Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. What is the age for owning one of these knives in NY?

Mary, I would recommend checking with your local authorities(Police ,etc.) in your state as it varies. Im from the great state of Texas where it is practically mandatory (just kidding) to carry a knife as soon as you can walk – we won’t go into handgunsbut I believe generally if the blade is under 4 inches it’s okay – please check in your state.

2. is this knife made in america?

Mine doesn’t show a “made in” description. It does inform that the blade is Chinese steel (so most likely the whole knife is made in China). Although the price is higher I would recommend a benchmade as the quality seems also to be higher (just bought the benchmade for my wife and she won’t change with me)

3. I’ve had this knife for about 6 months and love it, What are your guys best ways of sharpening the blade?

Directly from Kershaw’s website. I’ve sent them two of my knives and they have great service. Even replaced the blade on one of them for free!”WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO SHARPEN MY KERSHAW KNIFE?””The easiest and surest way to make sure your knife stays sharp is to send it back to us for free sharpening when the knife becomes dull. Just pay for shipping it to our Tualatin, Oregon facility. We’ll sharpen and return it at no charge to you. We will be happy to sharpen your knife for free for as long as you own the knife. For more information on this service, visit our warranty section.”

4. Do you have to sign for this item or will they leave out at the door?

No signature required.

I work as a power lineman and in that trade you almost always need a sharp knife on you. After trying many brands and styles I’ve been using this knife for the last 3 years.

The best feature in my opinion is the knife is easily opened and closed with gloves on. I work outside and with high voltage so there’s times I need to access the knife quickly with large bulky rubber gloves on. The grips, assisted open and closing mechanism make this knife easy to use one handed with gloves on. That alone is a huge positive.

Also the blade lasts. It stays sharp long and is easily sharpened or you can send it back and they will sharpen it. Personally I’ve never needed there customer service but my coworker had to send the knife back and he said the interaction was top notch.

I actually life this knife better than the more expensive models I’ve owned because they have thinner metallic grips whereas this has the composite grips that are larger and fit better in your hand/work well with gloves on.

All around excellent knife and excellent company. Must buy totally worth the price in fact it’s a steal..

TheAA says: “I did a lot of research into the different types of Swiss Army knives to see which one I would use the most. I originally bought the Pioneer Alox Silver knife because I liked that its the same model that the actual Swiss Army soldiers used from the 60’s up till now. This knife is almost exactly the same as the Spartan in terms of size. It’s big and has two slots with tools. The Pioneer comes with a large blade, can opener with screwdriver, bottle opener with screw driver and sharp pointed edge for poking holes. I was pleased with
I did a lot of research into the different types of Swiss Army knives to see which one I would use the most.

I was pleased with the knife since it looks classy but I wanted something that was more useful for everyday use. I like the Spartan because its identical to the original Swiss knife, but I wanted to look further. I stumbled onto so many different models for a variety of uses. Tools such as the wood saw, pliers, magnifying glass for instance I found that I don’t use everyday. Plus I found that its better to use other more sturdier tools than a knife if you want to use pliers. The more tools make these knives too bulky and not ideal for carrying everywhere.

I wanted something simple, yet eclectic. I have a minichamp, which is great because it has tools like scissors, an orange peeler and a pen. But I found that I use scissors a lot.

Finally, I noticed the Climber and after much comparison, I decided its the best one for ME. Why? Because its not too bulky first off. It only has 3 slots for tools, making it slightly thicker than the Spartan but not as bulky as the Explorer. It has scissors which are perfect in size. It’s essentially like the Spartan but with the added scissors and parcel carrier(which I find to be useless for most cases). And honestly this is all you need unless you need to cut wood or watch insects from up close with a magnifying glass. This is perfect for the urban gentleman.

Some would prefer the Tinker because they find the separate philips screwdriver more useful than the corkscrew. Well fear not because the can opener, which comes on almost all swiss knives, has a screwdriver at the tip that’s perfect for even the smallest Philips heads. The the extra room for a large philips screwdriver is useless because you already have a tool for that. Plus the corkscrew is useful in party type situations. So pick this over the Tinker.

For those who want something more compact, try out the Compact model. This knife has only two slots but has almost everything including scissors. However, this knife consolidates the can opener and bottle opener. The catch? The tool is very thin and the tip isn’t good for Philips screws, only good for flat heads. Also, there is no small blade.

For those who don’t care for the corkscrew or scissors, get the Pioneer. Why? Because its essentially the same model used by Swiss soldiers and it looks classy. Additionally, the large blade is much bigger than the large blade of regular swiss knives.

But I recommend the Climber 100%. You even have more color options to choose from with this model. I would go with the classic red, that way everyone knows you’re holding an awesome Swiss Army Knife. Happy shopping!.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Is this knife made in the USA?

