Best sleeping bags below zero Reviews and Buying Guide – Top 10

Below we have reviewed the best sleeping bags below zero. From these products you can choose the product of your choice if you want.

1. ALPS OutdoorZ Redwood -25 Degree Flannel Sleeping Bag, Tan, 38 –

The Redwood is a “heavy duty” oversized rectangle bag. The Redwood series use Techloft Insulation. Techloft Insulation consists of multi-hole staple-length micro-denier fibers that have a siliconized finish for maximum insulation, loft, and compactness. The TechLoft insulation will keep you warm and toasty on those colder nights when you’d prefer to have more “wiggle room” than you get with your mummy bag. It uses 2-layer offset construction to eliminate cold spots.

For transporting, we include 3 webbing straps with quick release buckles that keep your “rolled-up bag” secure. Since you have 2 choices in the amount of fill, you’ll be able to pick the bag that is just right for your needs.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. does the lining inside detach and bunch up in lumps after washing? my current synthetic (upside: water proof) bag is a nightmare after having been washed. it is paper thin in most parts, and lumpy in others–completely useless. the last time I slept on it I was shivering and miserable from the lack of protection. : ( I…

I believe since this bag is a heavier canvas and cotton inside it should hold up extremely well. I love mine and you shouldn’t have to wash this one often. When you do have to wash it; you will want to go old school and air dry it, not machine dry, to avoid the bad lumping of the insulation. Good Luck and hope this helps.

2. is this bag right zip or left zip?

My son uses this bag. He puts the zipper on the right side when he lies on his back in it. But it is the same on both sides so you can flip it over and use it as a left zip also. I hope this helps

3. Is this bag rated at minus 25 degrees or at 25 degrees?

Hello, this bag is rated -25 degrees.

4. When you have the option of right or left zipper on a sleeping bag what does that mean?

If you connect them & lay them on their opposite sides & have the zipper in the middle, which sucks because for one to get out the other is bothered & gets coldor you can do it right & just open them both up and zip them together. If you do it that way, you have one on bottom & one on top. You only need a left & right zipper if the bottom doesn’t open, which this does & you have a mummy like top to wrap around your head, which this doesn’t. Then you have zipper on both sides & it works much better!

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Becky Blanton says: “When my power went out for three days last year (Dec 2018) and I froze my butt off (single-digit numbers outside) I vowed “never again” and bought this bag. I’m so glad I did. I’ve had it in my van, taken it camping to test it out in cold temps, and have been sweated out of the bag at 18 degrees. I have no doubt it will be my cave if the power goes out again this year. It’s NOT something you can take backpacking. It comes compressed and once you release those straps this sucker is BIG. Rolled up it
is 18 inches high. It’s durable as hell. This is the LAST sleeping bag I will ever have to buy (I’m 64 years old) unless my cats pee on it, or aliens steal it, or something insane happens to it – fire, etc. but it will NEVER wear out in my lifetime – even if I live to be 100. If I do live to be 100 it’s the one thing I will insist on taking to the nursing home with me.

The inside is flannel – the good, thick kind, not the cheap stuff. It’s soft, warm, cozy, great color that goes with everything. Think “hunting lodge,” or “hunting camp” and this is what comes to mind. I can’t imagine crawling into a better bag after a long, cold day hunting. Hunters typically DO have ATV’s that can haul stuff this size to camp – but don’t expect to strap it onto a backpack. I have converted a van into a camper, no heat yet, and this is awesome. I leave the heat running while I get ready for bed, turn off the van, crawl into this bag and I’m toasty and drifting off to sleep in minutes. It’s roomy too. I’m 5’3″, 165 pounds – (don’t judge me. I’ve lost 100+ pounds and kept it off for 3 years) and I do NOT feel restricted in any way. Easy to move around inside. A much taller, heavier person would be quite comfortable inside it too.

I just have this photo of the bag on a shelf in my office. I wasn’t thinking about writing a review until Amazon asked me to…and NO WAY I’m taking it down to shoot a photo…but trust me, it’s amazing. SO Happy I bought it. I’d buy it again. I’d buy it for a friend, I’d buy it for a homeless person who lived in a tent….seriously. This is the real deal – a great bag that does what it says – keeps you warm in COLD weather. Most bags will keep you warm at 10 degrees above their rating – like a 20-degree F bag will keep you warm at 30 degrees F, but NOT at 20F. I truly believe this bag, if properly situated on a closed foam pad, out of the wind, dry, etc. would keep me warm at -20F. I don’t want to test it in those temps of course, but yes, it will keep most of you considering it toasty and comfy I’m sure.

