This model, the NS-ZCC10/NS-ZCC18, is the only one I’ve found labeled “Neuro Fuzzy” and is made in Japan, while the comparable Micom Fuzzy Logic NS-TSC10/NS-TSC18 is made in China. Two differences are that on the ZCC there are cool touch handles to pull out the pot and the steam vent is easier to clean. I have read in another answer related to the NS-ZCC10 5.5 cup model that the Neuro Fuzzy models have 2 extra sensors to also check room and lid temperatures, while the cheaper TSC units just have a sensor on the center post the pot sits on. As much as I have wanted to believe that my wife was over finicky about rice (typical male?), I am not too proud to admit when I am wrong. I was so wrong – the rice that this appliance cooks is truly phenomenal! Whereas the rice in the previous cooker had soft and hard spots – some rice overcooked and some undercooked – the rice from this one is uniformly consistent. Each grain comes out glossy and chewy, with just the right amount of stickiness.

If you want to make any popular Japanese dishes, from the lowly onigiri (rice balls), to sushi – everything turns out more delicious with rice from this cooker. I truly don’t understand how there can be such an immediate, explicit difference in the quality of the cooked rice. 1. Can it cook quinoa?

I have the 8-cup one and the brown rice setting cooks quinoa perfectly!You have to soak it first (minimum 6 hours) but it comes out fully cooked, light and fluffy!I just purchased the larger 20-cup cooker (the 8-cup doesn’t hold enough veggies for me) and am sure the brown rice setting on the larger cooker will make quinoa perfectly as well.

2. Is the lid removable ?

You do not want the lid to be removable because that would require an extra (third) hand for operating the devise; and a clean and safe place to set down a removed lid. It is sufficient for the pot alone (and steamer tray) to be removable.

3. Does this rice cooker have a chime/bell to let you know when its done cooking? also does it have an off switch? The current one i have has to be unplugged when not in use.

Hi Judy – Yes this does have a beeper. When the rice is done it beeps on and off for about 5-6 seconds and automatically switches to keep warm. Once you’re done you can press the power button and it toggles off so no need to unplug.

I’m a simple guy who is terrible at cooking rice and has to feed a family of 6 regularly (not including the occasional guest that pops in unexpectedly). This rice cooker is awesome and I question why I waited so long to buy one. Sure, you could get a better one by dropping a couple hundred bucks on a fancy model but for what this does, it does it well. It takes about 35 minutes to cook rice for that many people. Yes, you can cook it faster by doing it the old fashioned way, but I find it very convenient to put the rice on first and just forget about it while I’m cooking the rest of the food. It makes juggling the stove much easier and frees up a burner slot so I could cook something else instead of micro-managing rice. The cup provided with the rice cooker is 3/4 the size of a regular cup of rice but even still one cup per person is more than enough.

Put your rice in in and then fill the conveniently marked bowel with water up to the number of cups you used. For example, place 6 cups of rice and then fill with water up to the “6” marked line on the inside of the bowel. Easy-peasy. You DO have to rinse your rice off before you start the cooker to get rid of extra starch but this process only takes a minute or less and you don’t need special tools or anything. I just put in the rice, add a bit of water, swirl it around, carefully drain the water out (the water will turn milky white), and literally rinse and repeat until the water is more or less clear upon draining. The rice comes out fluffy and great with nothing burned on the bottom of the pot.

I’ve also cooked other things in the rice cooker as well like a beef stew and chili. Each time I cut up the meat, tossed it in, chopped up veggies, added water and spices, closed the lid and hit the “slow cooker” option. It says it will take 7 hours but a pot roast (cut into 3-5 inch cubes) only took about 4 hours to cook and the meat was just falling apart. SO GOOOOD!

The instructions are simple and whenever you use this rice cooker please use the cup provided for easy measuring. Other than that it was worked great, cleans super easy, easy to operate, and does what it’s supposed to do. You won’t be disappointed. Hope this review helps! Not to be confused with Germinated Brown Rice: Germinated brown rice is a type of brown rice that has been processed. It is a type of rice that must be purchased. The process gives it a softer texture and improved taste. It also contains increased values of GABA. Germinated brown rice, sometimes also called sprouted brown rice, may be cooked using the “Softer” menu in most Zojirushi rice cookers.

About AI Fuzzy Logic Technology The AI (Artificial Intelligence) allows the rice cooker to “learn” from past cooking experiences and adjust the cooking “flow” to cook ideal rice. NP-NVC18 cooks rice to the same consistency in summer or winter, when water and room temperatures may be drastically different. Even after years of use, the rice cooker can cook rice to the same consistency as when the unit was new. With AI technology, the rice cooker remembers the capacity you cook most often, and selects the ideal cooking “flow” from the very first stage of the cooking process.

