Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. How is the bass with these speakers? Most of my music wouldn’t require much, but I do like the occasional gangster rap album.

I have to say I was really surprised at how much
bass these speakers put out. I’m not into rap so
I can’t comment on that. I really had no idea that
speakers this small could put out bass the way
that these do.

2. Does the front plate come off?

There’s a picture showing that the front plate comes off.

3. Will they work well as TV/home theater speakers?

They could. These speakers accept RCA inputs (the round red and white connecrors) , so as long as your TV or device outputs to an RCA connection, you can use these speakers. They also come with a 3.5mm adapter so you could connect a mobile phone, tablet, pc or similar device. If you already have a stereo system and are looking for speakers for it, these are not the best option. These speakers have a built in amp, and the right speaker doesn’t accept standard speaker connections as input.

4. Are these speakers bluetooth?

THESE ARE NOT BLUETOOTH Disregard the answer below that says that these are

I have enjoyed good music in my 70 years on earth. I started like many others, when I was a young teenager with the Stones, Beatles and The Who. My mind was treated to new audio sensations when I started listening to Pink Floyd and the Moody Blues and the like. I have NEVER stopped enjoying music. I appreciate many styles of music from Classical, New Age, Piano Solos to Classic Rock, Hard Rock and screaming guitar solos and heart trobbing drum beats (AC/DC) You can’t begin to enjoy the nuances of these songs without the proper equipment.

Over the years I have gone thru the 33 1/3 era, buying many different turntables & cartridges, looking for the perfect comgination for that just right sound. Then came Audio Cassettes, then Mini-Discs, then CDs, now MP3s, each getting better & better. Of coarse my bank account got smaller and smaller as I insisted on having the best quality I could afford. I always updated my entire sound system so it kept up with the new technology. Not the most expensive but good enough. I ran a small Mobile DJ business for 15 years back in the 80’s I carried about 500 lbs of the biggest and baddest sound system I could get. My client reviews always came out with high marks cause the sound system kicked ass.

What does all this babble have to do with these speakers that I have never heard of in my life? Well…. THEY KICK ASS!!!

I was setting up an exersise gym in my livingroom (Wierd?) and wanted some self powered bookshelf speakers to listen to a few tunes while I used the new Nautilus Treadmill. I came across the Edifiers R1280T’s and started reading the reviews and was slightly dissapointed with some of the negative reviews. BUT…. there were plenty of satisfied customers to convince me to order them.

I set them up on a piece of furniture with my 32″ Visio TV & trusty Tivo. I plugged in a few wires & cables turned on the TV, pulled up the concert on the Tivo of John Fogerty: The Long Road Home and it starts off with “Playing in a Traveling Band” I cranked those speakers up so loud I thought they were going to melt. The bass notes were clean and solid. the specs on these speakers say 75 to 18k frequency response but It sounds like a much bigger range than that. The vocals are clear, the guitar breaks will give you chills. The audience cheering makes you think you are there. It almost makes me want to smoke some of that wacky stuff. When finished I logged on to Pandora music streaming to the “New Age Piano Solo” channel and lowered the volume down to a whisper. Beautiful, Beautiful clean full music!!

These Edifiers are the best bookshelf size speakers I have ever owned!! I am really impressed. I wish everyone could come over to my house and I’ll put on a thrilling rock party for you. (even at 70 I still get the itch for a party) Next test, I’m gonna plug in my Samsung Galaxy S7e and crank it up on a song by Golden Earring: “Radar Love” and let it work it’s way thru the other 1000+ songs. It works great on Smart Phones Tablets & Laptops.

I am very pleased with these speakers. I wish you could hear what I hear. You can!! GO BUY YOUR OWN. PLAY IT LOUD and ENJOY!
Hope this helped..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. whats the difference between UC optimized and microsoft optimized version?

I have both versions, as far as compatibility with WebEx on USB connection – both the MS and UC versions seem to work identically. They both synchronize the mute button / LED lights on the unit with the mute icon in WebEx.They were also able to be paired to each other (one 710UC and one 710MS) for stereo conferencing / across the room from each other.

2. does this work with Mac?

Works perfect, bit you hace to select it like you Chanel for sound in and out, in System Preferences, I’m working in Yosemite in laptop and Mavericks in desktop.