If I were in Alaska, or MN, or someplace where winter and cold temps REALLY SUCK, I’d pair it with a bivvy bag or some sort of “outer” bag if temps were predicted to hit -20F or lower, but I’m guessing that most readers are like me – van dwelling, car camping, in a lodge or other situation where you don’t really need to be a survivalist. If you ARE a survivalist, you’ll still love this bag for its durability, warmth, comfort, etc. When the zombie apocalypse hits, this is what you want to be sleeping in…assuming you can sleep during a zombie apocalypse..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Is this bag rated for -30 degrees?

Its rated for that but i would say not good for that without a full outfit of highend artic clothing and something to get you off the ground like a cot, i got this bag for Christmas when i was 17 andhave had this bag for about 7 years now (wow time flies) i have used it upwards of 400 times in mild to extreme winter temps.for about a year while i lived alone i used it indoorsand left my heat off at night to save money, average night in the winter the temp in the house would stay between 25-45 degrees. this is also my primary bag for winter camping, the coldest i ever used it in was last year during a trip with a few friends, 0 degree night with a wind chill of -8 and six inches of snow on the ground. i would not repeat this without a cot, i used a roll up mat on that trip and slept about 4 feet from the fire on the ground, i survived without frost bite but was cold as heck, i got up in the middle of the night and doubled up my socks and put a hoodie on under my coat.for most of my other average camping trips the temps ranged from 13-40 degrees and the bag has done great.

2. Would you choose 0 vs -30 for 3 season camping in Colorado mountians? Worried -30 might be too hot during summer months, I could always add a blanket

I think the -30 would still be my choice we have 90F days and 30F nights during archery season in Oregon.
Is the sleeping bag sometimes warm when going to bed yes but iI do not like additional blankets. Hope this helped.

3. I’m 6 foot 2 about 200 pounds and planning to go to Alaska. Would I fit in the sleeping bag?

Yes for sure. this sleeping bag is like 7’6 inches long. I am about 6’2 and 220 myself. It’s huge. A much larger man than me could fit in this bag. Its amazingly warm and comfortable. The only downside is its a real monster to lug around. Its definitely for car campers, not hikers!

4. can you zip two together?

Gaylen, you might be able to zip them together but one would be upside down. The zipper ends about 8 inches from the bottom so it would loop.I measured the box in which it arrived today and it measures 18X18X22.I think it would take considerable effort to get in back into the original box.It took several minutes just to get it rezipped after I checked to see if 2 zipped together. It is very big and heavy. The material does not compress well.Save your money and buy bags designed to fit together.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. How do you get the sleeping bag back into the stuff sack? I bought is and we can’t get it back in.

Most if not all better quality sleeping bags I’ve bought came with a stuff sack and a storage bag. The storage bag is much bigger and breathes to help preserve loft. (An oversized cotton pillow case would work)
As others have said, a stuff sack is for stuffing. Stick the foot in and start stuffing. Sometimes it’s a bit of a challenge. I think manufactures tend to provide undersized bags so they can claim they pack down smaller.

BTW, this would not make a good backpacking bag. It’s heavy and bulky. It would be fine for car camping though. Or for short winter backpack trips if you’re on a really tight budget.

2. Can you wash it on washing machine?

Technically yes. A standard wash may cause the internal insulating fill material to clump together during the spin cycle. This will cause the bag to be uncomfortable and loss it’s ability to properly keep you warm. I’ve ruined sleeping bags this way years ago as a kid.

My front loading washer machine was a “hand washing” setting selection with the option to turn the spin cycle off. I wash the bag twice (once with the soap reservoir about one-third full of HE Laundry Soap and a second hand wash cycle with just water to ensure the sleeping bag is properly rinsed. Use cold water on both washing cycles.

Finally, let the bag drip dry on a drying line outdoors or indoors in your laundry room or garage. Make sure to turn the bag inside out after 8 to 12 hours of drying so it can finish drying properly. This washing/drying method keeps my sleeping bags from being ruined. Use a quad size washing machine at your local laundry mat to wash your sleeping bag(s) if your current washing machine is too small to handle this sleeping bag. Air dry on line at home. A tower fan pointed at the sleeping bag while it’s on the drying line will help the bag dry much faster.

Sleeping bag liners are a great way to help it stay clean. They are sold in cotton, satin, silk and various other materials. I find the silk bags are extremely comfortable. The sporting goods section at your local Walmart should sell cotton sleeping bag liners next to the sleeping bag section.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Jacob

3. I need to know the weight of the sleeping bag please

It’s brutally heavy. If you’re asking about weight, this is NOT the bag you want.

4. how small does it compress down to?

