Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I have a dedicated 20amp circuit and the breaker trips every time the motor stops and restarts.. How can i fix that?

I had the same issue, I had to upgrade to a dedicated 30 amp circuit breaker. That fixed the problem.

2. Is this 110v or 220. Both are listed in various places.

The dust collector is 110 volt.

3. What are the dimensions of this machine. Information shown doesn’t seem quite right.

The product dimensions are: 27-1/2″ X 44″ X 70″. The footprint is 32-1/2″ X 24″.

4. What is the rated noise level in decibels for this unit when operating

The dust collector has a decibel rating of 78.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Can you use a standard size furnace filter? If so what size?

Shawn, the filter is 9 1/2 tall by 16 1/2 wide by 2 in thick.its a special air filtration filter. If you can find a furnace filter that size.you could use it, or buy the filter material and cut out your own.there is 2 cloth bag filters behind this filter.I have just been using a vacuum on my filter.Buy the Shop Fox , nicedoes a decent joy.

2. Can i use this in my garage? It gets very hot during the summer? Will heat effect it at all?

You sure can! And no, heat will not effect it. There is a pretty stage filter that looks like your furnace filter and a sock filter inside. I would purchase extra furnace style filters. Should be available for same model on Amazon.

3. Does this unit come ready to use out of the box, or must I purchase the two filters that the unit requires?

The filters come in the box

4. Will this unit run safely on a 12 Amp circuit? The manual specs say to use a 15-amp, but i do not have one.

where do i start.. houses now have wiring for 15 amp circuits and larger not sure why you have 12,,,but ,,, if the unit draws less than 12 amps on highest settings (check your manual)then your fine if nothing else is on that circuit drawing power. If your house wiring is 12 gauge its rated for 15 amps and should be protected by 15 amp breaker . If the unit pulls more amps then the breaker then.. the breaker will trip .

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Clay R Burton says: “I’ve had this unit for a short time and I can tell that it is filtering the air. As the instructions state how you place this unit is important to getting the most effective use from it. This unit is not designed to be the only means of dust filtration in the shop. It is a secondary means to a dust collection system. Since my dust collection means currently is an inefficient shop vacuum system dust is a nightmare so I use a GVS SPR457 Elipse P100 Half Mask Respirator purchased here on Amazon to filter dust. The remote control system
on this unit leaves a lot to be desired. The remote needs to be fairly close to and facing the control panel to operate the unit. Overall I am pleased with this unit and consider it money well spent.
Update, now that I’ve been using this unit for a while now I can definitely tell a difference with dust in my shop. This unit does work and I’ve already had to clean the filter..

It looks like steel to me.

2. The description on amazon says the dust collector delivers 550 cfm of suction, but the motor says 300 cfm. which is the correct cfm?

Sean Buck says: “This is my first dust collector, and I am very happy with it. I am using this exclusively for my mini lathe, and it works great. I was in a hurry to set this up, so I didn’t cut the hose down to a reasonable length. I’ve got the supplied 10 foot hose coming off the collector, then the cyclone separator, then another 10 foot hose connecting to the lathe collection hood. Given all of that, the suction is surprising and it catches most all of the shavings coming off the lathe. That seems pretty impressive given that the 4″ hose opening is 9″ away from the spindle center. I can tell within a few seconds of turning if I forgot to turn on the dust collector, as most of the shavings immediately end up all over the place when I forget. I’ve attached a video showing the degree of suction with handfuls of sawdust to simulate the collection during lathe turning. I also placed a dollar bill next to the collector to better illustrate the size of this collector, since this ended up being a little bigger than I pictured in my head, especially once the bag is fully inflated. I’ll probably wall mount this with the attached bracket to open up some floor space.

From a noise perspective, this is a little quieter than my vacuum cleaner, and much quieter than any shop-vac I’ve ever used. I cannot hear it from the second floor unless I’m directly above my workshop. I would definitely recommend this dust collector!.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. what is the height when bags are inflated?

Dear John white,
Thank you for your question. The height of the Shop Fox W1687 Dust Collector with bags inflated is 78-inches. If you have additional questions please contact our SHOP FOX Technical Service Team at 800-840-8420 ext. 2 or email techsupport@woodstockint.com.