3. Can I connect the 510 to my PC via Bluetooth, or is the bluetooth just for mobile devices and USB is for PC/Mac?

i received the 510 and it connects to my laptop (using built in BT), but it doesnt seem to show anywhere as a usable device. Its not listed in my sound options as a general or communication device or show in my various Softphone related applications. It does show in my devices and printers list as a headset, but that is the only place it shows up.From what i have read it may need the Jabra Link 360 to work as a BT device on a PC? If you were able to set it up on your PC without this device can you provide more details if you had to do anything special?

4. How long is the cord?

I did not measure, but the cord appears to be approx. 3-4′ long. It would definitely be nice if it was longer. It barely reaches from my computer tower to under my monitor (but i have a big desk).
My recommendation is to buy a cheap usb entension cable from amazon or ebay.

Update: July 2018
Nearly a year after this was purchased and initially reviewed, it is still performing at the same excellent level as when I bought it. Since the original review last summer, I’ve probably made 100+ hours of conference calls on it via USB cable and it is also my go-to speaker in my home office when I’m having issues with call quality on a desk phone, or when my headset battery dies. I’ve successfully used this speaker on a recent model IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad, HP Elitebook, and a Dell Latitude business-grade laptop model. The speaker has performed flawlessly on all of them. Last month I had to take a call in a network room where the speaker was literally placed 12″ away from a Cisco 3750 switch, and the conference participants couldn’t hear the background fan noise from the switch. I’d say the background noise cancellation is probably the best I’ve ever experienced from any Speakerphone model. If I could rate this item 6/5 stars, I would..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. How is this product different (inferior?) to the much more expensive R2000db model?

The R2000DB has two obvious features that help produce a superior sound as compared to the R1700BT.
1) a 5″ main speaker (woofer) as compared to the 4″ speaker found on the 1700.
Yes it’s only an inch larger but with small speakers an additional 1″ is large bump up. (Just as a 3 inch speaker would be a huge step down!). The inch increase brings a substantial increase in deeper base and more room filling sound. It will also offer higher quality music reproduction at a higher/louder volume with better separation of midrange sounds. So you can play it louder than the 1700 before any real notice of compromising sound quality.
2) The R2000 has a considerably larger amplifier. 120 RMS as compared to the 1700’s 66 RMS. This supplies the power needed to push that 5″ speaker and provide quality sound. I personally feel the amplifier size is more important than speaker size. Don’t be fooled by underpowered “Powered” speakers.
There are additional benefits of the 2000 covered by another answer. Size, range of the BT, and plug in options are all better and bigger with the 2000. I’ve chosen to speak to the 2 options that make the biggest contribution to better sound when comparing the two.

2. are these good enough without a dedicated powered subwoofer?

These speakers are really just glorified computer speakers!!There’s even a designated input just for your PC, that’s why they’re only $99!!And they only have 4″ driver/woofers.These were not designed to be so called a ‘theater 5.1 Dolby surround sound system’! I’m not saying that they are not good speakers but a lot of people don’t understand that when you are spending $99 on a pair of speakers that have Bluetooth built in and it actually has a designated RCA input labeled ‘PC’!And the reviews that I’ve read about them not being that loud and I read one about how it was louder hooking it up to your computer than it was when you had it hooked up to your TV!!!!First of all I’m going to guarantee that these are consumer rated at-10dB for the line input, which means that they are not going to perform like professional +4dB line level speakers! When hooking them to your TV, I don’t know exactly what you did but you also have to make sure that you go into the settings on your TV and find your audio out settings and change it from the built-in speakers to ‘line out’ or external speakers, or whatever your TV labels it as, because if your signal doesn’t know where to go or how it should react when it gets there, it’s probably the reason that it sounds louder coming from your PC because the speaker inputs are built and rated to match the rating of the computer outputs and they are most likely both rated at -10dB which is a consumer rating! If you’re looking for a theatre system performance ..you’re going to have to spend more than $99!!!

3. Can i have the speakers stay plugged into my tv, and then use my phone or laptop to bluetooth audio to the speakers?

Yes! You chose line input for TV and Bluetooth For laptop or cell phone.

4. does this work with alexa

It will work with Echo Dot, or any Echo device with a headphone output jack.

I rarely leave reviews but these speakers deserve one.