When you get it new it is about 20×12 but I put it in a compression bag and got it down to around 12×12 . I t wasn’t easy getting it that small I had to put my knee on it to smash it and really pull on the straps. It is a little heavy for hiking but it has kept me very warm into the mid teens in a two person hiking tent with a klymit insulated static v sleeping pad under me. I f you can carry the extra weight it is a decent alternative to a more expensive down bag.

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Henry W Dwyer says: “Purchased this for elk hunting in the winter. Lowest the temps have gotten is in the 20’s and one night it was snowing, but I stayed perfectly warm in a tent with this sleeping bag. I’m 5’9, 200, and there is plenty of room inside it for me. I don’t feel cramped and my feet do not touch the end. The bag fits snug around my shoulders (but not uncomfortable tight) which helps keep in warm air throughout the night. On a few occasions, I’ve had to unzip the bag during the night to let cool air in. My only complaint,
and it’s not enough to drop a star, but the carrying bag this comes in is very small. It sometimes takes 2 people to put this sleeping bag back into the carrying case.

*** Update ***

After using this bag a few more times for camping, I’ve figured out how to properly roll it up so it goes into the carrying bag more easily. Start at the top of the bag and fold it in half length ways. 3/4 down the bag where it tapers to a smaller size, leave that part unfolded. As you roll the bag up, the small end should be the same width as the top half when its folded. This will reduce the thickness of the bag when rolled up, and it will go into the carrying bag much easier.

At first, I would fold the bag in half lengthways, all the way down, then roll it up. This was making it too bulky to fit properly in the bag and would take 2 people to put it in. Now, I can roll it up and have it back in the bag in about a minute.

I’ve attached some pictures that show the dimensions of the sleeping bag rolled up in the carrying bag. This may be helpful for anyone that is planning on using this bag for backpacking, but not sure if it will be too bulky. Also, so you can see how the size of this bag compares to a larger sleeping bag, I took a picture of it laying on top of a Teton XXL sleeping bag.

Dimensions:
– Length from end to face opening: 73″
– Width at the shoulders: 30″.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. re the regular length bag, how wide is it when zipped closed? The listed description says 60. I don’t want to guess that means 30 zipped.

It means 30 zipped. If you are as thin as a sheet of paper, you’ll be fine. And there is only room for one of your feet in the bottom of the bag

2. Can you zip this bag together with another bag?

No. I don’t believe that is possible. I have not tried to do that, but the bottom of the bag does not unzip, so your feet are enclosed in the bag. I think this prevents connecting to another bag comfortably.

3. Que producto se envia a mendoza argentina ?

No se habla Espanol. Comprimiso mi amigo

4. 100% cotton sleeping bag

Absolutely NOT! 100% synthetic materials. Very tight in the shoulders, and the foot box is only large enough for one of your feet.

4. This page clearly states the bags are machine washable and dryable but the packaging on the actual item says to hand wash and hang dry. Which is it?

Hello
We thank you for your question, and now we will answer your questions about whether it is machine washable. Our sleeping bags are machine washable, so you can use the washing machine to wash them safely. However, our sleeping bags cannot be dump dried andtumble dried after wash them, because cotton and cotton may be separated from each other, which will cause the warming effect of the sleeping bag to deteriorate. So, we recommend that you line drying them best. At the same time, any sleeping bag selling by other sellers also cannot be dump dried andtumble dried, but needs to be line drying, and we appreciate your understanding.
At the same time, we have the best service system, please feel free to contact us for any problems, we will give you satisfied solutions within 24 hours.

Jiajun Luo says: “Great bag for wet and damp environments. Best one in my past 7-year camping experience. I’ve taken this out a few times and it works like a champ! I even got toasty on a few 15° overnight trips. It performs as expected and the synthetic material dries fast. I LOVED the color and how compact it could get, it fit in the bottom of my 65L trekking bag no problem. I personally prefer this to a super expensive down bag that gets ruined by snow/condensation. This sleeping bag is like a hidden gem for backpackers who don’t want to shell out

What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Mark S.Top Contributor: Camping says: “Finally a sleeping bag warm enough for colder temperatures, small enough to fit my backpack and big enough for and average American man. Nice material, soft, warm and enough room to move around in and get comfortable. It has a zipper plow so as not to catch the material when zipping in for the night and it’s plenty long and wide enough, I can zip it up from the inside. It has ties on the end to hold it in place after you roll it up and that really helps with putting it back into it’s compression sack. It’s really light
too, only a couple of pounds, so that’s another plus if you’re hiking. The top also has drawstrings so you can cinch it up around your head to keep out the cold. Also the zipper at the bottom overlaps another zipper to keep the cold out and your feet warm Overall I’m really happy with this sleeping bag, only time will tell how well it holds up, but seems to be of really good quality..
