Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Does it have similar sound quality to an alexa or google home? or perhaps better?

Tremendous sound. Pulls in stations I’ve never heard on any other radio, and I’ve a few out here in remote ranch country. However I can’t compare to those cityfolk products in your question. It is a DGLU, this radio. (Darn good little unit.)

2. live in mountians, hows the reception, ?

Not good at all i live in the rockies at 7250 elev and can get 1 station on this radio i compared it to my other radio i get at least 25 stations.

3. Can I connect my phone to it through bluetooth?

Yes, you can connect any Bluetooth enabled advice with this product.

4. How do i tune this radio? the numbers do not seem to match up with the numbers broadcasted by radio stations? for example, i’m looking for 89.9…

This is a 1960’s replica. In the 60’s the radios didn’t have digital tuning. You just scrolled (turn the knob) along the printed numerous until you were at the desired station. The closer you got to the station, the better the reception was.

  • Includes Switching AC Adapter 100-240V, 50/60H
Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Why is this radio so ridiculously expensive compared to the better reviewed, larger models from the same brand? Is it actually worth it?

They are trying to be retro without a cheesy plastic case. They are trying to get a somewhat older sound, the reason for one speaker. The enclosure is a ported (or bass reflex) enclosure, you pay for that, the other more modern design looking radios are neither sealed (acoustic suspension) nor ported, both found in stereo systems, just speakers in a plastic box. You can run it off the wall or an external battery. The tuner is stereo if you output the sound via of the output jack on the back, or headphones, so the turner which is very good could front end an amp.It has a simple old no nonsense design of the past, that many people like, a decent wood cabinet, has good sound and is a good desk, book shelf, boat, kitchen radio. You can buy and plug in a blue tooth device in the back, I prefer this because a lot of time built-in Bluetooth in devices like this can’t get thier firmware upgraded.Yes, it’s would it, especially if you enjoy, less is more, objects for their design and looks.

2. Is the bass “boomy” or well balanced with the treble? Is there a tone control?

The 70’s trick of tightly filling the port with drinking straws, extends the port tube length to lower the pitch. You can also block some of the straws to get the port tune pitch even lower. The same approach will fix compact subwoofers. Alternative is to shrink the port tube diameter by taping in one or more pencils (wooden dowel with rounded ends).
The above will make the port work correctly, IF the cabinet meets the minimum size permissible for its speaker.Note the if.
However, when the cabinet is Not big enough for its speaker, then use cheesecloth (stuffed port diverts power towards imitating a larger cabinet).
Or,
for the adventurous, a combination of cheesecloth and straws can work (because a port is usable after causing the cabinet to seem big enough for its speaker).
P.S.
These concepts are usable with any speaker. Additionally, if you’d like a slight loudness contour effect, you can enclose some cheesecloth in the radio, directly behind the speaker. Worth a mention: To avoid redo’s, let a brand new speaker break in for at least 30 hours (before cabinet/port modification) because the tone levels out and the bass works Slightly better after initial break-in. And, oddly like un-bending aluminum, there’s no cost to take off Half the error, so aim for that much initially (get serviceability, hit the ballpark, then re-check).

3. Can this radio run on batteries only?

Hi. All my e!ectricity is 12 volt, off the grid, so I got a 12 volt adapter that plugs into a 12V socket, so in that sense it CAN run off batteries but it has no place to insert batteries.

4. Does this radio pick up much interference? I am looking for a radio for my shop to replace my current one which picks up a lot of interference.

It is probably not the radio’s fault, and buying a new radio probably won’t help. In this age of LED lighting all radios are susceptible to RFI (Radio Frequency Interference). LED lights are the biggest culprits, even though FCC regulations say appliances cannot emit radio interference. The Chinese manufacturers ignore these regulations and the FCC does not have the budget to enforce its own regulations. So here is what you can do: identify the offending LED(s). 1)Turn on a battery powered portable radio to a weak AM station where you are getting lots of interference. 2) Go to your house circuit breaker panel and turn off one breaker at a time. If the reception improves with one circuit breaker off, find that circuit in the house; 3) Radio in hand, with the circuit back on, and all other circuits turned off, use the radio to find the offending source(s); 4) Remove the offending source(s) from the circuit (unplug or turn off) and see if it improves reception; 5) Do this for each circuit which produces RFI. NOTE: It can also be coming from your neighbor’s house or an LED streetlight or a failing electric company power transformer.

