Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. How long does the restoration last? How often should this be done?

I used tha year ago, just redid them this month. With just this kit, I would suggest 6-12 months, but I’m sure you can stretch it to 18+ and still be better than before you started. Two things would improve it:
1. A UV protectant, such as the one in 3Ms more expensiveversion of this, or a UV clear coat paint.
2. Buying some 3” wet sanding discs in 5000 and 7000 grit. Maybe even a 10,000 grit.

I just redid mine after a year, but they were only mildly “foggy” with a very faint hint of yellowing, so I started with the 3000 grit this kit includes (skipped all the lower grit since I really didn’t need to remove much of the surface), then did two passes each with 5000 grit and 7000 grit which gave a finish very close to “optically clear”, then applied theincluded rubbing compound. While I was happy with the results of the kit as shipped, I’m even more pleased with the results after using the finer grit papers, and I suspect it will last longer. Adding a UV protectant should make it last longer still.

2. Will one kit restore two headlights?

If your headlight lenses are moderately hazed, this kit is enough to do on car with enough polishing compound to touch up your taillights too. If your lenses are badly hazed/discolored, you should sand them first with 320-400 grit or you will probably run out of discs.

3. It seems most people do one light at a time. Has anyone done both lights at the same time, moving them through each grit stage together?

Actually, that was exactly how I did mine. I was a little freaked out because I was afraid if this doesn’t work I might just screw up both headlights at the same time. Making my vehicle unusable (at night) until I was able to fix it, but I didn’t need to worry. The kit work wonderfully, although until you get to the last step and use the polish you can’t really tell how things are working. Other than the fact that all of the steps seemed to be progressing just as others had said with the lights getting more hazy as you work. As I also said I only wish there were more of the rougher sand paper in the kit. My headlights are quite large (Volvo XC90) and the 3 pieces of sandpaper (per light) didn’t completely do the job. If you have large headlights and if they are hazy (which if you are thinking of using one of these kits they must be) I would think about maybe getting one kit for each headlight or possibly purchase extra sandpaper on you own to start with (something like P600) then once you have the major ‘crud’ removed start with the kit and progress thru the stages.

4. Is there a cheaper alternative tape to the recommended 3M automotive Masking Tape?

I used two types of tape.First, one layer of painters tape.Second, a layer of aluminum foil tape (ASIN: B000BQRBB4).I made sure the foil tape only when on areas first covered by the painters tape.Worked great, I did not sand through the tape to the paint. In one place I got close but the spot was bright blue (painters tape) so I knew to calm down.

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Puffin says: “I really love the results of this product! It took me 4hrs total, but it was worth it to see the end results. This 13 year old stock headlights has never received any treatment and has major oxidation build up. The car is still in mint condition and has been touched up with paint a couple times, but this cloudy headlight was an eye sore! I read reviews before purchasing and was confident I can handle the work. I followed instructions carefully and went back and forth between the 800 grit and wet trizact 3000 sand before I moved onto the
buffing with rubbing compound. As soon as I buffed out the lens, it was becoming more clearer! I was so amazed at the results, and proud of it! I also purchased and used the Meguire’s headlight clear coat to help protect the lens, which is supposed to last up to a year. I would definitely buy this again.
If you have patience and time, you will get the best results from this. It took me 2 hrs per headlight. Everything you need is provided in this kit, all you need is a hand drill (corded or cordless with extra fully charged battery packs), masking tape, a spray bottle with water, and lots of paper towels. I added photos and a time lapses video of my progress. I also worked on the fog lights the following day, picture is shown..

  • BETTER VISIBILITY: Enhances visibility and safety for night driving
  • NO DRILL REQUIRED: Delivers crystal clear finish without sanding or the need for a drill
Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. this may sound like a stupid question but, what side of the pad does one use to apply the liquid to the headlight? The white side or the gray Rough S

No it is not a stupid question. I got confused too in the beginning. You use the gray (rough) side of the pad. The headlight looks little hazy after the application. But the spray brings the shine back.

2. I used this last night without realizing it will rain today. Directions on the spray says to wait 24 hours before exposing to water. Am I in trouble?

If it looks fine you should be fine. The 24 hour recommendation is very conservative to cover all environments and situations. If it dried for a few hours it may be totally fine.

3. Messed up putting on the two step process. How do you correct this?

Mine “looked” like it was messed up after the first part (the abrasive portion of the process). I thought it wouldn’t clean up, so I used toothpaste (mild abrasive). It still didn’t look good. But, I finally applied the final polishing solution and voilla! It looked awesome! I suspect although it looked bad, the second part of the process cleaned it up. Maybe, the toothpaste was unnecessary. I heard about negative results with other Toyotas, like my Tacoma, however, my issue was resolved. I hope your issue is resolved as well. If not, I’d try a different brand and re-do it.

