What Real Customers Say About This Product?

R. Swanson says: “A neighborhood friend of mine, Debo, had asked to borrow my bike but ended up taking a really long time to return it. After my father found out, he became concerned and drove me to retrieve my bike, even though I was not conserned. My friend initially didn’t know which bike I was referring to. I reminded him that it was the beach cruiser I let him use couple weeks ago and had made several attempts to retrieve. Apparently my friend was unaware that I had wanted my bike returned. I let my buddy know that, although I was not concerned,
my father and I shared ownership of the bike but it was kept in my home. My buddy seemed to understand my predicament but the encounter abruptly ended violently..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. is this bike okay for someone 5’1”? somewhere I read 700c wheels means 29 in, i can ride 26″ bike comfortably, but not 28″. Thanks.

If you are 5’1″, this may be too large of a bike for you but each user has a different preference/comfort level.Schwinn Discover Women’s Hybrid Bike (700C Wheels) model S5397 has an 18″ frame according to the manufacturer.700c wheels are different than a 29″ wheel. For the casual bike riders, most individuals use the size (diameter) of the wheels: 20″, 24″, 26″etc to make the selection of the bike they wish to purchase. Bikes measured this way have frames designed relative to the tire size, so the larger the tire, the larger the frame. Some bike manufacturers may use a simple overall bike measurement such as x-small, small, medium, large, x-large; the bike size is usually on a sticker somewhere on the frame on other brands. ( note:Only the custom bikes from Schwinn are sized xs, small, med, large or xl though and this is not a ‘custom bike’) The manufacturer may label the bikes Boy’s, Men’s, Girl’s, Women/Ladies however, they are not only meant for younger or older individuals. The rider will need to go by their height/inseam size. Keep in mind that for the 700c series road and hybrid bikes, the rim is larger in diameter so it will bring this frame higher up. These type of bikes(700c wheeled and hybrid) may be better suited for an individual 5′ 7″ and taller. Someone of a small stature may have a difficult time riding the bike comfortably.Riding a bicycle that is not correctly sized to the rider may result in the rider’s feet not being able to touch the ground and balance the bicycle, properly reach the handlebar for steering or braking, and loss of control when pedaling. This sizing below is just a general guideline for some Schwinn bikes. It is always best to be professionally measured to find the best fit/size if unsure.Bike Wheel Size Your Approx. 2. I am a senior wanting to ride for fitness, trips to the grocery store, around town carrying light camera gear for nature shots is the bike 4 me?

I am 70 and do exactly that.I bungie cord a plastic basket on the back and carry milk etc 4 miles one way from the grocery store. The 21 speeds are great because I ride into the wind and ride back in much higher gear. It came mostly assembled and needed no adjustment.Keep the tires at 60 PSI and it flies and will outrun a younger person with balloon tires.I have had it for 1 1/2 years and ride it everywhere. Do change the seat to a cloud 9 one for comfort. Get it you won’t regret it.

3. im a man only 5 2 in. will this bike be to tall to ride?

Though I don’t own this bike, in my opinion, this will not be a good fit fora 5′ 2″ man (I am of that height). You will need a small frame (15″ or lower)bike. Some700C bikes come in that small frame but would require some research. Probably you can ride this bike, but for safety reasons better to look for a small frame bike. The critical aspectis the top tube height. You should be able to straddle the bike without your crotch hitting the top tube. For a ladies bike, itshouldn’t be a problem as the top tube is shaped differently.

4. Can you sit straight up like a cruiser? How are the handle bars swept back?

No, you cannot sit straight up like on a cruiser bike. The handle bars can be adjusted, but they will not allow you to be positioned without bending over a bit. It can get tiring at a point but not so bad that you will have back pain. I just let go of one side of the handle bars and sit upright to stretch my back. I also changed the seat which makes the bend and ride bearable. You are sitting up and bending over slightly at the same time. It’s a good smooth riding bike. No problem shifting gears or braking.I really enjoy riding it. Hope this hepls everyone.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I am 5′ 6″, is this bike the right size for me? I’ve been told that 52 cm is the size I need.

I am also 5.6 and I’ve been riding for about 35 years. My first road bike was a 50cm Bianchi that I have to this day, the fit is perfect. I recently bought a new Bianchi VIa Nirone 7 which is also 50 cm.What you want to do is stand over the top tube with both feet flat on the ground, you should have a bit of clearance between the top tube and your crotch. You should not have the top tube pushing up into you in order to stay flat footed. That said, 56cm is way to large for you.