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

mkl says: “RADIOS: I own the Sangean WR-15, WR-11, and the WR-11 SE. Comparing all three side by side, it is my opinion that the internal electronics design is very similar if not identical. All tune the same way, lock into stations the same way, etc. All three are excellent radios and the best I have ever found in the table top radio market. The only difference between the WR-11 and the WR-11 SE is the color of the face plate. SOUND: The WR-15 has a slightly less deep base than the other two. I suspect this is a function of the cabinet
RADIOS: I own the Sangean WR-15, WR-11, and the WR-11 SE.

I suspect this is a function of the cabinet size rather than any difference in the electronics. The larger cabinet of the WR-11 and WR-11 SE seem to give a deeper and richer base response. If you listen to AM talk radio, the WR-15 may be the best for you; if FM music is your preference the WR-11 or the WR-11 SE could be your preference. In any event, the difference is slight, and some reviews state that the deeper base can be corrected by inserting a couple of cotton balls in the sound port located on the back of the WR-11 radios.

POWER OUTPUT: All three radios have the same power output delivered to the speaker.

POWER SUPPLY: The WR-15 supply has a “wall wart” built into the cord which plugs into the 115 VAC line. The other two WR-11s have just a plain two prong power plug. All three operate off 12 volts DC as far as the internal electronics is concerned. Unfortunately all three also use a “switching” power supply to convert the line voltage to 12 volts DC. A comment from one of the radio vendors states that all radios imported into the U.S. are required by law to use switching power supplies.

While switching power supplies are indeed more efficient than “linear” power supplies, they also can introduce a small amount of interference on the AM radio band. This is generally heard as a low level buzz or hum when critically listening to AM stations. Casual listeners probably will never notice it; critical listeners and those using head phones may.

The only way around this very minor problem on AM (it does not occur on FM) is to power the radio with a linear power supply plugged into the 12 volt input jack on the back of the radio. I have done this using several different linear supplies and it will eliminate the low level noise generated by the switching supply that comes with the radio (the switching supply is built into the cabinet in the WR-11 radios.) Again, the difference between the switching and linear supplies will only be noticed by the most critical AM listener but it does exist.

12 volt linear supplies — usually rated at 13.8 VDC– can be found on amazon. Get one rated at least at four amps and avoid those wall wart supplies advertised as linear. You will have to purchase a 5.5mm plug to match the 12 volt input jack on the back of the radios (also found on amazon). Just FYI 13.8 VDC is the nominal output of a car or boat alternator when the car/boat is running; the 12.0 VDC is the output of a 12 volt battery when not being charged. The radios don’t care, both voltages work just fine.

RECEPTION: I live in a major metropolitan area so I can’t really comment on weak signal reception since the farthest station I listen to is no more than 60 miles away. Check the other reviews for comments on this aspect of the radios. I can tell you being a ham radio operator that really weak AM signals require a communications receiver in the $1000.00 plus market to pull in those signals and screen out the external interference.

SUMMARY: Any of the three radios reviewed above are the absolute best table top radios I have ever listened to. Build quality seems excellent and fidelity far surpasses anything I’ve ever heard from similar radios. I really don’t think you wil find a better radio in this class of receivers.

NOTE: I have left this review on both the WR-15 and the WR-11 offerings by Amazon..

Full disclosure: I work in broadcasting (former FM DJ and radio news anchor), so to say the least — I’m a bit of an audio snob.

But I’m also a pragmatist. I’m looking at this radio through the eyes of someone who remembers what radios used to cost, and how they used to sound.

That said, let’s dive in.

I paid $23.00 for this little guy — free shipping — and it arrived within two days.

Initial thoughts:

— It’s cute as all hell.
— It’s plastic (of course) but it has a solid feel to it.
— It arrived fully charged — turned right on.
— Others have complained about the lack of smoothness in the volume knob; I had the same problem at first, but once you start using it, the knob smoothed itself out, allowing a nice variable volume control.
— Bluetooth pairing with my MacBook Air was instantaneous.
— The sound is awesome* (*FOR A UNIT THAT COULD ALMOST FIT IN YOUR POCKET, COSTING ONLY $23!!!)

Doing a deeper dive:

— The two silver knobs (selector and volume) have a decently solid feel, but use them GENTLY, especially the selector knob; each of the 4 positions are quite close to each other, so a light touch is best.
— The radio dial. It lights up in a gorgeous period-authentic golden glow, and stays on even during bluetooth mode when you’re not using the radio. It has a tight, solid, and precise feel to it, even if the dial markings are pretty far off (CBS-FM here in New York City — 101.1 — was between 102 and 103). Frankly, this is not a big deal for me; once you figure out the stations on the actual dial position — very few analog dial radios (especially in this price range) have ever been exact.
— Use the antenna. Despite being non-directional, it helps tremendously with pulling in the stations.
— FM sounded great, but AM was actually the big surprise here. AM talk radio sounds so rich and full, you’d almost swear you were inside the station, listening to a studio monitor.
— This little guy also does a fair job of pulling in shortwave. BUT — don’t get too excited — and don’t buy this just for the shortwave. If you’re really serious about shortwave, get an actual shortwave radio. Still — it does a good job of pulling in overseas signals — as long as you’re patient, deliberate, and delicate with the dial.

