and go with last years addition. From my research the two are nearly identical in overall image quality. In my case we decided on the h precisely because we don’t have room for a decent surround sound setup. In fact I’d say it’s audio quality is equal to a good sound bar and should be more then enough for most folks.

The picture quality is great with one small draw back (I say draw back but it’s more like a trade off). The viewing angle on this TV is fantastic, much better than the 2019 model. But to achieve this and it’s rather dark blacks, they had to cut down on the number of zones for the full array LED lighting. As a result you may notice a slight bloom effect around things like credits and subtitles, especially when viewing in a very dark room. You could simply turn this feature off, but you will greatly sacrifice the darkness of your blacks as a result. I only notice it very infrequently, so it’s not a deal breaker for me.

The built in smart tv software is fine for anyone without a dedicated media device. We are only using it for YouTube at this point, everything else is viewed on an Apple TV 4K. Can’t wait for Apple to make their device fully compatible with the YouTube app, but until then, the Android Tv will suffice. Setting options are easily accessible and paired well with a cheap feeling but very capable remote.

A great alternative for OLED (no thanks, don’t need burn in problems) at a very reasonable price. Giving it 5 stars over all and very satisfied.

*edit – Apple has finally update the Apple TV 4K. We are no longer using any of the built in Android TV apps. A few months in and I have no complaints at all, the points in my original review still stand on solid ground..

You have probably heard about all the great things about OLED TV’s picture quality and the truth is that it’s all true. I am a bit of a TV fanatic, especially when it comes to video and sound quality.

A month ago I purchased a 55″ LG C9 OLED TV to replace my aging Panasonic Plasma I had in my bedroom. I use a LG C7 OLED in my living room and these two OLED’s have fantastic pictures.

When I was offered the Sony A8G to review I was very excited. I had been looking at the A9F and was very impressed with that model but passed on it for the LG C9. Then I heard that the “G” series had just come out and was sporting a newer OLED panel and a better image processor than the “F” series. So when the A8G arrived I decided to put it to the test right away.

First of all I love the A8G form factor and design. It is as thin, sleek and has all the typical ports one would expect on a TV in this price range. The base pedal is really nice, it is adjustable from almost zero clearance at the bottom to high enough that you can fit almost any sound bar underneath it. The wall mount capabilities are excellent and it seems like it would be almost picture like against the wall.

VIDEO:
The Video out of the box is outstanding. Now before I go into detail let me explain, I am splitting hairs here when I compare these TV’s. On a Still or static image you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between any of the OLED TV’s. All the panels for the last two years are very close in quality. What you are getting with this newer TV panel is just a slight increase in the image quality on a static images. The real magic comes in with the image processors and how they deal with fast moving images and the quality in up scaling of 1080P and even old 480 SD images to 4K. Also Lag time for gaming gets better with each new generation.

The A8G is second in line to the A9G and has a slightly slower image processor, but it blows the doors off of all OLEDs that are even a year older.

For testing I used my nVidia shield TV playing high bit rate Demo files (580MB for 90 seconds of video). I used my 4K UHD copy of Pacific Rim and for live TV I used a Directv C61K 4K client receiver on channel 104 and 105 for the world cup.

The ability to clean up artifacts and motion issues on the Sony was outstanding. It blew away my LG C7 and was on par with my LG C9. Black levels were just as good as the C9 and better than the C7. I think color gradients was the surprising one. I found that the Sony had slightly better color gradients than the LG C9. It’s slight but enough that I could notice in the 4K demo files. The upscaling was very good with this TV, it was able to make 1080P material look extremely good and even helped the older SD material slightly more than the LG, which was a surprise. (480P is still not great, but you cant turn garbage into perfume). Digital artifacts and other picture issues were cleaned up nicely by the Sony and overall the picture is very impressive.

Audio:
I guess most people will be using a sound bar with a TV like this but if your not it’s good to know that Sony did an excellent job with the built in sound system. This model uses two screen vibrating speakers. I was dubious but they actually managed to keep the good clean sound quality, especially in the voice range and the rear subwoofers on this TV are actually very good.

Overall I would not hesitate to recommend this TV for someone looking to get the latest and greatest OLED. If you own an OLED that is two years old and are into high quality video you will see a really nice difference in picture quality. If your just a casual TV viewer you might not. As I said this OLED technology is getting to the point of splitting hairs.

If your coming from a Plasma TV, LED TV or an OLED TV that is three years or more in age this Sony will be a huge step up in black levels and color rendering and motion handling.
One last thing, I have never experienced burn in with any of my OLEDS. You really do not need to worry about burn in unless you do something incredibly stupid like leaving a static image on the screen for ten hours..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Does this model have the Picture Off function, like the 2017 model, so that you can turn the screen off while keeping the audio on?