2. I see in the title it said “18-inch”, which is a x-small, so did something change? because I see in other questions it is 22 inch frame

It is NOT an 18 inch frame I do not know why Amazon sells it as that. The frame measures nearly 22 inches from the midpoint of the crank to the seat post insert. It is the equivalent of a 56 cm frame (i.e. Large), and best suited for riders 5’11” or taller.Hope this helps and best of luck (if you’re looking for entry-level in small check out the giordano libero 1.6).

3. the bike is assambled, ready for ride or I have to get to store?

Bike comes as a pre-assembled package, with some easy-to-do assembly steps to make it fully road-ready. Can very easily be done at home. No need to go to a store.

4. What size of tubes does this bike need?

Hi – tube size would be 700c 19-26. Hope this helps

This is for a person over 5’8″. they have a 16″ model too but it is listed as a women’s model Phocus 1600.
This bike rides like the wind and will last for many years with proper maintenance 🙂

7. Schwinn GTX Comfort Adult Hybrid Bike, Dual Sport Bicycle, Aluminum 16-20-Inch

Choosing the right bike can be tough. Road bikes are great for speed, but they can’t handle even the smallest patch of gravel. Cruiser bikes are fun and casual, but they aren’t designed for long and strenuous rides. Mountain bikes can handle gnarly trails but aren’t fast enough for a commute. Sounds like you need a hybrid, the perfect combination of road bike speed, cruiser comfort and mountain bike versatility.

The 700c Schwinn GTX has all of that and more, a true multi-sport hybrid that can handle all of your biking needs. Ride it around the neighborhood with the kids or commute to work with it in the mornings – The GTX is up for anything. It features 21-speed shifters and a rear derailleur for easy, precise gear changes, a suspension fork to smooth out the ride, and strong and light alloy rims for added stability.

The front and rear mechanical disc brakes provide extra stopping power and the multi-use tires are perfect for on-road riding or off-road adventures. On top of that, like all Schwinn bikes, the GTX comes with a limited lifetime warranty for as long as you own the bike. So what are you waiting for? Enjoy the ride on a Schwinn!

Schwinn GTX Comfort Adult Hybrid Bike, Dual Sport Bicycle, Aluminum 16-20-Inch Frame, Multiple Colors

  • Aluminum dual sport frame, suspension fork is designed for versatile riding. 700c wheel size fits riders 5’4” to 6’2” in height
  • 21-speed shifters with rear derailleur provides precise gear changes
  • Alloy V-brakes deliver sure stopping power
  • Alloy double wall rims offer lightweight durability
  • Multi-use tires provide plenty of grip on or off road
Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I’m 5.8″ tall. Is this bike ok for me?

Do your legs not fit right on the pedal? I have a 29″ inseam (which is short, I know.) I had a trex road bike for racing and is the same size as this bike. I fit that
bike like a glove so is it the legs causing problems ? be more specific

2. 5.3 inches tall what size bike

Not this bike. You need a small frame (15-16 inches) and smaller wheels.

3. What is the weight of the bike? Not the shipping weight though.

The bike itself is 32 pounds.

4. What height person is this bike for? it says 16″small frame size in description, but someone else mentioned it is 28″ so I am confused.

You’re right, bike jargon can be a bit confusing at first. The hybrid tire is 700c (metric) which converts roughly to 28″ in diameter. 16″ is the frame size (the measurement from the seat post to the bottom bracket). Another helpful measurement is the standover height (30″). You can view a photo image of this standover height by clicking on the last photo on left side of the bike. Hope this helps.

I read the Amazon reviews before I purchased the Schwinn GTX 2. Most complaints and negative comments seamed to be attributed to assembly or the result of improper assembly. If you are not very handy, you would probably do better by paying the additional for the expert assembly.

If you are handy and you feel confident in your basic tool skills (along with an ability and patience to follow assembly instructions…not just look at the pictures) then this project is very doable for you. Take your time assembling the bike…your safety depends on it. This bike was available at a local Big-Box store for slightly more money, but after seeing the lack of care and quality of the bikes thrown together by the store associates, I decided to do it myself. Total assembly time was approximately 45 minutes.

The bike was delivered in a box that was somewhat beat-up in transit. However, the bike itself was so well packed that there were no damage issues. Styrofoam packing and wrap, zip ties, plastic hub and rim protectors and bubble wrap kept everything well protected and unscratched.

The front fork is delivered in a reversed position. Pay close attention to instructional/descriptive stickers on the fork, cranks and pedals. Spin the fork around and tighten the two hex screws once it is properly aligned.

