Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. We bought this and still have ice dam. Contractor said the mat doesn’t direct the water like the cable does. How does the mat address the water?

Depends on the placement of the matting. Remember these two things; Water flows downhill and if you have snow on your roof and it melts, you need to give a path in which to flow. Typical application of heat cable is from the lower roof edge, up the roof just past the inside of the home’s exterior wall (average home may be three feet up from the roof edge). The cable will melt the snow and ice and then flow it down to the roof edge. If you just laid this mat on the roof edge, you will be fine on just the width of the matting and an ice dam may still for above that, if the matting does not go far enough up the roof; that’s where cable is the best and will give the melt a path to flow. Keeping warm air out of an attic and keeping it cold is the best way to prevent ice dams and minimize the need for cable or matting.

2. Can you connect multiple mats together? I need several of these but wouldn’t have enough outlets if it is 1 to 1.

Hi Travis,

These mats have a 5′ ft. male lead to an outlet. To connect multiples of these mats together we would have to custom make these heaters for you, which we CAN since we are the manufacturer of these products. Also, if you would like to connect several of these, we would recommend having these mats in 220 voltage, which can carry more amperage. For custom orders, you have to contact us direct.

Thank you,
RHS Support Team

3. Can you use these on scuppers to keep them from forming ice blocks?

Hi Delores,

Yes, this heat mat could be used on scuppers, all of our heat mats are completely sealed and waterproof.

Thank you for your question
RHS Support Team

4. Can this be used on top of a box truck to melt ice?

Hello Customer,

Yes, you can use this system on top of a box truck to prevent ice formation or ice dams. If you turn it on before the snow begins, it will melt up to 2″ inches an hour. Although, this system use is not intented to melt existing ice dams or existing ice.

Thank you

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

RC says: “This product has solved a difficult dormer drip/valley convergence spot that has been causing me winter/spring ceiling leaks for the past five years due to ice dam buildup (an apparently long standing issue for the previous owners as well, evidenced by attempted repairs). Two experienced builders could not solve the issue with additional flashing/caulking/changing the roofline and this product is much less expensive than those efforts or a metal roof. I don’t normally write reviews but made the exception in this case as the product works so well I ordered a second one for another problem spot. Thanks, Kevin and team!
Absolutely brilliant product, fast shipping, simple/safe to use, 5 year guarantee = happy customer..

6. Heat Cable for Pipe Freeze Protection, 60 feet, with Built-in Thermostat

Size:60 Feet THIS CABLE WILL NOT WORK unless it is in a cold environment. We’ve received a couple bad reviews because people ‘tested’ the cable in their warm living room. Eye roll. Please don’t be that guy. The built-in thermostat will NOT TURN THE CABLE ON unless it is in a cold environment. Now for the good news, this kit includes 16 feet of high temperature glass cloth tape for installing your cable.

Pipe Freeze Pro is a commercial-grade, self-regulating heat cable which provides years of reliable freeze protection for pipes of all varieties, including copper, steel, PVC, ABS, PEX and more (pipe diameters up to 2”). It may also be used in drains and culverts through the winter months to promote drainage. Don’t buy from companies without a human available by phone. Heat cable is technical stuff and it’s great to have solid advice on how to install it.

We are the only heat cable seller on Amazon who is a simple phone call away. Phone: 877-387-4218. Eat that off shore competitors! Pipe Freeze Pro is jacketed with a commercial-grade fluoropolymer and comes standard with a flame-retardant thermoplastic interior jacket. Our 16 gauge heating wires are 200% thicker than the conductors found in cheap, constant wattage cables like EasyHeat and Frost King. Thicker conductors mean greater heating efficiency, more melting power and long term cable integrity.

Pipe Freeze Pro is self-regulating, meaning it ‘asks’ for more energy as it gets colder outside and less energy when it’s warmer. The entire length of our cable is temperature sensitive such that colder areas demand more power than warmer areas. Smart stuff. The stated cable length DOES NOT include an additional 24” unheated cold lead. For example, a 6 foot cable is 6 feet plus 2 feet of unheated cord.

Installation is simple. Run Pipe Freeze Pro along the pipe, secure with fiberglass cloth tape (included) every 12 inches and wrap with standard pipe insulation. Read the manual for full instructions, of course.

  • TAPE INCLUDED: 16 feet of high-temperature glass cloth tape is included with this cable.
  • HEAVY DUTY: Integrated thermostat turns cable on at 37 degrees, off at 50 degrees, greatly reducing energy waste. Cable is 8mm wide and includes a 24” unheated cord (add to stated cable length). Cable has commercial-grade outer jacket for long life and carries a FIVE YEAR WARRANTY, which is double the warranty of similar cables on Amazon. Will not short or burn out if cable is overlapped.
  • USES: Use on the inside or outside of all types of water carrying pipe including copper, steel, PVC, ABS, PEX, concrete and more; can be exposed directly to water and is rated for soil contact.
Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. On the 80′, what kind of amp draw does it have and what breaker amp should it be on? Or should it have a dedicated breaker line?