I am surprised at the misinformation by the seller “jay” speaking for the manufacturer!
In order to turn off the picture while still having sound, press the “ACTION MENU” button on your remote, and select “Picture Off” from the drop down.
This will turn make the screen black while still playing audio,

Touching any button on the remote restores the picture.

2. Is the refresh 120Hz (as stated in ad) or 60hz as stated in Q&A?

The fact that these companies get away with advertising 120hz, even tho half is inserted black frames is ridiculous. Say you are 60hz and then show your smoothing technique elsewhere.

3. Does the tv have rca, composite, or s video inputs?

Hi, Jason!

Yes, this unit has this input.

Regards,

Jay

4. Is delivery fast?

Prime delivery was very fast!

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. What makes the x950g better than the x900f to justify the price difference?

All 4 HDMI ports are full bandwidth at 4k@60hz unlike the 900f which only port 2&3 are full. Game input lag for 1080p gameplay has been lowered from 90ms to 18ms. Slightly better bult-in speakers.Updated remote. Updated Sony interface. Apple airplay 2. Ultimate chip keeps Sony as the best TV for upscaling content that’s not 4k to looking like it could be. It also makes the software faster than 900f. Justifying price difference. That’s for you and your wallet to decide because the $800 difference between 55”-65” seems ridiculous but if you have the money and or can wait for sale. Seems crazy to get the X900F. No matter what anyone says the 950g is better than the 900f whether by a huge margin or not.

2. What is the vesa mount pattern? Is it centered?

The wall mounts depends on the size of the TV: 55,65 inches Vesa 300x300mm; 75 inches Vesa 400×300; 85 inches Vesa 400x400mm. I decided for this wall mount > http://topreviews24.com/full-motion-wall-mount/mounting-dream-md2380/ < and I'm very happy with it!

3. Have hdmi 2.1 ?

It doesn’t, but they added some 2.1 features such as HDMI eARC support

4. Does this have non glare screen?

NO. It’s screen has some glare, but only Samsung Q90R has a true non-glare screen (price is 20% more).
X-Wide only offers better off-axis viewing, but is not an anti-glare feature.

I’m glad I finally made the leap to 4K since this upgrade is much more noticeable for color and clarity. I picked up the Sony XBR-65X950G at a local store’s warehouse on Friday and got to play with it some over the weekend, but not as much as I wanted to because I spent more time rearranging the space after the new arrival.

Colors were vibrant and even the blacks were plenty dark. Viewing angles were good for a single seat I had at around 45°, but the main seats are directly in front and great at 8’. Sitting and laying on the floor, in front of the sofa, was good as well. The location had no windows except at the other end of the L shaped room and below from the loft. Not a fan of torch mode TVs or monitors since I always run them at less than 50% brightness; this thing gets bright. Internal light glare wasn’t an issue due to the finish. The speakers are decent enough to watch regular programming and even light gaming. Yes, really. I only use the surround system when watching movies. Remote is not backlit but no worries since I use my TV provider’s or a universal remote depending on what I’m watching.

OTA broadcasts looked good even though there’s only 1080/720 and unfortunately, 480 content still. Comcast has the same resolution content although their box can be set to 4K, but some channels look noticeably better than others. The Panasonic DP-UB820 did a wonderful job at 4K media and upscales BD and even DVD very well. The 4K content from Netflix (additional $5 upgrade) and Amazon were a noticeable improvement too. There’s also some YouTube 4K+ content but nothing I’d watch on a regular basis on a TV besides sampling/showcasing. I looked through some Vudu trailers, but they weren’t offered in 4K although the movie rentals did show availability. I quickly tested an XBoX One S and 360 and the FPS and racing games I tried looked decent enough for a console and didn’t show any issues…I’m a PC gamer. I even fired up an old VHS flick and looks better than I remember.

I went with an LED over OLED because of burn-in reality…I could also buy two for the price of one. I’ve seen it in showrooms from Best Buy to boutique AV stores and believe it’s worse than previous generation technologies. I’ve owned rear projection and plasma TVs and tired of reminding others in my household about leaving games, streaming menus, content pausing and even staying on the same channels with fixed logos etc.

This is my second Sony TV and very impressed with it. I’ve been a Panasonic and Toshiba TV consumer over many years but unfortunately, they left the U.S. market. An end of an era indeed. This TV is made in Mexico and remote in China. I purchased an LG tuner/DVD player back when HDTVs didn’t have tuners in them and wasn’t overly impressed with it, so no LG for me.

I haven’t used the networked functions on this TV and not much of a fan of Google and their tech in the TV. I went through every menu and turned off everything I could, including wireless, before connecting to my wired network. I’m doing my streaming elsewhere.

If you’ve been on the 4K fence then this is the series to do it with, but you must have the content to feed it. Now back to enjoying the eye candy..