2. What is the footprint for this DC? Thanks

34″ x 56″

3. How do you know if you are buying the right size machine? I want to run more than 4 pieces of machinery, is there a formula?

The key question is: how many machines do you intend to run at the same time? You can easily run a large machine, and even a second at the same time depending on the resistance inherent in the run (i.e. length, elbows, smooth vs rough walls, diameter or duct, etc) with a machine this size.Quick heads up, you’ll want to run 6″-7″ duct on this machine or you’re sacrificing the CFM capability right out of the gate.4 inch is completely inadequate for optimal fine dust collection at the source.I recommend reading up on Bill Pentz’s website.

4. How many galloms of sawdust does this hold? Do you purchase throw away bags for liners inside to ketch the dust?

I am enjoying the new collector more each day!I plan however to make part of my 4″ lines- 2 stage dropping into a 55 gallon barrel first.Just planing some walnut I have filled one bag 3 times and the other once.I am going to adjust the baffle to make a more even fill.I admit that since running it with the 3 table saws, 2 jointers, 2 planners, a radial arm saw and a large drum sander, I am not all plugged up and going to the doctor, only some mild dust in my nose from equipment not hooked up.I have been able to keep 2 of the 4 – 4″ lines open at once with only specific machine valves opened. It is amazing to have less to cleanup. Thanks for the information.

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Hillary M. says: “Despite some other reviews I set this up in about 30 minutes and was horrified with the amount of suction, not for a weekend warrior or hobbyist, this is a real machine. I have multiple dust collectors and this is by far the best bang for the buck considering how quiet for the amount of suction regardless of what your expectation is. Literally can’t hear the dust collector if there’s a shop vac nearby running. I use it for my 4 Shop Fox molders and another for 7 Shop Fox shapers without a single issue.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I would prefer to simply throw out a bag full of dust and replace it with a new one. Is there a standard size plastic bag that can be purchased

Here are Big Horn 14″ bags that will fit the W1727http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003NE5A8M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ! The Big Horn bags are 2″ longer, 1″ less diameter (still fits the 1727) and a little thinner mil spec (like regular visqueen vsHD visqueen) .At less than $2 a bag, I’d certainly consider these “throw-a-ways”!

2. Can I use a triac based motor speed controller to dial down the vacuum? Sometimes I don’t need a lot of suction but I need it for hours and hours.

Rockler sells a quick connect handle for a 4″ and 2 1/2″ attachment that allows you to open the port partially and reduce the amount of suctionI would look into that first, before going to the speed controller option sir..also, it only costs about $14

3. Will this work good if I’m grinding steel on a belt grinder?

the dust collector is not made to work with metal grinding.

4. how loud is it?

Not as loud as my shop vac!
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Chip Clark says: “I recently upgraded my shop with this Shop Fox dust collector. I had my reservations about it because it seemed small and certainly less costly than the more popular systems. But the reviews were good so I took a chance and am very glad I did. My shop is about 400 sq. ft., not huge but not dinky either. I used a combination of 4″ PVC sewer pipe with 4″ and 2 1/2” Powertec hoses to 5 tool stations, each with a blast gate. With the Shop Fox in the middle of the shop the furthest station is a planer, about
18′ away. This thing works like a charm! I strongly suggest a dedicated circuit for this. Even on the same circuit with LED lighting it was tripping the breaker. I have not grounded the ducting, but I have noticed that even running it for short periods does build up some static so I may ground it at some point just for peace of mind. Compared to the loudness of a Rigid Shop Vac, the Shop Fox is probably about 30% quieter. If you have a small/medium sized shop I don’t think you will go wrong with the Shop Fox..

10. Shop Fox W1826 Wall Dust Collector, 2.5 Micron Filtration

Style:2.5 Micron Filter Bag This wall mounted Dust Collector is designed to capture dust right at the source, eliminating the reduced efficiency of a duct system. With 537 CFM capacity, it will handle just about any hungry woodworking machine, and with no complicated duct system, static pressure loss is minimal. A simple wall mounted bracket and locking screw system also ensures you’ll be safely up and running in no time!