Basically, the microchip does all the thinking for you to adjust cooking times and temperatures, sets the precise amount of pre-soaking time of the raw grains, and the time for the final “wait” period during steaming. Conventional rice cookers simply turn on and off in reaction to temperature. Fuzzy Logic Technology fine tunes this adjustment to adapt to various rice types, such as white, brown, sweet or porridge, which all have different cooking requirements.

This model has separate thermometers that monitor the room temperature, the temperature inside the unit, and the temperature of the inner cooking pan to collect data to aid in the cooking and keep warm process. What is Induction Heating (IH) Induction Heating took rice cooking to another level by literally introducing another dimension to the heating process. Where the heating element would normally be located at the bottom of the cooker, IH transforms the entire inner cooking pan into a heat conductor, allowing for higher, more precise and more uniform cooking temperatures.

IH Pressure System Pressure cooking is a method of cooking in a sealed vessel that does not permit air or liquids to escape below a preset pressure resulting in even higher temperatures. Cooking rice with pressure is a better way to turn beta starch into alpha starch, which makes the rice softer and easier to digest. (The starch in grains is beta starch. Raw rice is hard because beta-starch is rigid.

Beta-starch resists digestion by any enzyme, to protect the seed from germinating when conditions are unfavorable. When rice is cooked, the starch loses its rigidity, and turns into a soft pasty alpha-starch.) This change makes the rice softer and easier to digest, and even fluffier to the taste. Rice cooked with pressure has also been found to stay soft for longer periods of time when compared to regular cooked rice.

How it works A specially designed lid keeps the cooker airtight and sealed, which prevents the steam from escaping. As pressure builds inside while the rice cooks, the boiling point of the water increases beyond the normal 212 degrees F. Once the water is allowed to boil, it cannot be heated further; but inside a sealed environment under pressure, higher temperatures can be reached, which penetrates everything in the cooker from the surface of the food to its center.

The unit automatically selects from three pressure levels according to the menu selected. Three pressure settings are available to steam the rice to varying degrees of firmness; lower pressure and temperature for firmer rice, and higher pressure and heat for softer rice. Pressure Safety Zojirushi has multiple safety features for a rice cooking experience that is as safe as possible. Pressure Control Valve (with Pressure Release Ball) Controls the pressure level during cooking Safety Valve: Releases excessive pressure in case the pressure control valve becomes clogged or malfunctions Pressure Indicator on the control panel turns on when pressure is applied

during cooking, and locks the lid Inner Lid Filter: Minimizes small particles from becoming stuck inside the Pressure Control Valve, Safety Valve or Steam Vent Set Whistle: A whistling noise warns that the Pressure Control Valve or Safety Valve is clogged and needs to be cleaned Platinum Infused Nonstick Inner Cooking Pan The nonstick coating on the inner cooking pan is infused with platinum particles. Through research, we discovered that platinum alkalizes water.

Alkaline water breaks down the protein on the surface of the rice grain, and water is able to penetrate the rice grain more easily. Enhanced gelatinization brings out the sweetness of rice ultimately making better tasting rice. The platinum particles are burnt onto ceramic particles, which are mixed into the nonstick coating. The water is alkalized when poured into the inner cooking pan and comes into contact with the platinum particles.

Umami Setting The Umami setting soaks the rice before cooking longer than the regular white setting. During this extended soaking time, the sugar contained within the rice is slowly released out into the water. Once the rice cooker begins to cook the rice, the sugar that was released into the water reattaches itself onto the surface of the rice, making the cooked rice taste sweeter. The Umami setting also extends the steaming time at the end of the cooking cycle.

Steam-Reduce Setting The Steam-Reduce setting reduces steam to 50% of the Regular Setting. The Rinse-Free setting can be used together with Steam-Reduce, but it is a separate course from other courses, and cannot be combined (e.g., you cannot cook choose Steam-Reduce when cooking sweet or mixed rice). The rice texture may be slightly harder than Regular. Scorched Setting The Scorched setting lightly toasts the bottom of the rice for a crispy texture.

This is also a separate setting, and cannot be combined with other settings. It is recommended that the rice be consumed immediately. Automatic Keep Warm Extended Keep Warm keeps cooked rice warm at a lower temperature than Regular Keep Warm to minimize drying and yellowing of rice. It is ideal to switch to Extended Keep Warm when keeping rice warm for a longer period of time. The rice cooker will switch to Regular Keep Warm automatically for 24 hours after cooking completion.