First off to give a little perspective I rarely venture outside of Klipsch products. I have plenty of experience with all sorts of high end audio equipment from B&O to reference HK, NAD receivers, so on and so forth… so my amazement with these speakers is not due to never hearing any high end equipment.

So why did I even take a chance with these? My little sister wanted a record player setup so I got her an Audio Technica LP60 to start her beginner setup. I wanted a pair of bookshelf speakers for a clean setup and I wanted the speakers to be powered so she didn’t need to mess with an amp. That ruled out the Klipsch bookshelf speakers at this price point and unfortunately I couldn’t use the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system (best bang for my buck of all time, have had them for over 10 years now) as it has a separate sub and too many cables for it to be attractive with her setup.

Aesthetically, these are knockouts considering the price point. The fit and finish is excellent, they have a healthy weight to them and no one would suspect that this isn’t real wood. I personally very much like the look with the speaker grills off. It presents itself as a speaker pair only acquired with a higher budget.

The important part – sound. They blew me away when I first set them up. They are bright, distortion free and have a surprising amount of bass. In fact, even though I am normally a bass fanatic these satisfy me in nearly every genre of music outside of EDM. They do run out of steam when playing Odesza for example but it is not a bad sound, the mid just starts to pull away and take over. Also, these things can get LOUD. More importantly, there is very little distortion up until max and the separation in instruments/vocals remain.

I do not know how many this will help but as I am typing this review I have the speakers sitting directly beside my Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system. It has been a gold standard for me for over a decade in terms of price vs. performance and while this is not exactly apples to apples (2.0 to 2.1) it may provide some relative insight for similarly priced often computer speaker systems. The Klipsch sounds bigger as if a wider sound stage but this may be largely due to the powered subwoofer. Obviously, the Klipsch wipes the floor in terms of bass performance because of the sub and with the horns in the speakers it does often sound a bit brighter. The Edifier however consistently sounds warmer and a bit tighter. When comparing the two systems side by side the real determining factor is how much bass you need and/or if you need a bookshelf setup as with 95% of media they both perform beautifully. It is only in the bass heavy applications the similarly priced Klipsch system pulls ahead.

Additionally, the bluetooth works very well and there is very little lag or interference. The range is great, too.

All in all, for a pair of speakers I would have never even considered if it weren’t for this budget system I am putting together, I am incredibly impressed. So much so that I may cheat on Klipsch and purchase Edifier’s higher end bookshelf system and really see what this company is capable of..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Does thing make you say, ” woah, this thing is pretty loud for being that size.”?

To be honest, no it doesn’t and I’m not picky. I was expecting it to be super loud because the reviews and description hype it up. It’s ok for its size. No excessive wow factor.

2. How tall is the speaker ?

Standing it’s about 7 or 8 inches tall

3. With two speakers can one iPhone connect to both of them?

Yes. If you have two speakers follow the directions to pair the speakers using the tws button, then pair them to your device.

4. Does it work while it’s plugged in if the battery is dead?

There is no reason why it should not work. so the answer is YES it should work while plugged in even if battery is empty. I did not have that case it a normal case for plugged in devices

Now for the device itself:
It is very loud. Much louder than I expected, which is awesome. The sound quality itself is very good as well. Clear sounding music. It is very easy to operate and to pair via Bluetooth. The new device holds a charge for a long time, and I haven’t seemed to have any issues. I want to buy another so I can pair both of them together and have even louder sound.

Now for my one complaint:
Even though this device is advertised as “waterproof”, take that lightly. If you continue reading in the description, it states that is is more water-resistant than anything. I am happy I read that before using the device, as I assumed when I first bought it that I could use it in the shower. To cut the risk of ruining the device, I hang it outside of the shower where it is in reach in case I want to change what I’m listening to, but that way it’s safe from possible damage.

Overall, I am beyond pleased with the device, and more importantly the seller. If you have a problem, try communicating as it can get you very far. Stuff happens. Sometimes things come defective. It’s how it’s handled that matters. I think this speaker is way above the other ones I’ve tried..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I like these speakers, but I already have a DAC; is hooking up these speakers (with their built-in- DAC) to a system with a DAC a problem?

If you have an existing DAC, I’d suggest looking into the Audioengine A2 original version.Differences between A2 and A2+:USB digital-to-analog converter (DAC)Variable audio output (connect a subwoofer or wirelessly send audio to other speakers with our optional W3 wireless adapter)Upgraded speaker connectorsStandard 1/4″ threaded inserts for wall mountsUpgraded power supplyUpgraded accessory cables

2. If I hook up these speakers via USB, can volume still be controlled by the computer or it needs to be controlled with the knob on the back of the speaker?