The installation manual on the manufacturer’s website gives power specs. At 50° F, the power rating is 3 Watts/ft. so for 80′ your current draw would be 240 Watts/120 volts = 2 amps. The current draw increases as temperature decreases. From a graph of wattage/temp in the installation manual, at 32° F, 80′ would draw 3.2 amps and it looks like the current is limited at this level for all temps below 32°. A 15 amp circuit that isn’t already heavily loaded could handle this but probably best to call the manufacturer to describe your application and get their advice. Also, they recommend that this is plugged into a GFCI protected circuit.

2. How many watts is this?

Good morning. This cable operates at 3 W per foot at 50°F.

3. I ordered this to run up the the hot water pipe and then down the cold water pipe. How do I treat the area where it doesn’t touch any pipe?

I would run through an empty 1inch plastic pipe where it is not touching.

4. can you use with an extension cord? The 5 foot will not reach my outlet

Yes, as long as it is at least 12 gauge (thickness).
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

d.a. says: “I did a lot of researching of heat tracer cables and of the products from different companies that produce these, prior to buying from Radiant Solutions. One factor that influenced my decision is that I was able to call and talk to someone from the company to answer some technical questions I had prior to buying. This made a huge difference. This gave me more trust in the product. Heat tracer cable is not an easy product to quickly test and describe its efficacy — because you have to wait for super-cold outdoor conditions and see if it works after an
entire winter has gone buy — so I can’t attest to how well it will work in my particular application until next spring. But… I DID lay it all out, and plug it in leaving for an hour at 40 degree temperature (Fahrenheit) ambient conditions and I could feel the level of warmth generated by the cable. I wanted to make sure I could feel warmth, but also that it didn’t get too hot either (this can be a concern because if small stretches of the cable are exposed to air [instead of being firmly affixed to piping], a concern is over-heating and damage to the cable or insulation.) Intuitively, the temp of the cable felt right (neither to hot nor not warm enough). So I then installed it to 24 feet of PVC exposed drain pipe running underneath a cabin — in the crawl space on the way to the septic system — and the cabin is NY where winter can bring bitter cold temps for many weeks of the winter. Of course, there are mild stretches of weather too, and so that’s when you count on the self-regulating current to do its job properly. The cable also strikes me as very durably constructed and well-made. It is a bit thicker than most competitors’ cables. Radiant Solutions is a U.S. company in MN and this review is completely independent (i.e., I don’t work with them… just a one-time customer, so far)..

8. S5S Roof Clamp For Standing Metal Roof 5 Pack

S5! makes a variety of clamps for use on metal roofs. Installation involves tightening the included ‘bullet-nosed’ set screws onto the standing seam for a firm grip. The S5S sold here is designed to affix on standing seam metal roofs with a seam no wider than .540”. Other clamps are available. Consult your metal roof manufacturer to find out what clamps are best for your application. The S5-SR is the only clip in the world designed specifically for use with the S5 in heat cable and heat tape applications on standing seam metal roofs. The S5S manufacturer, Metal Roof Innovations, warrants that all S-5! products to be free from defects in material and workmanship on the date of sale by an authorized MRIL distributor to the original purchaser. As purchaser’s sole remedy for breach of this warranty, MRIL will, for a period of twenty-five (25) years after the date of sale, repair or replace any part of the S-5! manufactured product which is defective.

This warranty applies only when the S-5! product is properly installed, used and maintained.

  • USES: Use to attach a variety of things to standing seam metal roofs, including heat cable and heat tape

  • EASY INSTALLATION: Installation takes minutes, just set the S5S clip down on the standing seam, tighten set screws and you are done.
  • MADE IN THE USA: The S5 clamp is proudly made by American hands and carries a 25 year warranty.
Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. How much weight can one of these support in a vertical orientation? I want to use these to mount a sign to the front of a store.

I have never used these in a vertical application. I have found the S-5 company to be very helpful you can contact them at their web site s-5.com

2. I have tried to set these on my standing seam. The set screws when snugged down simply slide off the top of the seam. Help?

You need to crank the set screws down very tightly. You should expect them to dimple or dent the standing seam. You may want to visit the manufacturers website for further details.

10. Easy Heat ADKS-1000 200-Foot Roof Snow De-Icing Kit,Brown/A

Size:200-Foot Product Description Easy Heat ADKS-1000 200-Foot roof snow de-icing kit From the Manufacturer It’s not those big icicles that do the real damage, it’s the ice you don’t see that backs up in gutters and under shingles. When the ice melts it can really do a number on repair costs. Easy Heat ADKS roof de-icing cable prevents this water and ice damage by providing a clear path for melting water to flow off the roof.

The versatile design adapts to most roof and gutter configurations. This product is intended for the sole use of preventing ice dams from forming on inclined roofs with tab shingles, in gutters and downspouts. This roof de-icing cable is not intended for use as a snow melting system to clear roof of ice and snow. This system can be installed with confidence that it will operate for years without requiring service.

All components are made of the highest quality material and are tested during critical points in the manufacturing process.