Review:

Here’s where my audio snobbishness is tempered by my pragmatism and experience. I remember how much “transistor” radios used to cost back in the day (1977): the equivalent of $70 in today’s dollars, AM only, with an (at best) tinny-sounding little speaker.

To get this kind of sound — AM, FM, *and* shortwave (not to mention the unheard-of-in-1977 ability to plug in 2,000 hours of programming with a chip the size of your fingernail, PLUS the ability to connect to basically the entire WORLD via bluetooth) — one would have had to spend upwards of $700 (of today’s dollars) back in 1977.

So — for 20 bucks and change — this little guy is a gem!!

Final analysis:

I’m planning on using this radio primarily for music and news in the kitchen (which is why I needed both AM and FM). This radio delivers a bigger punch, wider range, and richer sound than the “table radios” (with much bigger speakers) of the ’60s-’80s. It’s more than enough to fill my 1920 10×12 (“closed”) kitchen with rich sound.

*BONUS*!!!

It takes a mini-SD card onto which I’m going to download my old-timey radio shows, and have on my bedside, as I drift off to sleep, back into the 1940s.

FINALLY, A WORD OF CAUTION ABOUT THE BATTERY:

It’s a sealed battery that can be charged only via USB.

***IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AND NEVER PLUG THE USB INTO A CHARGER THAT PUMPS MORE THAN FIVE VOLTS OF DIRECT CURRENT INTO A MAXIMUM OF 1000 MILLIAMPS PER HOUR (“DC5V/1000MaH”).***

Not all USBs are created equal. Some of the new wall adapters and power strips have built-in USB chargers that push out 5 volts of DC power into as much as 2,400 Milliamps per hour. That kind of power will ultimately fry the radio’s battery; it’s like trying to fill a shot glass with a fire hose. This little guy needs to sip power, not gulp it like your MacBook. Look carefully at the charger’s output before you plug it in — and when in doubt — DON’T.

FINAL THOUGHT:

Given its tiny size (but big sound), this little guy is perfect for college dorm rooms … on your desk at the office … in the kitchen or (extremely well-ventilated) bathroom (use common sense and don’t give it a steam bath or allow it to get wet).

It’s also a great gift idea for housewarmings, Secret Santa grab-bag-style gift exchanges, etc.

Enjoy!!!.

KG says: “I usually don’t fill these reviews out but I was very impressed with this speaker. Not sure if the video attached to this review. If so, I wanted to show the speaker size compared to a mini shampoo bottle. The sound from my phone recording does not even show how great the sound quality really is, exceptional bass from such a small speaker. Some of the other reviews mentioned how the radio did not have very good radio reception. Important fact, Leave your radio charging cable plugged into the radio, just the radio, not the outlet unless you are charging it.
The cable in the correct position works as a great antenna. I use this radio/speaker in my bathroom,in the middle of my house, with no windows. Most radio stations come in very clear that way. The Bluetooth works perfect. The battery life lasts quite a while. I had the radio/speaker for 15 days and use it for about 30 mins a day, before I had to recharge it. I would highly recommend this speaker. If this company paid referral bonuses, I would make some nice extra cash. Great speaker..

17. Sangean WR-2 AM / FM-RBDS Wooden Cabinet Digital Tuning Radio (Walnut)

Color:Walnut Product Description Digital AM/FM Table Top Receiver designed to provide exceptional audio reproduction utilizing a special acoustically balanced enclosure combined with a enhanced frequency response speaker and Sangean’s advanced audio circuitry providing the sound and features of a large home stereo system. Amazon.com Boasting an acoustically balanced wooden enclosure and an enhanced front-firing 3-inch speaker, the Sangean WR-2 tabletop radio offers the sound and features of a living room system in a cabinet that fits conveniently in a bedroom, kitchen, or garage.

Any discussion of the WR-2 begins with its walnut-finished wooden housing, which is rich in both appearance and tone. The cabinet’s front surface features the speaker on the left side, a series of intuitively placed control buttons toward the bottom, and a generously sized LCD display in the middle with three brightness levels. More importantly, the cabinet teams with the 7-watt amplifier and the acoustic bass compensation system to add warmth and depth to the audio.