My knife blade says 1990 KAI Patented so my understanding is that it’s made in “Japan” at least my particular knife..

Either way, a good knife is a good knife regardless of where it happened to have been made.

My 2018’ VW GTI was assembled in Mexico for example but this doesn’t somehow change the fact that its regardless a very solid, well made automobile.

2. how well does the blade sharpen and how long does it stay sharp under use ??

It actually sharpens very well, and quickly! 8Cr13MoV is a high-grade stainless steel that is slightly softer than, say, AUS-8 (itss most comparative steel, some say). With a good diamond sharpener, I’ve found that the blade sharpens fast, and stays sharp under normal/moderately extreme use, from breaking down cardboard boxes to carving sandstone (though highly possible, the latter use is not a good use for any knife). Try the Smith’s PocketPal sharpener or one of Kershaw’s sharpeners. Hope that helps!

3. How strong was the handle? I’ve never seem “glass filled nylon” before and I was wondering if it was sturdy enough to stand up for hard duty?

Open the hood of your car. All that black plastic? Glass filled nylon. PA66GF35. Everything is made of it. It’s good stuff. Don’t worry.

4. Does the thumb stud protrude on both sides of the blade so that the blade can be opened one-handed in either hand with just the thumb?

I’d call the thumbstuds more of a blade stop than a thumbstud

They do protrude from each side of the blade but they are so close to the handle that it’s difficult to employ as a thumb stud

The flipper is perfect

It uses their speedsafe spring system so you should be fine with just the flipper

Scott Mayberry says: “For a short summary skip to the bottom. If you want a fair assessment of the sharpness/quality of the knife reading the whole things would be better. For the price I can’t knock it. It’s smooth when it opens and closes, has a good albeit small clip that isn’t too tight, and comes decently sharp. That being said there are some issues. For example, opening with the ‘flipper’ nub is smooth and has a satisfying click, but using the thumb tacks isn’t quite as easy or smooth and doesn’t open with the same click. For a short summary skip to the bottom.

So it seems like the hinge isn’t reinforced very well. While the handle does have a good grip I’m not a huge fan of the ‘edgy’ pattern, but I can’t take away points for that because I knew what it looked like when I bought it. It’s not too heavy but doesn’t feel cheap either. In short, for a little over twenty bucks this is a good knife. I got it to tear down boxes and do other basic work like that, and it does it’s job nicely. I can’t speak to the longevity of this blade or how well it holds its edge, but really when can you expect at this price point?

My main motivation for writing this post was to clear up how sharp the blade is. Some say it’s sharp as hell, others say it’s incredibly dull, but really the truth is it’s neither. Enthusiasts will knock the blade for being dull because they know how to properly sharpen a knife and buy more expensive knives. For those who buy this as their first knife they will say it’s sharp as can be because it does cut well. But I want to put this in perspective. This can easily cut through cardboard, thin rope like para cord, and other ‘typical’ things like that with a little bit of force, but nothing too excessive.
But I want to compare this blade to the spyderco tenacious to make a point. These blades are made out of the same steel, but the tenacious was double the price. This blade, from amazon without any sharpening, can shave arm hair (with a bit of force, but nothing too crazy) and easily slice through paper when doing the ‘paper test’. It cuts through the same materials listed above with noticeably more ease. But again, it was double the price for the same steel. You can either sharpen this blade yourself, or take it to someone who sharpens blades on the cheap and these knives would be mostly equal in terms of the edge. But would you really spend 5-10 bucks to have someone sharpen a $20ish blade?

In short: For the price it’s great. Can’t complain. It’s sharp enough so that it isn’t a problem, and the build quality exceeds what I would expect with a knife of this price. But if you have cash to burn and want something that comes really sharp from the factory then look at more expensive knives, and maybe other brands. Just remember, you get what you pay for. I fully expect this knife to have a short life because of it’s price, especially if I use it while camping. But if it does break, hey, it was only $20ish bucks..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Is this a chinese product? Thx.

Yes. A large part of Spyderco knife production is outsourced to foreign contractors in countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Italy, and China. 8Cr13MoV, a Chinese stainless steel tempered at the RC56 to RC58 range and used in the Tenacious, Persistence, Ambitious, Resilience, Grasshopper, Kiwi3 and Byrd lines of knives. Often compared to AUS-8, but with slightly more Carbon.

2. Does it come in a box with all the Spyderco paperwork

Nop, just the box with a little plastic bag with the knife inside!

3. What type of locking mechanism does this blade have?

The lock is interior to the frame. It blocks the base of the blade when opened. It easily pushes aside to return blade to closed.

4. is this assisted open?