Easy Heat ADKS-1000 200-Foot Roof Snow De-Icing Kit,Brown/A

  • Snow de-icing cable prevents winter damage to roof, gutters, and downspouts
  • Provides uninterrupted path for melting water to flow off roof
  • Suitable for most roof and gutter configurations; available in several lengths
  • Easy to install; no maintenance required. Includes 6 packages of clips
  • Fixed resistance, pre-terminated. For residential applications
Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. If I install this cable with loop back up in the downspout how do I prevent cables touching each other?

It’s nearly impossible to keep them from touching due to the cable being packaged in a coil causing it to twist and touch and also because of bends in the downspouts. I install a lot of these and they always twist and touch. You can install 1 wire spacer per 12-18 inches to (while doubling the cable) but you would have to purchase more wires and clips.Using a thermostat will keep them from getting hot enough to matter. They wear out faster when not using a thermostat because they run longer and at higher temperatures.

2. how much current does it draw?

I believe that it draws five watts per foot. So my 100 foot cable draws 500 watts, more if it were longer.

3. Hello and thank you for your time. on a 120′ package, how many clips would be included with this length?

On the 200′ length there were way more clips than were needed.Keep in mind that you don’t need clips for the length of the cable that’s running through the gutter and the downspouts. Then if you’re clipping it every 18″ at the turns, you’re going to run out of cable long before you run out of clips. You should have no need to buy extras.

4. could you use this on a handicap ramp?

You could if you installed it beneath the ramp, in other words, on the backside of the ramp. Just keep the cable protected and definitely use a thermostat. If it is a wood ramp it may not heat up very well so you would need to use more cable. The tricky part would be getting it to stay attached to the ramp.
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Amazon Customer says: “I purchased an additional one of these for the rear of my house. I had one cable each in both the front and rear gutters to prevent ice from building up, and they worked. However, the last winter in New England dumped so much snow that I decided to install the cables on the roof as well, to prevent any ice from building up there. Installation was easy. I have about a 31 foot/10 meter roofline, with an overhang of about 9 inches/25 cm. I clipped the cable three shingles up from the edge of the roof as the instructions say.
I purchased an additional one of these for the rear of my house.

Some tips on the installation:

1) I would wait until at least midmorning when the sun has been shining on the roof for an hour or two before you install this. I realize that it is hotter and less comfortable to work in, but if you give the shingles time to heat up they are more pliable and easier to work with. That way they don’t tear when you are putting the clips on.
2) While you are waiting for the roof to heat up, spread the cable on the ground in direct sunlight. This will help to alleviate some of the natural coil of the cable.
3) When you are putting the cable through the downspout, it helps to tie a small stone to the end of the cable to give it some weight. That way it goes through the downspout easily. Eventually the weight of the cable will pull it through the downspout, but initially I had to use a weight.
4) Remove the warning label on the end of the cable that says ‘Do Not Remove’. This label has nothing useful on it that a normal person shouldn’t already know, and it gets caught up when feeding it through the downspout.

That’s it, it was pretty easy to install. My roofline is 31 ft/10 meters long, and it took about 2 hours to install the cable along the roof. That includes having to reposition the ladder several times since my roof is fairly high. I probably should have gone 4 shingles up instead of 3, but I think it will still work fine, based on how well the one in the gutter worked last year..

VINE VOICE says: “This will be a long story but you need to understand why in my case I used these. I was very reserved getting this but with the sudden forming of a ice damn that was allowing leaks into my kitchen that I’ve never had before it seemed worth a try. Indiana has just recovered from a couple of multiple day below zero episodes for the last two weeks with freezing rain and snow. We went from Zero to 30’s and rain in less than 24 hours. I think that unusual temp change even for Indiana caused my problem. Installed the cables

last week in a unusual day of 55 degrees. My roof is 2 years old and it was very tough to not rip the shingle tabs to install the clips. A older roof or a colder day would be very challenging. The cable was manageable but as others have said uncoil the whole roll as installing it will lay flat on the roof better. The instructions are good and helpful in figuring how high to make the runs and distance apart. The Clips are like RAZORS! wear gloves or you will regret it. With the clips installed its easy to run the cable . It took about 4 hours total but I was very anal in being careful with the shingles and measuring the clip distance. For the test Indiana didn’t wait long Freezing rain, 4 inches or snow with below zero temps for a few days again set up the perfect storm again. When it warmed above 20 degrees I plugged them in. 12 hours later the pictures tell the story . They worked as advertised melting the ice and snow to the shingle. The roof has now completely melted and no problems inside. A few tips : This cable uses a lot of power about 1000 watts in this 200 foot cable. It will be costly to use so use it only when needed. It will not melt ice or snow under 20 degrees or so. Use at least a 14ga extension cord if you have to use one. A 16ga was warm after a few hours. My roof was 66 foot long and this 200 foot kit was only a foot short. You also need the gutter cable because without that you will have a ice filled gutter that can also do damage. In my pictures they are not installed yet. I had used ice melt in the gutter. I have ran a separate cable for my gutter. Most contractors don’t like these because they don’t fix the cause but do some research and in my case it seems worth the investment..
