VINE VOICE says: “This will be a long story but you need to understand why in my case I used these. I was very reserved getting this but with the sudden forming of a ice damn that was allowing leaks into my kitchen that I’ve never had before it seemed worth a try. Indiana has just recovered from a couple of multiple day below zero episodes for the last two weeks with freezing rain and snow. We went from Zero to 30’s and rain in less than 24 hours. I think that unusual temp change even for Indiana caused my problem. Installed the cables

last week in a unusual day of 55 degrees. My roof is 2 years old and it was very tough to not rip the shingle tabs to install the clips. A older roof or a colder day would be very challenging. The cable was manageable but as others have said uncoil the whole roll as installing it will lay flat on the roof better. The instructions are good and helpful in figuring how high to make the runs and distance apart. The Clips are like RAZORS! wear gloves or you will regret it. With the clips installed its easy to run the cable . It took about 4 hours total but I was very anal in being careful with the shingles and measuring the clip distance. For the test Indiana didn’t wait long Freezing rain, 4 inches or snow with below zero temps for a few days again set up the perfect storm again. When it warmed above 20 degrees I plugged them in. 12 hours later the pictures tell the story . They worked as advertised melting the ice and snow to the shingle. The roof has now completely melted and no problems inside. A few tips : This cable uses a lot of power about 1000 watts in this 200 foot cable. It will be costly to use so use it only when needed. It will not melt ice or snow under 20 degrees or so. Use at least a 14ga extension cord if you have to use one. A 16ga was warm after a few hours. My roof was 66 foot long and this 200 foot kit was only a foot short. You also need the gutter cable because without that you will have a ice filled gutter that can also do damage. In my pictures they are not installed yet. I had used ice melt in the gutter. I have ran a separate cable for my gutter. Most contractors don’t like these because they don’t fix the cause but do some research and in my case it seems worth the investment..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I’m looking at using something like this for a chicken watering system. Could everything, minus the plug head, be completely submerged in a pipe?

I am curious if you ever tried this for you chicken watering system. I am looking to do the same thing, wondering if it worked out?

2. Can it be cut to length? I only need it to be about 4 foot long.

No I can not be cut you have to buy the length of cord that you need that is the closest size to what u need and typically whatever is left over I usually coil up and leave it along side of the foundation of the house if you really only need 4 feet might I suggest heat tape instead it does the same thing and you can get it cut to the exact size you need it just keep in mind that an electrician has to wire it in and u have to remove 1 corse of shingle to install it under the shingles on the roof..hope this helps and have a good holiday cheers:-)

3. Curious to know if I put this in my walkway..would it melt snow??? I HAte shoveling. 🙂

Heat cable is not meant to melt snow. It’s meant to create space near the cable for melt water to flow to prevent ice buildup/damming.

4. Is the on/off manual? Can it operate in any low temp?

off you just unplug it and yes will work any temp.

8. Easy Heat ADKS-150 30-Foot Roof Snow De-Icing Kit

Product Description Roof/gutter kit 30′ From the Manufacturer It’s not those big icicles that do the real damage, it’s the ice you don’t see that backs up in gutters and under shingles. When the ice melts it can really do a number on repair costs. Easy Heat ADKS roof de-icing cable prevents this water and ice damage by providing a clear path for melting water to flow off the roof.

The versatile design adapts to most roof and gutter configurations. This product is intended for the sole use of preventing ice dams from forming on inclined roofs with tab shingles, in gutters and downspouts. This roof de-icing cable is not intended for use as a snow melting system to clear roof of ice and snow. This system can be installed with confidence that it will operate for years without requiring service.

All components are made of the highest quality material and are tested during critical points in the manufacturing process.

Easy Heat ADKS-150 30-Foot Roof Snow De-Icing Kit

  • Snow de-icing cable prevents winter damage to roof, gutters, and downspouts
  • Provides uninterrupted path for melting water to flow off roof
  • Suitable for most roof and gutter configurations; available in several lengths
  • Easy to install; no maintenance required
  • Includes 6 clips and 2 mounting screws
Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Does it come with installation clips or are they seperate

Each cable comes with a predetermined number of bags containing cable spacers and shingle clips, and each “bag” contains 16 cable spacers, and 19 shingle clips. The 80′ kit comes with 3 bags, the 100′ comes with 4 bags, and the 160′ comes with 5 bags (those are the only cable lengths I’ve used so far). Detailed installation info can be found by going to;www.emersonindustrial.com, and following the EASYHEAT brand links, howeverFor basic installations with cable on the roof (zig-zags) AND in the gutters/downspouts, you’ll need;- 2 shingle clips for every 15″ of roof edge to be treated that DOES NOT have a gutter,- 2 shingle clips AND 2 cable spacers for every 15″ of roof edge that DOES have a gutter- 2 cable spacers for each foot of downspout (spacer every 6″). – Add at least 2 more clips and spacers for every roof corner you’ll have to go around with the cable. For basic gutter and downspout ONLY installations (no roof zig-zags) 2 strands of cable are required for every foot of gutter and downspout. For gutter/downspout ONLY installations you’ll likely use VERY FEW of the supplied shingle clips, but you’ll need;- 1 cable spacer for every 12″ of gutter- 2 cable spacers for every 12″ of downspout (spacer every 6″)- Be sure to add at least 2 more cable spacers for every gutter/roof corner you’ll have to run the cable around. If you’re doing a gutter/downspout ONLY install (2-strands of cable for every 12″ of gutter and downspout, the 2 strands must be separated by spacers every 6″-12″) you may run out of cable spacers very quickly, and wind up with bunches of shingle clips you won’t need. If you’re going to run low on cable spacers, call EASYHEAT at 1-800-562-6587, and they’ll send you more

2. How close can the cable be to itself to be safe with no risk of melting the cable?

The instructions said as long as it’s not touching itself, it’s fine. Also try not to lay it directly against metal because it’s energy will dissipate to the metal surface and not be used to melt what’s around it. Try to suspend it within the gutter with the clips

3. how long should i order

Depends on how big/ long of an area do you want to thaw?

4. Can I put this on Suntuf corrugated polycarbonate panels that currently serving as a roof over a pergola?

yes

Mark says: “Used these to deice gutters and downspouts this winter and the result is phenomenal! No more frozen downspouts and even melts the snow in and around the gutters. I did not run these like recommended along the roof in a up and down pattern, I just put them in the gutters and ran into the downspouts to the outlets. They are permanently installed and all I need to do is plug them in when it snows. Very happy.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. can it be used on metal roof? Attachment system?

Hi Joyce, I love your last name! I think that it can be used on a metal roof. However, why don’t you call the manufacturers helpline at 800-562-6587. They are very helpful. Pat Vitone

2. How long is the power cord?

not super long, I have a heavy duty extension cord to my outdoor outlet

3. Maybe I don’t understand the description completely, it needs water to turn on, so it wouldn’t turn on during really cold weather?

Right, it needs to sense both moisture and temp to turn on. You don’t need it on if it’s zero degrees but your roof is clear.

4. so it says automatic, does it go on only when it is cold? or does it drkeep heater on all winter?

It requires 2 conditions to turn on. 1) probe in gutter has to be wet and 2) temperature between freezing and 40 degrees F. Otherwise it remains off (and does not keep heater on all winter).
