Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth?

I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won’t take it off provided the wood is properly prepared.

2. I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what’s the coverage with using a sprayer?

I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from
Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster.

3. How long can the product be stored once the container is opened?

We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago.
When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer .

4. What is the warranty on this?

I don’t believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sunneeds to have it applied again.
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Ron G says: “I have used several different stain/sealers over the years, and this is the best I’ve used so far. My comparison is to Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck and Thompson’s stain – both are much more expensive. Ready Seal went on easily and dried very evenly with no runs, heavy or thin spots to show. Now, granted, a lot of that has to do with application, but I used a cheap airless sprayer from Harbor Freight (also a great product for the money) and it did great. I would think a cheap garden sprayer would do just as well, although it would take longer and
you’d have to carry the tank around. I HIGHLY recommend using a airless sprayer with a long hose.

This stain is just a little thicker than water, so you’ll want to use a small spray tip; I used a 0.15 and it worked fine, although there was some aerosolization. I recommend an old ball cap, a dust mask, nitrile gloves and some safety glasses – but that’s just good protection for any home painting job. It was dry to the touch within 2 hours and lightened up just a little the next day. I’ve read other reviews that say it gets darker, but maybe that’s related to the stain tone; the Natural Cedar does look very natural and really just adds a slight color tone to the natural wood. I applied this to my 6 year old cedar fence that had greyed. I pressure washed the fence, using only water, one Saturday and painted the next Saturday. It took me about 3 hours to stain 240 feet of 6′ high fence, and that included setup and clean up.

Regarding coverage, I used about 7 gallons to cover just over 1500 square feet, so about 200 feet per gallon, which is a little better than the 125′ estimate. If you’re fence is older, it will likely be drier and take more product.

The stain cleaned up fairly easily, although you do need mineral spirits (or just about any other paint thinner) to clean your equipment well when done.

I will definitely use this again in a few years (says 3-5 years for fences, so we’ll see) and highly recommend it if your in the market for a stain..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. How many years on before having to reapply?

I live at 9000 ft. in the mountains- .wind, rain, snow, UV. I try to touch
up every 2-3 years.

2. How many sq ft will 2.5 gallons cover?

depends. cover says 100 – 150 sq ft per gallon. I used 7.5 gallons on about 600sq ft of deck and barely had enough, that was 2 coats. 1st coat sucked up a lot, 2nd coat went a lot farther

3. Can I reapply this over the old coat when I need to?

I’d clean the boards the best you can and let them dry, and then yes, you can reapply it. It says so on the can.

4. In the reviews, everyone mentions the light oak color but I don’t see it available. Is it discontinued or renamed?

I bought 2 gallons of light oak about a month ago. Look again or call the company.
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

linderunit says: “This became by far my best experience ever staining and sealing my deck. After power washing and drying for 4 days, I shook this product up and poured it into my pump sprayer. First coat soaked in beautifully. 2nd coat really brought the project together. It has a nice even finish. Color- light oak is gorgeous. I used a brush sparingly to trim and take care of a couple puddles. My 10 year old deck looks the best it’s ever looked. Now to replace all the nails with screws and quit playing wack-a-mole.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I am applying this to a fence. Would you recommend it for fences? Also, if you have used this product how well is it holding up?

Using it for 10 years, great on fences. Apply W weed oil sprayer. Brush W 4″ throw away brush as needed. Time between coats varies W the look you want. 2-3 years looks great. At 5 years fading is noticeable. Apply when cool. Dampen surfaces to get soak in.

2. Can I use this on my new cream colored bamboo blinds? Unsure about the method they were colored, but almost no sheen. Want stain protection in kitchen

Hard to say without looking at the wood , but if the wood still looks porous enough we’re the Stain can soak in some I would think a light coat possibly 2 would do it. It’s very thin milky color but dries clear

3. Will be applying to white cedar fence. How dry does the wood have to be ?

I did not heed the “one year” to dry on the new portion of my deck.Did old and new at the same time when the new portion was perhaps 2 months old. There was a definite difference.I washed and brightened both. Also did two coats. The 2nd coat was done while the first coat was still wet as per instructions. Also brushed vs. rolled. The stain seeped into the older wood much better and the color is richer.Don’t believe the stain will last for years. In covered areas yes, it does. But my deck area that gets full S.Carolina sun, does not last the year.I re-stained last year and will be doing a layer of water proofing on horizontal surfaces this year in hopes that I won’t have to stain again for a while.I am still happy that I bought the water based just because of the clean up and the ease of re-staining even if I feel I had to do it much quicker than if I had used oil based.

4. will this work in paint gun

yes it will, that’s how I applied it.
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Steven H says: “After using oil-based stains on our +30 year old redwood deck for several years with poor results, typically only seeing about six months of protection, I decided to try something different this time and after much research ordered water-based DEFY Extreme. Once the deck was power washed, sanded, and brightened the DEFY was brushed on using the two-coat, wet on wet method described on the can. Because it happened to be a hot sunny day I installed a large tarp above to shade the area and found the product fairly easy to apply, it’s water thin and really penetrates the wood.

Rain water beads up like no other product I’ve seen, time will tell if it outlast the other products I’ve used but so far I’ve been impressed.

UPDATE: After 6 Months

Our deck receives direct sunlight from sunrise to late afternoon and is exposed to coastal fog throughout the year, often coated with a thin layer of moisture most mornings. In addition to these harsh environmental conditions the deck receives a fair amount of chlorinated water from our hot tub. The Defy stain held up better than any other product we’ve tried to date but after six months the areas exposed to direct sunlight most of the day no longer beaded water and required an additional “maintenance-coat” which went on easily and quickly with no prep outside of a quick wash.

The product did not peal and fading was minimal, areas that only received a few hours of direct sunlight still beaded water after six months..

The Superdeck website recommends cleaning the deck prior to staining.Of course they recommend using their deck cleaning product. As with any staining or painting project, 90% of the time is spent prepping the surface you plan to stain or paint, which obviously makes for a better result. They don’t specifically state that this must be done every 5 years, because it depends on the deck’s exposure to weather, UV rays, and temperature.I can tell you that my deck was previously stained with Superdeck, and I rented an orbital floor sander to sand the deck.I also sanded the top rails of the deck with a belt sander.I then pressure washed the entire deck and applied the Superdeck stain.I did not use their deck cleaning product, because I sanded the surfaces I planned to stain.Although it was a lot of work, I’m happy with the results! The majority of my deck gets direct sun most of the day, and is also exposed to snow in the winter. The original Superdeck stain that was applied had a lower VOC and lasted about 5 years, so I’m hoping going to a higher VOC will increase the longevity.Time will tell!Good luck!

2. What is the coverage per gallon?

1 gallon will cover 400 sq ft on an already stained deck. You will need at least 2 gallons for a newly built deck with no stain. I generally re-stain my deck applying 2 coats every year. Two coats will give you a more rich look and extra protection at that. I have tried many stains over the years and by far the Super deck stain out beats them all. I hope this helps!