No, no spring assist. There is a slight detent that holds it closed. Once you open it slightly past the detent the blade can easily flick open all the way. The action is very smoothe and the blade locks up tight.
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

Sandy Lewis says: “This review is actually from my husband as the knife was purchased by me for him for his birthday. He is the pickiest person when it comes to knives he has 3 Emerson, 4 bench made, bokker… you get the picture. He carries high quality knives everyday in his pocket. I was very hesitant to order this due to price point and where it is made. He will not even look at Chinese made knives. But, I read the reviews, looked at the spyderco website and made the decision to go with this one. I’m so happy because he absolutely loved
it. According to him it does not look or feel like a Chinese made knife. He says for price point has the appearance of a high end knife. He said a nice feature is the clip can be mounted on either end left or right. He is 6’6 has big hands and fits very well. The linear lock is solid and stable. Extremely sharp out of the box so cautiously handle it! He says it actually would better fit larger hands so bigger guys this one is for you. Highly recommend.

Includes 9 Functions: Blade Nail file with – Screwdriver Bottle Opener with – Magnetic Phillips Screwdriver – Wire Stripper Key ring Tweezers Toothpick History and Heritage In 1884, Master Cutler Karl Elsener opened a cutlery shop in Ibach, Switzerland. There, he and the cutlers’ union he formed produced the finest steel cutlery, finished with the now-famous proprietary edge preferred globally by professional and home cooks.

In 1891, Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldier’s Knife and in 1897 with the Officer’s Knife. In 1921, after the death of his mother, Victoria, and with the advent of stainless steel, then known as “inoxydable”””””””” and used in the production of his cutlery, Karl changed the name of the company to Victorinox. It is from those humble beginnings that a worldwide icon was born. Today, Victorinox is still owned and operated by the Elsener family, and both the company and family still resides in the small village of Ibach, Switzerland.

Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives The various tools are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Sharpening To re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur.

Cleaning After you’ve used your Swiss Army Knife for all of its various applications, such as cutting open numerous boxes, you may notice that the blades begin to stick together. Opening and closing the blades in warm water several times will allow the tools to easily move again. Once they have dried, it is recommended, to apply a small drop of oil between the blade or tool shank and the spring.

To optimally maintain the locking mechanism, periodically apply a drop of our recommended Swiss Army Knife Oil. the side.

More importantly, the Rally contains several handy mini-tools, including a small blade, a nail file with a screwdriver, a cap lifter with a magnetic Phillips screwdriver, a wire stripper, a toothpick, tweezers, and a key ring for easy transport. Victorinox attends to every detail, from selecting the finest materials to performing the final inspection. In addition, each individual tool has been hardened in a different way to stand up to its designated use. The Rally weighs 0.8 ounces and carries a lifetime warranty. Rally Tools Small blade Nail file with screwdriver Cap lifter with magnetic Phillips screwdriver Wire stripper Toothpick Tweezers Key ring About Victorinox In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines.

Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener’s mother, and “inox,” or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer’s and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Anyone tried bringing this on a plane in the US?

Yes, it was confiscated at the Colorado Springs airport on my way to Dallas last month. Bought it in Lucerne Switzerland in 1997. Thanks jerks!

2. I am looking for a knife for my grandson to whittle with. Is this too small?

Yes . . . it’s too small for whittling. I’d opt for a small pocket knife with a 2-blade (which would make the knife about 4 3/4″ long unfolded).A good choice would the “Old Timer 18OT Mighty Mite Lockblade Folding Pocket Knife.”

I’ve got one of those that is very very old (probably 50 or 60 years . . . belonged to my grandfather) and it’s still in great shape after much use.

3. Does this come with a tooth pick?

Yes it comes with a tooth pick and a tweezer. No scissors though.

4. Can you buy this knife in white color?

No, Victorinox does not produce this knife in white. Note that Victorinox will do special builds and there have been white ones. These are generally promotional items for large customers and are not available for retail.

The screwdriver is magnetic and seems to be made of unicorn horn. It manages to fit perfectly in every Philips screw bigger than a eyeglasses screw and smaller than the + symbol on the knife. Maybe this doesn’t sound impressive it’s a wider range of screws than any other screwdriver I’ve owned and it’s really, really handy to have in your pocket. It’s the primary tool in my house for any screws in any of my kid’s toys.

The file\flathead screwdriver is alright but nothing special. Also has tweezers and toothpick (seriously though, who uses a dull plastic toothpick?).

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. How does this knife hold up to saltwater? Looking for something to keep in my pocket while diving.

I have several Spyderco knives that I keep on me while diving and wade and kayak fishing and I haven’t had any corrosion issues. For diving I usually carry a Byrd (spyderco)Cara Cara rescue knife. It has a fully serrated blade that cuts through rope, line, webbing and even small gauge wire( most of entanglement hazards). The Byrd rescue knives are cheap but hold up well to abuse.

2. Where Is this model manufactured?

China, but in my opinion the quality and fit and finish is excellent. I carry this for work, very well made.