The reheat function will raise the temperature of the rice closer to immediately after cooking. Reheat Function Reheating will take about 5-8 minutes. It can be used to reheat rice kept warm under Regular or Extended Keep Warm, to bring the temperature closer to immediately after cooking. Keep Warm Monitor The lid sensor detects how many times the lid has been opened and for how long, and calculates the amount of rice left inside the inner cooking pan.

The rice cooker calculates how much heat is needed to keep the rice at the ideal keep warm temperature. The keep warm monitor alerts you by beeping four times, 10, 40 or 70 minutes after cooking completes if the lid has not been opened, to encourage you to fluff the rice to release excessive moisture. The rice cooker will also beep four times if the lid is left open for over 5 minutes to remind you to close the lid.

If unclosed, the rice cooker will beep every 3 minutes thereafter for up to 3 times. Both beeps will not sound if the rice cooker is set to “Silent” mode. 1. Is it worth spending the extra money on this unit for the pressure cooker feature?

NO!!! I hope I can help future rice cooker customers by sharing my experience. I recently bought the top of the line NP-NVC10, which I loved but it broke in less than two weeks:( Luckily, I got it from Amazon, so I returned it for a full refund to the seller. Yesterday, on craigslist, I saw and bought this model, NS-YAC18 (in pristine condition, the lady that sold it to me said it was two months old but she had lost the receipt). Anyway, I got it for $100 so I decided to take the risk. Being able to cook/eat brown GABA rice made in both, NP-NVC10 ($400) and this in NS-YAC18 ($100 from craigslist, or $200, if you buy it on Amazon) I can tell you that the brown GABA rice tastes to me EXACTLY THE SAME! I am not saying that there is no difference between the brown GABA these two models cook, just that I can’t taste it! So, if you are trying to decide between a rice maker that costs $200 versus one that costs $400, I’d say go for the cheaper NS-YAC18. Also, the NP-NVC10 did not have the slow cooker mode and you can’t make oatmeal in it. So, my final say is that the NS-YAC18 is a better rice maker because: 1. There’s no difference it the taste of the brown GABA rice (at least to me), 2. It costs 50% less, and 3. Can cook oatmeal, 4. Has a slow cooker mode! Yes, the NP-NVC10 is a little bit prettier, but not $200 prettier, and again only cooks rice – no oatmeal, no stews, no slow cooker. I hope this helps someone trying to decide.

2. Does the pressure cooker model cook white rice faster or what is the cooking time for white rice?

The cooking time for white rice under the ‘umami’ setting is 74 mins.The regular setting is something like 55 minand the ‘quick’ setting is somewhere in the 30’s.Some of my friends swear by the ‘quick’ setting using a little extra water, but I’m the ‘slow food’ type of person and plan the time for the long cook times.These cook times are pretty much the same with the non-pressure versions in my experience.

The only iffy thing about this cooker is that it’s not made for long grain rice. Which kinda stinks. But you can still get great rice with it, it just took some trial and error. The directions, which are very well written and translated, recommend a method that resulted in nasty mush. what I did was take the rice, add water to the same cup line as if I were making short grain rice, and select the “harder” setting. Rice came out perfect.

This is the small version. It cooks at most 1 cup of rice. It has no steamer insert unless I threw it out with the box. The full size version which I also own came with a aluminum steamer insert. Just a simple pierced rack that sits about 1/2 inch above bottom.

lots of steam does come out of the steam hole and it is supposed to do that.It does make a mess so we drape a thin tea towel – not folded over – across the top of the steamer and over the hole.While the towel does get damp, the mess is contained.The thinnest of the towel still allows for the steam to escape while keeping the surroundings relatively dry.Hope that helps.

3. Has anyone had a problem with the cooked rice getting dry after just a couple hours on “Keep Warm”? And if so, how did you deal with this problem?

The higher end rice cookers will keep rice warm for a long time. I have used many rice cookers over my lifetime, including those that did not come with this feature. My mother always let the rice sit a few minutes, then mixed the rice, then unplugged the cooker, so the rice wouldn’t burn or dry out.

The warming feature on these kinds of pots seems,mainly to keep the rice warm just after it finishes, but you still haven’t finished cooking the rest of the meal.