The handlebars are fairly straight-forward. If the cables appear to be tangled or crossed, try a different orientation of the bar. It is useful to know that the Right side of the handlebar controls rear breaks and rear derailleur (Right = Rear) and the left side of the handlebar controls front break and front derailleur (Left = Front).

I’ve seen comments regarding flat tires and broken chains. Fill the tires slowly, check the bead to insure the inner-tube is not pinched against the rim before you inflate to the proper psi listed on the side of the tire. Chains should last for several hundred miles with proper maintenance and care. Check for any snags or issues before your first ride. Make sure the chain is properly oiled (the factory installed chain may have a coating to protect against rust and not necessarily lubricated). Also, do some research on cross chaining…it may add years to your chain’s life.

The pedals need to be matched to the correct crank. Begin to thread by hand (Right pedal = clockwise and Left pedal = counter clockwise). Complete tightening with 15mm wrench. A mismatched pedal means stripped threads and pedals falling off.

No tuning of this bike was needed. Gears and breaks worked as they should.

I found it very helpful to watch the a Schwinn assembly video in conjunction with the instructions in the Schwinn owners manual.

Comfort: I gave the Schwinn GTX 2 four stars because of the limited ability to move the seat fore and aft. The position of the seat will not allow me to get the correct fit (for knees over the crank) so I will have to find another seat. I am upgrading from a mountain bike, so, in comparison, the GTX is an improvement in comfort.

Light weight: Again, I’m giving the GTX 2, five stars because it is lighter than a mountain bike. I’m not a pro competition rider so the weight of the bike (+or- 10 lbs) wasn’t that important to me.

Overall, the Schwinn GTX 2 is a nice bike for the price. Hope this helps..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I’m 5’11” Which size should I choose?

When determining frame size, we recommend that customers have an inseam length at least 1 or 2 inches above the frame size they are looking at to be sure that when you dismount, you are not caught up in the frame. If you are not sure which bike frame to choose, visit a local bike shop to have your inseam measured and stand over a couple of bikes to see what size fits your body best.

2. Is this bike fine with a rear rack?

This bike does NOT come with holes to attach a rear rack. It lacks the holes just below the seat post required for most racks. I’m having to figure something out with P clamps or other hardware.

3. Does it come with the tools?

Hi Kaylin, Thanks for your inquiry. The bike does not come with tools. The bike comes factory direct and will require assembly. We recommend taking the bike to a local shop for proper assembly and a safety check to ensure all parts are secure and working correctly. I hope this resolves your question. If I can be of further assistance please let me know!Best regards,ViVi

4. Is this a good starter bike for someone who is just getting into cycling?

I think it’s an awesome bike Obviously it’s not meant for competitions, but it’s light, has a great profile, and good, smooth compobents And it looks good!! Totally worth a lot more 200 dollars
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Rey de Reyes says: “For the price, this is THE BIKE! I’ve been riding and working on bikes since I was 16, when I was 18 I used to ride 80 miles in one day with no problems. It has been 25 years since my last bike! I’m 66 and decided to take up biking again but did not want to invest much. The bike arrived almost assembled, all I had to do was to install the handle bars the pedals the shifters and the wheels. No problems whatsoever, had it done in 2 hrs. Surprisingly the derailleurs needed minor adjustment to get it where
they make NO noise at any gear. Now they work exactly when you shift. The brakes also needed light adjustment . The wheel were completely balanced and no wobbles and none of the spokes needed any adjustment. The bike was a hefty 29.9 Lbs. I replaced the dreaded seat with a lovely Selles SMP TRK, also the pedals with pedals with lighter clip pedals and did not install some of the reflectors and useless items and got rid of some of the spacers for the handle bar vertical height, I got the bike down to 24.2 Lbs! Sweet!! Contrary to what I’ve read, the brakes work great, after minute adjustment they stop in a dime! After getting the new saddle I did my own; bike fitting; and it has been a dream to ride this bike. After having this bike for 6 weeks and putting 230 miles on it the only problem I had was realizing that I can no longer ride as long or as fast I did before. Other wise if you are budget conscious and a bit mechanically inclined you will have NO problems!

Update – 12/5/19 After 18 months with this bike the only problem I have is making time to ride it as much as I wish. (planing to shorten the handle bars and replacing the wheels to make it even lighter).

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I’m 5’10, 184lbs, any idea if this bike would be too small for me? heard someone here mention its more suitable for someone 5’6 below

I am 6’2″ and weight 191 lbs. I have no problem with this bike. The seat has at least 8″ of adjustment to accommodate any height issues. Love this bike.