Shop Fox W1826 Wall Dust Collector, 2.5 Micron Filtration

  • 1-horsepower motor, 120 or 240V, prewired at 120V, 7 amp at 110V, 3.5 amp at 240V
  • Features window to gauge how much dust is in bag and bottom zipper for easy dust disposal
  • Single 4-inch intake hole
  • 2.5 Micron bag has 2 cubic feet capacity
  • 44-inch height with bag inflated
Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. could this be hooked up to a cyclone for better performance?

Yes, even a basic homemade chip separator would improve performance.

2. Is a cyclone-type separator recommended with this unit, or is it not needed?

An additional cyclone is not needed. Adding one will however reduce the frequency at which you have to empty the bag.

3. Does the W1826 come with the cannister filter? The pictures for this item show it both with and without it. The description is equally vague.

Comes with filter bag only with zipper on bottom of bag. Works great for me. I don’t remove bag, just unzip and dump into plastic trash bag. I’ve found the dust collector to work very well with my sawstop.

4. Is the impeller plastic or metal

Installed and in use for two weeks, I am very satisfied with this purchase. It has made a huge difference in the cleanliness of my shop compared to my old “adapt Shop Vac to my power tools” method.

The suction is just fine – Not sure what other folks were trying to suck up that caused them to complain, It is after all a DUST collector (does well with chips and shavings too), not a “shop vac”.

MUCH quieter than my shop vac as well which is a huge thing when one has it running for extended periods.

UPDATE: Both my thickness planer and my jointer cause the intake to clog with shavings and render the collector ineffective. This is because there is a safety cage at the inlet that traps larger shavings causing the clog. The cage appears to be there primarily to keep you from putting your hand into the impeller while the machine is running, and secondarily to prevent very large objects from entering and damaging the impeller. Both situations are undesirable and easily preventable.

If you never run the collector without a hose attached and never try to use it as anything other than a dust collector attached to a machine (i.e. don’t use it as a “shop vac”), you can safely work around the problem (although I’m sure the mfr would not recommend this).

The cage is easily snipped away with tin snips. I’ve never had a problem with it sucking in as many shavings at as high a rate as my machines have been able to produce since doing this.

Just remember to NEVER run the collector without a hose attached and NEVER use it for anything other than its designed purpose – collecting dust and shavings from saws, planers, jointers and other machines..

12. Shop Fox W1666 2 HP 1550 CFM Dust Collector

Style:2 HP, 1,550 CFM This Shop Fox Dust Collector features a 2 HP motor and an extra Heavy-Duty 12-inch impeller that moves 1,550 cubic feet of air every minute. When it comes to performance and value, this one is hard to beat.

Shop Fox W1666 2 HP 1550 CFM Dust Collector

  • Air suction capacity: approximately 1,550 CFM
  • Static pressure: 12.3-Inch
  • Standard bag filtration: 2.5 Micron
  • Motor amplifier draw: 220-Volt to 12A
  • Bag volume: 5.4 cubic-Feet
Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Product came looking like it was dropped out of an airplane. Need the collector this week but very un pleases with how it came. Shield was damaged

I had a problem with the piece that goes between the filter bag and the plastic collection bag, but it was promptly replaced by the manufacturer

2. Is there a way to get a replacement motor for the shop fox w1666 2 hp 1550 cfm dust collector?

You could go online and find a replacement motor of any type that’s wired 220v/2hp, the impeller mounts directly, however, I would put that money towards a better collector given the opportunity. I would recommend a cyclone.

3. What is the diameter of the inlet cover? Just of the inlet cover, please.

J. D. the inlet to the fan is just under 6″ to allow the 6x4x4 “Y” adapter to fit. The adapter has two 4″ outlets and one comes with a removable cover to facilitate the use of a single 4″ inlet. I do not have the exact outside diameter but can measure it if necessary. just send a reply and I will go to my shop and get the measurement for you. You won’t go wrong with this system. The manufacturers warranty (2 years) is great, and they do stand behind their product. This machine SUCKS!