It can be controlled both by the volume on the back of the speakers as well as the computer usb input into the speakers.

3. These or Bose Companion 3? Thanks

These. I have the Bose Companion 3’s. The power and speaker cable look the same so it’s easy to do what I did mix them up when moving the speakers and replugging the cables. This broke my speaker cable so now I only have audio from one speaker. The cable isn’t standard so it’s really hard , close to impossible, to replace it . Go with this , the audio quality is probably better and it uses standard cables.

4. Will the output of the speaker power a sub woofer? The sub I’m looking to power is 50 watts RMS

I don’t think the question is clear; if he’s saying that the sub is 50W, isn’t it already a powered sub? So I’m sure it can be used with the A2’s. I have a non-AE sub connected off the binding posts on the back of the “hot” speaker, and the whole works is connected to my iMac via the standard 1/8″ stereo jack also on the back of the A2. The balance between the A2s and the sub is set by altering either the sub’s independent gain control or the A2’s, and then overall system volume is controlled by the computer’s volume controls. Works very well for me. I’ve thought about switching to a digital audio connection from the Mac but honestly this is not my main listening environment and I didn’t feel that it was necessary to have yet another USB interface connected to the computer. The one thing that this setup does not provide is a low-end cutoff (i.e. a highpass filter) for the A2s. Be mindful of the fact that even if you have a sub connected, you’re not removing the potentially overpowering bass signal from the A2s themselves.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. would these speakers be loud enough for a dance party in my apartment?

We believe these speakers would be loud enough for your dance party. Whenever we get a new model in the office we often tend to crank up the speakers and have our own office parties.

2. Which version of Bluethooth these speaker use? 3.0? 4.0?

These speakers use Bluetooth 4.0.

3. do i need an amplifier to connect these to the tv and watch movies?

No need. You can connect directly to your TV. These have built-in amplifier and all cables are included.

4. Can I buy an extender for the 10 ft speaker cable or a longer speaker cable?

In theory you should be able extend it, but the problem you will run into is the non-standard connector used. You would need to find an extender cable for that 5-pin connector that uses at least 16 gauge cable to carry the amplified speaker single. If you can find cable, then you should be able to go up to about 50 feet before you notice any problems.

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Charles J. Hampton-SnowTop Contributor: Photography says: “These speakers, at the time of this writing, have an 84% 5 star rating here and they deserve it. Right out of the box, they are a WOW in sound and also looks (I purchased the black pair while they were on sale). Maybe overkill as a computer speaker, but I’m listening to them now and they sound incredible. In my home I have multiple stereo set-ups with Boston Acoustics, Klipsch, Polk and JBL speakers. These easily hold their own against anything else I have. I do have these attached directly to my PC (not by Bluetooth) in order to utilize
the Maxx Pro Audio settings built into my PC and the combination is impressive. On lower volumes or loud , these are amazing for the price. I read countless reviews and did consider the similarly priced Bose Companion 20 which I auditioned but no way are those an equal to these. Maybe not cheap, but this is a purchase you will not regret. Edifier, a brand I have not heard of till I started looking for computer speakers, has created one helluva great speaker. Those cheaper 3 piece systems (which i did go into stores to listen to ) just do not sound a good as this 2 piece. The bass is phenomenal, vocals are clear. no complaints at all..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. how many come in the box 1 or 2

Each order ships 2 speakers individually boxed it comes as 2 boxes in 1 box

2. What gauge speaker wire is best for these?

Depending on how far you need to run the wire, 16 or 14 gauge stranded for short runs or 12 -10 gauge stranded for longer runs.. 30 – 50′ or so short/over that is long and requires heavy like-12-10 gauge

3. Are these speakers paintable?

I don’t know. I won’t, you would plug up the holes and I think effect the sound.

4. Im looking to purchase, are these suppose to be hard wired to 120v supply or does it come with some type of adapter that you plug in to a receptacle?