Complementing the housing is Sangean’s advanced RF/IF electronic circuitry, which picks up distant AM and FM stations and reproduces them with unmatched clarity, making music and even talk programs come alive. Even though the WR-2 is advertised as an AM/FM radio, it offers much more than a standard digital tuner, including a Radio Data System (RDS) that displays short text messages on applicable FM stations, along with support for the Enhanced Other Network (EON) and its traffic information (available in certain regions).

And unlike most tabletop radios, the WR-2 lets listeners adjust the treble and bass levels via the variable volume control. In its default mode, the rotary volume knob displays the volume level from 1 to 60. Tap it once, however, and it turns into a full-range treble control, and two taps creates a full-range bass control. Additional features include a clock with an alarm (radio or buzzer), an auxiliary input jack for connecting such devices as an iPod or MP3 player (both of which sound great through the speaker), a recording output jack, 10 memory presets that help you quickly

find your favorite stations, and a full-featured infrared remote control. A final bonus stems from the power backup function, which plays the radio for six minutes during a power failure (ideal for emergencies) and retains the memory preset and clock values for about an hour. The WR-2 measures roughly 9.5 by 4.5 by 6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 pounds. What’s in the Box WR-2 tabletop radio, detachable power cord, infrared remote control, user’s manual.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Can an A M antennae be connected

Yes, it comes with an AM external antenna, probably about 36 inches long, but you can easily add a longer one if you wish.
MY MISTAKE: It comes with an external FM antenna, but an external AM antenna can be added. Sorry for my initial error.

2. is there a timer to shut the radio off after an hour or what ever?

The sleep timer can be set in increments of 15 minutes with 15 being the shortest and 60 being the longest time it will stay on before automatically turning off.

3. can the radio be used with batteries so i can take it from room to room without having to plug it in. thnks

Yes, it has a 12V DC input socket (for vehicles, boats, etc.).An AC power adaptor (not included) with 1 Ampere and center positive in polarity can also power the radio in house. However, please note that the radio weight is 2.6 kgs, and thus is not particularly designed to be portable. If you are looking for a radio to carry with you wherever you go, I would recommend that you buy a smaller, lighter radio.

4. Does the WR-2 have an ear phone plug

headphone jack is located on the front of the radio. when plugged in, the loudspeaker is automatically disconnected.

This is an excellent table-top clock radio. I’ll provide some usage tips and mention some aspects that could be designed better. Overall I do recommend this radio.

NOTE: The picture on the product page as of this date is of the discontinued older version! See my attached picture of the front panel of the current version 2.

It is a very attractive design.

The radio uses an internal AM antenna and the power cord is the FM antenna. The radio has connectors for external AM and FM antennas. I use it in a location that has very poor AM and FM reception. Even with the built-in antennas the radio has surprisingly good reception – about the best I’ve ever seen including Nakamichi and Boston Acoustics radios. I connected an external single-wire FM antenna and reception is excellent. I’ll speculate that an external dipole antenna or possibly an antenna with gain would do even better if you are in an area with truly terrible reception.

Sound quality is quite good. Bass and treble tone controls give you some choice!

There are five preset buttons. They give you five presets each for AM and FM.

One alarm is provided and it can be used with a buzzer or any AM or FM station. Assuming a radio station is being used: The alarm is set using an onscreen menu that takes you through hours, minutes, frequency (once, daily, weekday, weekend), AM or FM, station or preset), volume. Push the alarm button for a few seconds and the menu starts blinking. Rotate the tuning knob to select a choice and push the knob to set the choice and move to the next menu item.

The time can be set automatically using the Radio Digital System (RDS) although in my area that does not work. I set it manually using the menu.

The display has 8 brightness levels including full off.

USAGE TIPS, mostly relating to the alarm:

Do you only use the alarm some days? Set it for a “once” frequency. The radio remembers the settings. When you want to activate the alarm just press the alarm button for a few seconds. When the alarm wakes you and you turn it off, it is inactive until you again press the alarm button for a few seconds.

Do you use the same alarm every day? Set it for “daily.” After waking and turning off the alarm it will remember all settings and go off again tomorrow.

Do you only change the time and never want to change the AM/FM station or volume? No need to go through the whole menu. Set the desired time and stop pushing any buttons. The display stops blinking after a few seconds and the alarm is activated using your new wake-up time.

Design improvements needed:

Not a design change, but the tips above could be added to the instruction manual!

The tuning knob is shallow – it should stick out farther from the front panel so it would be easier to grip and turn.

When waking up the alarm can be turned off by pushing the blue power button or by pushing the alarm button (bottom row, third – radio or fourth – buzzer from the right.) A larger or more-prominent “alarm off” button would be nice.

The display really should auto-adjust brightness based on ambient light level.

Again, though, I strongly recommend this radio. The changes noted would just make it better – hopefully Sangean will see this review..