4. How well will this work for my 1997 Avalon? They’re pretty dated and oxidized.

Worked good on my 2000 ford

DEFINITELY TAPE. Don’t skip the step of masking taping up around your headlights. It doesn’t take that long. Use masking tape, painters tape, that kind of tape.

DO IT IN THE SHADE. Definitely do this project in the shade. The reason is that it is so much easier to see if you need to clean the lights more before you spray the coating. In the sun, it will look cleaner than it will in the shade. It’s not the end of the world if you do this in the sun, though. I did for most of the process and it looks awesome.

YOU NEED TOWELS. I used two full size towels doing this. You’re using the towels for buffing off the cleaning solution and for drying after you clean the light. You need separate towels for those two things.

SCRUB HARD. Put some elbow grease into it when you’re doing the Cleaning step.

DON’T WORRY ABOUT PERFECT. Great news–you can do the Cleaning step over and over until you think you got it all clean. When you finish applying the cleaning solution and it dries, buff it off with a dry towel. If you still see darker spots, clean those spots more.

HAZY IS CORRECT AND WEIRD. The weirdest thing about using this stuff is that after you’ve cleaned the light, it will not look clean. It looks hazy and sort of like it has condensation on it. This is the way it is supposed to look. You’ll see. After you buff off the dry cleaning solution, you’ll see that the light looks clean but hazy. That’s exactly what you want. The next step is magic so get ready.

SPRAYING THE COATING IS MAGIC. The best step is spraying the coating on the clean dry light and it magically turns clear and incredible looking. So satisfying..

9. Meguiar’s G17804 Keep Clear Headlight Coating, 1 Pack

Maintain crystal clarity. Meguiar’s Keep Clear Headlight Coating is a proprietary spray coating that helps to improve and maintain optical clarity on freshly cleaned or restored headlights for up to a year. This unique formula provides a durable UV barrier and protective coating, and comes in an easy-to-apply aerosol spray. So whether you’ve just restored your headlights or you simply want to keep your new headlights looking new, our headlight coating will give you the long-lasting clarity you’re looking for.

Meguiar’s G17804 Keep Clear Headlight Coating, 1 Pack

  • Maintains clarity on restored headlights
  • Provides durable UV protection
  • Helps keep new headlights looking like-new
  • Proprietary coating that provides headlight clarity for up to a year
  • Easy aerosol spray application
Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. What is the best way to remove the old coating of this spray coating? The coating is peeling off about 8 months after I applied. I want to re-coat.

3M Headlight lens restoration kit, 39008 requires using a drill and some practice so buy 2 kits and get it right before spraying. Results are outstanding.

2. Does this product need to be removed from the headlight assembly before reapplying within a year?

I reapplied after 14 months, the headlights had a lot of dried Lovebug juice, it is hard as a rock, so I had to clean it. Tried a few bug & tar stains removers and they didn’t do anything. Then tried Solimo99% Isopropyl alcohol sold by Amazon and it took it off. I also notice the original coat of the Meguiars Headlight Coating had hazed a tad, which was not apparent till I fully finished the first lens and compared it to the other side which I had not done yet. The alcohol will haze the lens, but that it just because it dilutes the old headlight coating as it takes it off. You need to use a paper towel cut in 4 pieces and wet it and use one side to clean, then turn it over and use the other side and keep doing it till you are sure all the headlight coating and Lovebug juice is off. Then polish the remaining haze with a dry paper towel. At least that is what I di and it worked great and was easy work.

3. will this work with new headlights?

Yes. This coating works ferfect for new headlights. Keeps them safe from the UV Rays.

4. I messed up but still looks great… i didnt tape the car when i sparyed it so now it drip to my car’s paint. how do i remove it because it has this sticky residue on my paint… also i messed up when i coated it. i started from the bottom towards the top and now it has a bubble/line rhat sticks out like a sore thumb. …

I’m surprised nobody else has mentioned this product overspraying all over the car. I taped it off, was careful, and still had an issue. A clay bar can help to get it off but I feel like the only way to get it off will be to either wait for it to break down or polish/compound it off which is what i plan on doing. I wouldn’t redo it because it took me a good 30 minutes to remove the coating on each headlight between claying and compounding/polishing.