These are wired to an amplifier via speaker wire.
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Alexander Leon Williamson says: “I installed these in my Patio, They have great sound output. I turned the volume up and there was no distortion. I bought two more pairs, one for the dinning room and one for my Boat. Yes, they are that good. I have speakers in my living room, and I am thinking I might replace them as well, but one project at a time. I looked at several other speakers, they all look to be about the same price but people were not satisfied with the sound output of them. These had higher reviews and some said the sound quality was
good and now I see why, they sound great. They shipped them out quickly. Only complaint I would register is that the template they give us is easily torn (only one for the set) as mine did on the patio, so I used the face-plate grill, just unsnap it, trace the outline of it and it was the perfect size. The grill went back on without issues. Great value for the price..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. compared to logitech z623? better or worst

I own both. Both are THX certified 2.1 speaker sets. Both connect up in a similar fashion. To me, the Logitech z623 are better. The Klipsch have some very weird stereo phase that makes things sound a bit off. The bass is much less defined than the z623. The bass is really weak/flabby and the highs are bit exaggerated on the Klipsch. I will say I prefer the speaker connections on the Klipsch, but that is about all I prefer about the Klipsch. I used to have a 5.1 system from Klipsch for an old gaming PC that was incredible, but seems like they have gone downhill recently. The z623 I have connected to my gaming PC, which I also use to watch movies. They have a big sound, tight bass, and decent imaging. The z623 do have a slight hum to them where the Klipsch do not. The hum on the z623 is so low that I rarely notice it.

2. what inputs does this accept. Coaxial? analog RCA, or Optical?

just rca from your computer audio out jack. cheers

3. im in college, how is the bass i want something that kicks and maybe even shakes the desk how do these compare to the logitech z623

more bass than you will need, excellent sound as w/all klipsch higher end speakers, and these are THX certified, which means more than most people realize, people complain about the volume and bass controls, you do not need to use them-set it where you want and then use your computer to control volume, and whatever sound platform you have use that to fine tune them. They do also require a burn in period as all speakers do,they just sound better and better.I am going on 3 years of problem free awesome sound. And with them being THX certified you will hear things you wont from non certified speakers-they do not just give that rating to anything,a lot of testing and research earns them that title.
Btw i am disabled and spend a lot of time on my back and these speakers play for a minimum of 12 hrs a day,if not more,i have no need or desire to try a different set of speakers. My home theater is also all Klipsch, their RP series, which are also top notch,Klipsch does not disappoint.

4. Do these speakers have a grille over them, or are they just open? From the pic it appears they are exposed.

Yes, there is a cloth-like frame over them. You can see an image here: http://www.bizrate.com/computer-speakers/7386580.html

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Does this item have a “hiss” when it is turned on but not playing music?

The only time I have noticed a hiss sound with my Bongo is when I have plugged it into my computer’s line out jack alongside a USB port for charging the batteries. Otherwise, when it is turned on and not playing anything., it is totally silent.

2. How is the bass?

It’s a great speaker but the bass is not prominent. Clear sound.

3. Is it possible to get a replacement battery? Mine will no longer charge…

Sorry! That’s rechargeable battery built-in.

4. My bongo seems to work fine but the light blinks red and white. Shouldn’t it be solid white?

Mine was doing that as well before it died. I contacted the company and they replace it.
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Jeff K says: “I’ve had my Bongo for a few days now and love it. The main reason why I purchased one was I wanted the portability that it offers. We spend a lot of time in the pool or hot tub and I had used a Bluetooth speaker to listen to my play lists. The speaker works fine until you want to change something or turn off the back yard lights. I’d have to yell so Alexa (which was in the house) could hear me along with all of my neighbors. So I started searching for a Bluetooth speaker that not only played
from the Echo but could also talk to it. Then I found Bongo. I ordered one and it was delivered the next day (Amazon is amazing!). I plugged it in to let it fully charge and installed the Dot but couldn’t get it to turn on. I finally discovered you have to hold the power button for a few seconds – a quick tap will not do it. As far as the sound quality – its a HUGE improvement over the Dot itself. Sure its not the same sound quality as a $1000 Bose system but its pretty impressive for a $50 investment. I’m also impressed with the range. I know that has nothing to do with the Bongo itself but with my higher end WiFi router I can walk the Bongo / Dot to any corner of my 1 acre lot without any drop outs. As far as battery life – the jury is still out. I have used it for 2-3 hours without an issue. Time will tell how it works after a few months of charging / discharging cycles. I have not used the Cell phone recharge port yet..