2. What is the frame size for this bike? I am 5’2 and wondering if the height would be a problem or not.

This is a 55cm or 56cm frame sized bike! Traditional horizontal top tube – meant for someone at least 5′ 8″ up to possibly 5′ 11″ tall. 5′ 2″ tall? You NEED to go to a real bicycle shop & get one with a smaller frame size.

3. how much does this bike weigh?

It is around 30 lbs total weight. Which i guess is an absolute monster in the road biking world but for a starting bike it held up to a 58 mile race right out of the box.

4. How much does the actual bike weigh?

This bike weighs 27.2 lbs!
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

William D. says: “These reviews are separated by color but if your looking at the green one its cheaper than the. Blue one for the same bike. The bike shipped quickly and was packaged well. My gf bought the vilano shadow and neither had any damage and were very easy to put together out of the box(no bike backrounds). Like stated in another review the seat is a brick with some material around it but a 5 dollar buttpad helped alot. I took the bike on 3 14 mile rides with zero issues just slight handlebar Adjustments( im 5’6” and its perfect height) then
the real test. Martins tour of richmond 58 mile gran fondo, and it performed greatly, while the bike is heavy around 30 lbs total its a price you cant beat especially for a begginner, and with 14 speeds you will have practice woth a wide range. I definatly suggest this for casual riders like myself whos budget doesnt allow a 500$ upgrade every year.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I’m 5’2″ would this bike fit me?

Whether this bike would fit /work for you or not is somewhat of a matter of opinion and personal choice. The S4023D Ladies Wayfarer (Mint) hybrid bike has 700c wheels. They do not have a max weight limit, however, they field test those bicycles for up to 250 pounds. (Only the custom bikes from this manufacturer are sized xs, small, med, large or xl , and these are not custom bikes)The manufacturer may label the bikes Boy’s, Men’s, Girl’s, Women/Ladies however, they are not only meant for younger or older individuals. The rider will need to go by their height/inseam size. Keep in mind that for the 700c series road and hybrid bikes, the rim is larger in diameter so it will bring this frame higher up. These type of bikes (700c wheeled and hybrid) may be better suited for an individual 5′ 7″ and taller. Someone of a small stature may have a difficult time riding the bike comfortably. Each user may have a different personal preference though. Riding a bicycle that is not correctly sized to the rider may result in the rider’s feet not being able to touch the ground and balance the bicycle, properly reach the handlebar for steering or braking, and loss of control when pedaling. This sizing below is just a general guideline for some Schwinn and Mongoose bikes. It is always best to be professionally measured to find the best fit/size if unsure.Bike Wheel Size – Your Approx. 2. What does it mean by hybrid

Hybrid bicycles blend characteristics from more specialized road bikes, touring bikes and mountain bikes. The resulting “hybrid” is a general-purpose bike that can tolerate a wide range of riding conditions and applications. Hope this is helpful