3. What is your actual use for the serrations?

The serrations help cut through tough material.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. well i just recieved one, and i opened it and i cant get it to close

On the top of the handle near the blade’s hilt or pivot screw there should be a raised nub of metal with lines going across. Pull rearward on this with your index finger to open the knife. Unlike a switchblade where the knife blade is ejected from inside the handle of the knife, these blades pivot open in an arc from the handle. To close the knife there is a piece of the underside of the knife integrated with the handle that locks the blade in place. You must push this piece to the left with your thumb while simultaneously pushing the blade toward you with your index finger. One the blade is at a right angle to the handle move your thumb to the back of the blade and continue to pull it toward you until it is safely inside the handle. Note this is a guide. Not responsible if you cut yourself by coming in contact with the blade.

2. Can I keep this in my car without getting into trouble?

There is nothing illegal about the knife. Just don’t try taking it through airport security, to the courthouse, etc and you will be fine. Keeping it in your car wouldn’t be a problem.

3. how do you close knife?

If you look closely at the image of the open knife, you’ll see a little tab-like lever in the finger notch. This is what locks the blade in the open position, preventing accidental closure. Push this to the outside with your thumb to your left (if you are holding the knife with the blade’s edge up) and it will move out of the way so you can then close the blade.

4. Is it a switch blade

No not a switch blade. It is spring assisted

Deborah D. Williams says: “I bought two different tactical knives this week. This one is the cheapest of the two and the best. It’s beautifully wrapped, and if it’s a gift, it looks great. The Blade is very sharp. The blade catches the blade well. Glass Shards on the handle. built-in seat belt cutter. Finger grip and texture comfortable, stable, non-slip fit. It also has a blade stop and a blade lock to ensure your hand is safe when used. It is better designed and manufactured than more expensive tools. of a similar quality steinbrook blade. I definitely prefer rush dear, and would love to use it for fishing, hunting and camping. Height.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Does this knife have a locking mechanism to prevent accidental closure?

No. It’s just a small pen-knife type knife; pressure from use keeps the blade from closing. Usually larger-bladed knives have a locking mechanism.

2. What do I use to sharpen the blade? I’ve had this over a year and love it, but I need to sharpen it but not ruin it by doing it wrong. Any suggestions

I use a diamond machining technology (DMT) sharpener–fine + medium surfaces.Actually, I use only the fine and amazingly enough that seems sufficient. The one I have no longer appears to be listed on Amazon, but I would think any fine DMT sharpener would be OK–they’re relatively inexpensive. The closest I can come to what I have ishttp://www.amazon.com/DMT-D4F-Dia-Sharp-Continuous-Diamond/dp/B002D4K90M/ref=sr_1_27?ie=UTF8&qid=1392345271&sr=8-27&keywords=diamond+machining+technology

3. Is this hard to open/close

Absolutely not. It opens and closes easily.

4. Does this knife have a sheatth???

This knife does not come with a sheath. It is meant to be carried in your pocket

JamieJ says: “My Dad had a knife much like this one and I lost it after I had begged to borrow it. That was many, many years ago and when I got interested in “whitteling” and found this little beauty, I was a happy camper. Most people won’t even know what I’m talking about, but it’s very relaxing (has no other purpose) to just sit on my sunny deck with some apple tree trimmings and whittle them away into splinters. Yep. At 73 I live a very complicated life.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. I got the knife and it won’t close. I watched the video but it didn’t help. Any ideas?

All of these knives seem to come from the factory overly tightened. I’ve got 14 knives in my collection and on all of them I’ve had to back out the pivot screw, put a few drops of Tetra gun oil or EWL 2000 on the pivot post and then tighten the pivot screw back in a little at a time. While doing this, I’d check the operation of the blade to make sure it’s easy to open and close, but doesn’t wobble from side to side. The more I opened and closed it, the easier it got.

2. How long is the blade itself?

BLADE LENGTH: 87 ММ (3,42″)

3. What country is it made in

It is designed in Ukraine, and produced in China. We are working over 15 years with only trusted manufacturers.

4. Is this legal to carry for self-defense in new york?

Google will answer that for you.
Look up what is legal in NY (length, style, etc.), then look at the pics that buyers have posted, and you’ll know.
What Real Customers Say About This Product?

B. Andrews says: “I use my pocket knives a lot and really abuse them. This one has a good edge from the factory and a little stropping makes it perfect. It is light weight for the size. The locking mechanism is very secure. It has little to no play in the blade when locked. I’m not a fan of the kind of lock that is used, but it is the standard in this price range. At least they did a good job of implementing it. The belt clip I use on my pocket. It seems substantial enough and it is long enough the knife
has not fallen out yet. The screws are all torx so it can be tightened up as needed.
Overall, I am very happy with the knife and it has become my every day work knife now..