John Juan says: “There are quite a few reviews where buyers report that this coating frosted their headlights and they had to remove it. I suspect that headlight lens material and surface condition along with the atmospheric conditions under which this coating is applied (temperature/humidity/etc.) could affect the results.

I will update this review after several months to see how this stuff holds up to driving, rain, snow, cold, etc..

UPDATE: The coating had started to deteriorate after 13 months and there was baked on bug impact debris on the lenses. I removed the Meguiar’s coating using 70% isopropyl alcohol and inspected the headlights. One headlight was showing a little haze. The other headlight was still mostly nice and clear. I cleared the light haze from both headlights using 3M rubbing compound on a 3M orange foam pad and hand drill and applied another coat of the Meguiar’s spray (two overlapping coats with five minutes of dry time between applications).

You can see in the attached photos what my eleven year old headlights look like as a result of using the Meguiar’s coating along with 3M rubbing compound. This vehicle was always stored outside and exposed to the sun, rain and a lot of snow.

I think this product is worth it for the protection it provides. One 4 oz. can was enough for two full treatments with some left over for next year.

UPDATE #2: Another year has passed, I just recoated my headlights after buffing them with 3M rubbing compound using a pad on a drill. There was a slight bit of haze on the turn signal part of the lenses but the rest of the lenses were still nice and clear. My 12 year old headlights look almost new. I got three full applications (two coats per application) out of one can..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Will this work with amber headlights? Not clear lenses

It will work well on on any plastic lenses if you steel wool themfirst with 0000grade steel wool .it will darken yellow lenses, depending on how many coats youapply. It worked great on my plastic fog lamps on my trailblazer.Unfortunately i havent been able to get this paint to adhere to GLASS lenses. For glasslenses in recommend the acrylic yellow stick on tint.no more expensive because it equals out .good luck.

2. will this give a red turn signal an amber tint for inspection?

no yellow is yellow, red is red

3. will this work for bug lights

Probably ,its incredibly tough !!!!

4. If I get tired of this is it possible to take it off? Or would I have to buy a whole new lense?

I don’t see why paint remover wouldn’t work and that shouldn’t effect your lense. Thanks

Cody Hess says: “Awesome product! Was looking to tint the fog lights on my Subaru Forester and this sure did the trick! I was first looking at cut and place tint until I can across this. It looked so much easier so I thought I would give it a try. When I received the spray tint I was a little skeptical at first as the spray can was quite small.. but I started with removing the fog light grill covers. I taped around the lights lens so any spray wouldn’t get on the cars body. I did about 3-4 coats letting them dry in
between. This item is great! Works extremely well. Better then expected and I was more then satisfied with the end result. It gave the fog lights a nice yellow look. That looks professionaly tinted! Looks clean! Even though the can was small there enought to do 4 coats on each light and still have a little left over.

Pros.
-Exactly what I was looking for
-Extremely easy to use!
-Great quantity in a little can
-Clean finish
-Looks professionaly done

Cons.
-A little expensive but wouldn’t stop me from buying again.

Overall this product is one of the best purchase I have gotten on Amazon. The product performed exactly as expected and even better! Highly recommended this product!.

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Zorgdoff says: “I was quite frankly amazed. Step 1 is to open one of the two (step 1) pouches, unfold the sheet, and wipe all over your headlight. I was able to do two (2) headlights with that one (1) wipe, so I used the second one to do two more headlights. The next thing you do is dry the headlight with paper towel and walk away for a while until it is completely dry. I waited an hour. Step 2 is to open the (step 2) pouch (there is only one of these) you do NOT unfold the sheet, and wipe it
over the entire surface of the headlight. I was able to do four (4) headlights with this. It leaves a wet film on the headlight, and you MUST let it dry. The headlights weren’t completely dry to the touch until I checked them the next morning, so patience is the key here. Don’t be in a hurry, and the result will be stunning.

I read a review that said this didn’t work and made them “more dull”. If that was indeed the case, then the directions weren’t followed. This product works exactly as advertised, the first time. The directions say to not wash your car for the first 24 hours, so I assume that means that you don’t want it out in the rain either. Plan ahead and do this in a garage, if you are able..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. will this product work to remove faded sun spots on the car’s paint?

This product is perfect for defects in the clear coat, removing overspray on paint, paint transfer, and oxidation. If the clear coat is too far gone it will start removing too much so be sure to test the section before doing a larger section. If your clear coat is no longer existing it is best to use our natural car wax to protect the paint that is left as well as blend in the sun fade. We hope this answers your question. Please do not hesitate if you have any further questions.