Let me start by saying that this the ninth bicycle in my current stable and the least expensive by far; I have owned dozens of bikes over the years. Two of my current bikes cost over $3k. I have been a bike geek my entire life and worked as a professional bike mechanic in younger years. I feel as though I have a good perspective from which to judge bicycle quality. I was attracted to this bike’s apparent value and traditional styling, and I was not disappointed.
The bike is a steel frame, seven speed derailleur bicycle with an upright riding position. It has no-name components, except the Shimano derailleur and freewheel. Cost-saving parts include an Ashtabula (one piece cast steel) crank and chainring, a steel seatpost and seat clamp, and steel handlebars. The generic quill stem, rims, hubs, linear-pull brakes, and brake levers are aluminum alloy. The Shimano derailleur appears to be stamped steel, though I haven’t confirmed for sure. The included rack is also chromed steel. The sturdy fenders appear to be brushed aluminum with steel brackets. Even with these heavy steel components, the bike does not feel particularly heavy. The steel frame is cleanly welded, with standard diameter tubing on all except a slightly oversized downtube. It has a nice looking paint job and even has some subtle pinstriping and lettering on the top of the top tube. The front wheel has a quick release, while the rear hub is bolt-on.
Although they call this a hybrid bicycle, to me it seems to be a classic English touring bike, right down to the coil spring seat and swept-back handlebars. The seven speed gearing covers a moderate range, adequate for flat to moderately hilly terrain. Don’t expect mountain bike gearing. The freewheel is 14-28 teeth, not a super-wide range but adequate for casual cycling on paved roads or firmly packed trails. I didn’t count the chainring teeth. The only nod to hybrid elements is a slightly sloping top tube which belies the frame’s more modern origins. Otherwise the layout and ride is very much like English touring bikes of the 1960’s and 1970’s (think black Raleigh three speed, but with some alloy updates).
The bike was easily assembled, but there were a few adjustments needed that might befuddle or elude someone without experience. The bottom bracket bearings were way too tight, the headset was slightly loose, the front wheel need some minor truing, and the linear-pull brakes needed some typical adjustments – centering, adjusting brake pad alignment, cable tension. In contrast, the gearing and hubs on my unit needed no adjustments out of the box. If you do not have experience assembling bicycles, I recommend paying a professional to assemble the bike for it to reach its full potential. The brakes feel mushy compared to modern high quality hydraulic disc brakes, but once properly adjusted they had no difficulty locking up the rear wheel or quickly stopping the bike. In this price range I think the brakes are above average. The grip-shift, seven-speed gearing was crisp and quiet.
Once assembled, the bike has a solid, smooth, quiet ride, if somewhat “vintage” in its feel. The riding position is very upright with just some very slight forward lean. There is not a lot of space between the seat and the backswept handlebars, which is fine if you are not expecting a racing position. The bike seems to encourage taking one’s time and looking around to enjoy the ride. It feels efficient, and secure though not what I would call “nimble.” I think this would make a great bike for a college campus, paved trails, and urban commuting for short to moderate distances. That said, I have seen people ride all kinds of bikes on all kinds of surfaces and terrain.
I am 6′ 0″ tall and weigh 195 pounds. The bike was very comfortable for me, and I have the bike in about the middle of its height adjustment range. I estimate the bike would be suitable for people around 5’9″ to 6′ 2″ with adjustments to the stem and seat height. Stored with reasonable protection from the weather, and basic regular maintenance (adjustment, air in the tires, regular lubing the chain and pivot points), this bike should last many, many years..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Will this bike fit a 6ft 4in man?

yes.i’m 6’2″.& seat is not all the way up

2. Is there a front and rear shock upgrade that you would recommend?

I have the Schwinn Ember (Sam’s club version, same bike) I upgraded the rear shock to an Exa 382 coil with lock out 165mm eye to eye (750lb spring) and upgraded the front fork to a Rockshox 30 tk silver with a straight steered tube (again a coil). It made a big difference, no more pogo effect and a much improved ride.

3. Are the disk brakes hydraulic disk brakes?

No, they are mechanical disk brakes

4. is this bike 7 or 8 speed

This is a 24-speed bike. Thanks, we’re working on updating this information.

It went together very easily, but did need rerouting of the cables which could not be completely untangled as well as some minor tuning. I also replaced the skinny rock hard seat with a super comfortable TONBUX seat that almost matches the color perfectly (best $20 I ever spent!). It rides like a dream on the rough dirt and rocky mountain roads near my house, the full suspension and big 29″ tires really soak in the bumps, very smooth. I am very pleased with the overall performance of the bike so far, it shifts very quickly up and down and the disk brakes are strong. I am 5’9″ tall / 185 lbs. and the bike has plenty of seat adjustment left, I would say it will handle up to a 6’2″ rider, but not much shorter than 5’8″ comfortably. I would highly recommend this bike to anyone that is NOT interested in hard core wide open down hill mountain trail riding. I am sure the bike can handle any trail at controlled speeds, but sustained high speed down hill mountain trail riding needs more bike than this, i.e. hydraulic brakes & better suspension, or in other words spending at least double or triple what this bike cost. At under $400 dollars it is a great bike.
UPDATE: After several long rides on very rocky mountain roads and trails I just had to change my rating from 4 to 5 stars. This bike is that nice, and it didn’t seem fair to down grade the rating due to slow poor FedEx service.
18 MONTH FOLLOW-UP:
Loving this well made Schwinn! Have many miles of very hard riding on it now and it is holding up well. Zero issues and still functioning perfectly. There is a slight amount of seepage at the front forks but that is normal. I have just about worn out the tires but that is after a lot of miles, most of which were ridden on rough rocky roads with zero flats. Overall this bike is a winner. Well worth the current price..

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

ZW says: “Bike was easy to assemble, just had to put the tires on it. Gears change easily, very smooth pedaling. Seat is comfortable as bike seats go. Bought a speedometer that wont work because the wheels don’t have spokes for the sensor to latch to. Doesn’t have quick release wheels which, from what I have read, is a good thing since the bike has disc brakes. Glad I got it when I did since it looks like it may be a while, if ever, for this bike to show up again.