Yes, one cup of rice is fine. We might be able to cook only half of a cup but honestly I never tried it my self. The other answers are pretty much accurate. We can cook up to 6 cups and the quality is great, especially for the price. Whenever it’s done cooking, make sure you either keep using the “keep warm” feature or just stir the rice up at the beginning so it wont’ stick to the bottom and surrounding area of the cooking container. About 16-18 minutes for 3 cups but 3 cups is a lot for this little cooker, and it sometimes has a little liquid come out. Rice comes out pretty good. I now just limit this to 2 cups uncooked rice.

Buy regular rice. It’s cheaper per finished volume, and has a better texture! I make jasmine, brown and white basmati, brown and white, Japanese medium grain rice, and Japanese sweet sticky rice in this, and they all turn out great.

Update 12/23/16: so still very much in love with this little rice cooker! I think this has been the best, bar none, appliance I have purchased in a while. This little wonder just cooks it’s little heart out! It makes perfect rise every time. Again, the real key is to rinse the rice.

Wanting to broaden my horizon and start eating healthier brown rice, and after exploring reviews of various rice cookers, I elected to purchase this Oster Titanium Infused 6-cup rice cooker/steamer.

The rice cooker/steamer arrives well-packaged in a small box. It is about the size I expected but is much lighter than I thought it would be. There is not much to it. The black pot with the heating element in it, the gray rice pot, a shallow aluminum steamer basket, and a glass lid. A plastic cup for measuring rice and a plastic paddle spoon are also included. There is a small booklet of instructions, but no rice recipes are included.

The rice cooker is pretty basic in operation. It turns on to warming mode when you plug it in, and you start cooking rice by pushing down on the rocker switch in front. The rice cooker automatically switches to warming mode when cooking is complete in about 30 minutes. You have to unplug the unit to turn it off (there is no off switch). The rice cooker works with or without the steaming basket in place. To steam food you have to estimate how long it will need to steam (the instructions provide rough guidelines on the time needed for different foods) and put the steam basket in place about that length of time prior to when the cooker is estimated to shut off. So, for example, if you want to steam some broccoli for 12 minutes you would put the steam basket on the cooker about 18 minutes into its cycle for cooking rice. The instructions tell you not to use metal utensils with the titanium infused rice pot, so I found it odd that the steam basket is aluminum. It remains to be seen if this will damage the coating on the rice basket over time or not. It’s worth noting the steam basket is pretty shallow. It is probably adequate for steaming enough vegetables for one or two people at best.

Since we have a separate steamer that is larger and works very well, my wife and I use the rice cooker solely to cook rice. The instructions do not vary for white or brown rice. You have to use the included measuring cup with this cooker and not a conventional measuring cup as each “cup” of rice is actually only 5.33 ounces and not the conventional (American) 8 ounces of rice. If you lose the measuring cup this is just under 3/4 cup using a conventional measuring cup. There are markings on the inside of the rice bowl to show how much water to add depending upon the number of cups of rice you are cooking. It is recommended to wash uncooked rice before adding it to the pot. There are several videos on You Tube that show how to do this with a simple cooking pot, although I purchased a Japanese rice washing bowl from Amazon for this that works much faster and easier. The yield of cooked rice is roughly twice the amount of measured uncooked rice. I find this product does a great job of cooking brown rice. Keep in mind you have to let the rice sit in the cooker with the lid on for about 10-15 minutes after the cooking cycle is completed for it to complete cooking and absorb any remaining moisture. Other reviewers have recommended stirring the rice about halfway through the cooking cycle, and I find this does prevent any rice from sticking to the pot. We have not noticed any water leaking from the steam hole in the lid that has been mentioned by other reviewers, but we only cook 2 cups of rice at any given time, so maybe this occurs with larger batches of rice. Cleanup afterward is pretty easy. None of the rice cooker parts are dishwasher safe, and they have to be washed by hand.

Overall, my wife and I are very pleased with this Oster rice cooker. Its operation is simple and works well for the purpose of cooking rice. The steamer basket is shallow but adequate for one or two people. It is easy to maintain, and since there are no digital electronics involved like more expensive rice cookers I anticipate it will hold up well over time..

I kinda wish it had an extended warming function (I believe this one is up to 5 hours) so that I could set the rice cooker in the morning and have it ready once I get home at night, but for the price and reliability this rice cooker can’t be beat. Don’t forget, this rice cooker also comes with a metal removable steaming basket, in case you’d like to steam your veggies while cooking the rice. Neat!

For those that are interested, I have also cooked brown rice that was cooked perfectly (I just used more water than if I cooked white rice – the amount of extra water needed will vary, depending on how much you cook).

You can steam vegetables, but we do not recommend steaming fish or any other type of meats with this rice cooker.