4. Can I replace the bag with a sub micron unit?

I am not sure about the sub micron filter. I would contact shop fox or look at Grizzly Machinery to see if they make a retrofit filter.
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Steve says: “I purchased this to replace a Shop Fox 1hp unit that I used for a couple of years. The picture shows how I put the unit together, which isn’t exactly standard. I bought a 0.5 micron pleated cleanable filter from Wynn Environmental instead of the 2.5 micron bag that came with the unit, and put a stage before that using a Dust Deputy and a sturdy container available on Amazon. I used the wheels that came with the unit, but did not use the bag or the base. Although I’ve dumped the container a couple of times, the bag has nothing
more than maybe 1/4 cup of fine dust. The cost with all the bits and pieces came to about $1,000. My only complaint is that it’s quite a bit louder than the 1hp unit, but tolerable..

Rikon’s model 60-105 1HP Portable Dust Collector is a convenient size and can be used for many small shop operations. This unit gives the shop owner the versatility to mount the unit on the wall or use the built-in casters and handle to easily move it wherever it needs to go in the shop. The single 4″ dust port draws 660 CFM, which is more than enough suction for single machine operation on the big chip makers like a jointer or planer.

An adjustable pipe extension with chip collecting funnel allows the suction end to be positioned high for use with lathes, drill presses, workbenches, etc. Includes: 1HP Portable Dust Collector, 2-Micron Cloth Filter Bag, 9′ x 4″ Hose, Adjustable Pipe, Funnel Attachment System (9-1/4″ x 5″), Wall Mounting Bracket and Mounting Hardware.Features: Great for small shops Versatile 2-Micron cloth bag

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. would this dust collector be able to handle a 6×89 edge sander?

Yes. I have mine connected to my 8″ Powermatic with 10′ of 4″ hose and it keeps up 99% of the time. There was one situation where the input port clogged from too many chips but that just happenef one time.

2. Can this model handle the dust created by remodeling a kitchen and tearing out the wood lath/plaster?

This dust collector like most is designed to pick dust generated close to its intake. In my shop I also have an air purifier mounted to the ceiling. Frankly I believe a massive demo will require face masks and aiwinf the dust collector to continue runnig for more than 30 minutes after demo stops ro clean air.

3. Would this be good to use as I carve and it sucks up the wood before going all over the ? Is it noisy?

This is a highly effective dust collector so yes I believe you will find it effective. Unfortunately no dust collector gets 100%.

Noisy, yes I have four dust collectors in my shop. None are quiet if doing their job.

4. Can the direction facing of the funnel be changed or is it fixed as shown in the picture? Thank you.

The intake funnel can be faced 360 degrees or moved to another mount. The hose can be connected directly to a machine with a 4″ dust port

1. Is it an induction motor?

Yes

2. Does the dust and shavings go in the same bag?

Yes

3. If i buy this 4″ outlet and connect it a 2.5″ hose, through the appropriate adapter, what happens to the cfm?

Contractions always add friction pressure loss to the system, but it should be negligible for a small shop. If you’re going far with a main line, it’s best to stay at 4 inch and then branch off with 2.5.

4. What is the db rating for it?

Right next to it my SPL meter reads about 90-95 dBA. It’s a lower pitch hum though, a bit quieter than my shop vac.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Will the RF remote work through an interior wall?

Yes, I have used mine when it was on another floor.

2. What is the small hose for?

Keeps the reusable canister bag from getting sucked up. Most newer cyclones have this now.. great cyclone for small professional shop, cuts my dust next to nothing compared with my old bagger.

3. What are the assembled dimensions?

70.5″ total height. The three legs for a triangle,32″ each side of tri.The filter canister sticks out 18″ from one side of that triangle. The footprint shape is odd, but if it had to go in a closet let’s pretend, it would fit in a 34″ by 42″ square. If your venting out, without the filter, the footprint is that triangle.. Gotta say I love this for what I paid compared to what I see it there!!! Brian. @desertwoodworking on Instagram.

4. What is the FLA for both 120v and 220v setups?

Dear Jamie D,
