Best way to sand a deck before painting – Buying Guide And Recommendation

This top 10 best way to sand a deck before painting review starts by looking at the different technologies and then after lists the best products.

1. DEWALT Random Orbit Sander, 5-Inch (DWE6421K)

Style:Sander The DWE6421K 5-inch Single Speed Random Orbital Sander Kit with hook and loop pad has a 3-amp motor that delivers 12,000 OPM. The separate counterweight reduces vibration and along with the rubber overmold grip provides comfortable sanding. A shorter design allows users to get closer to the work surface and the one-handed locking dust bag attaches securely to the sander to aid in dust collection or the user can attach the power sander directly to the DWV010 or DWV012 dust collectors.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. What does hand powered mean in power source?

It is moved around by hand when on. Don’t worry you don’t have to hand crank it.

2. Does it use Velcro sandpaper pads?

According to the description this sander uses sanding discs which attach with hook and loop, which I think is the same thing as Velcro.

3. So this uses velcro to adhere the sand paper to the tool instead of a hook&loop system? if that’s the case, is paper hard to find?

Yes it uses Velcro.
They carry sand paper for these at most home improvement stores.

4. What is the purpose of the batteries? It is electric but the description says it requires a battery.

Batteries Included? No
Batteries Required? No

I absolutely love woodworking, but I also absolutely hate sanding. Standing there what seems to be hours of tedious sanding through the various grits with a dusk mask on, a fan to blow away the dust particles or a dust collector octopus hose attachment can be annoying, especially if you have an uncomfortable sander in your hands.

I currently have a Porter Cable 6″ sander. It is a beast to handle. The cylindrical main body grip is uncomfortable and the ninety degree side handle is an aid to sanding large surfaces, but at times you have you have to take off the side handle to sand in tight spots, it simply gets in the way. The dust collector hood is inefficient and again you have an hose attachment hooked up to a dust collector that you have to drag around the shop. If you don’t have the dust collector hooked up, be prepared to sand in dust cloud and get covered with fine dust particles. To make matters worst, this sander is heavy, sanding for long periods of time can be tedious.

I was looking at something that was compact, had a good center of gravity (unlike the 6″ Porter Cable where the center of gravity is off set to the side along the main body), is powerful, and provide a good dust collection bag that actually works (and we all know that some sanders come with dust collection bags but are an after thought and really collect nothing but air). Most of my power tools are Dewalt (love the 20V hammer drill and driver set) so the credible factor goes way up with me looking at Dewalt tools to use. They are affordable, are good quality, and last a long time.

After reading through the Amazon reviews of the DWE6421K I decided to order one. When the sander arrived, I plugged it in and turned it on and the first thing I noticed was that there a lot of air coming out of the dust port. I own a Dewalt DW735 planer (love this tool also) and the dust port on the DW735 is so strong that all you have to do is hook it up to a dust collector and turn on the planer, there is no need to turn on the dust collector because of the force of the planer blows dust and chip particles right into the dust collector bag. The DWE6421K sander on the start up reminded me of the DW735 planer, there was a lot of air coming out of the dust port.

I hooked up a dust bag and went to sand down an old furniture piece with a old varnish on it, I thought for sure this would plug up and bog down the sander, I was pleasantly wrong. The sander did not slow down, I didn’t have to push down so hard because the center of gravity was right over the main body. Even when I pushed down on the sander it hardly bogged down. With an 80 grit it took of the varnish with no problem. The thing that I noticed that there was very little or no dust coming out from under or the sides of the sander. I opened up the dust bag and noticed that the dust had been efficiently placed in the dust bag. I continued to sand my project from 80, 120, 150, and 220 grits and I noticed that the pig tail swirl marks were barely noticeable. I hand finished with 220 and 400 grit. When I sprayed the finish on, the project came out beautiful, and the Dewalt sander was a significant contributing factor to the great finish.

All I can say is Wow! what a great feeling, a powerful sander, that has a dust collection bag that actually works, is light, maneuverable, and is not fighting me along the way to sanding down a project. Throw in the fact that the sander is only $59.00 what a great deal. Take my word for it, I have been building fine furniture for thirty years (any Sam Maloof fans out there!) and any time I can find a tool that is efficient, affordable, easy on the body, and be subjected to the rigors of daily use, would be in my arsenal of tools on tackling those woodworking projects.

I give this sander my highest recommendation! I might actually enjoy sanding…..well, not really lol!.

2. Would you recommend this product for sanding stairs and a banister?

No. This is for fine detail work, not really for large surfaces. For that you’d want a larger orbital sander. I use this Mouse when I sand down guitar finishes, it helps me get in those tight places and around corners with precision.

3. does this plug in.. i see a cord and then n some photos I dont…

this does plug in. however we had this about a week and a half and the sander fell apart. find one at home depot or lowes at least there is no problems with returning it

4. where can I find the parts? I need the correct sheets and a pad replacement. I don’t find any generic sheets that satisfy the hole pattern.

You can buy them here at Amazon.com. I’ve found them at Ace Hardware, Home Depot did not have them available in California. You aren’t likely to find generic pads for this small sander.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. If i want to pant a door white. Which should I use the 180 grit or the 80 grit to remove gloss and sand it?

For the best finish, remove any existing paint and start again with primer then gloss. For sanding you need to work your way up through the grades. The lower the number, the coarser the sanding so start with a low number – 40 or 80- to remove the paint. Then work your way up through the numbers – ideally no more than 40 at a time – until all the scratches and swirls are removed from the underlying wood. Don’t skip too many grades each time or you will leave scratches and compromise the final finish. Ideally end on a 240 grit or higher before painting.

2. Is it powerful?

Play Video

3. can you attach polishing pads

Yes, but the size of the polishing pads you used must be match the size of this sanding pad (diameter of this sander is 125mm/ 4.92in).

4. How is the quality of this sander

TackLife for a not so known brand makes some pretty good tools. I have a few power and cordless items and no complaints here. Great for the price. I have this sander and it has been great for home use / I probably wouldn’t pick for every day commercial type use but otherwise yes its great. Again can’t beat TackLife prices

David Block says: “For a good couple of years, I used the old Black & Decker random orbital sander. 20 years ago, I didn’t know any better. And I wouldn’t have then – and I guess I wouldn’t now – buy one of the really nifty brands for myself. Why? Well, to say that I’m a DIYer is giving me a compliment I don’t deserve – I’m a poopie head (grandfather talk) with projects. And I didn’t do a lot of projects. I was working. I had “a profession”. For a good couple of years, I used the old Black & Decker random orbital sander. No time. Very important in my own mind. You get the picture.

So now, in my 70s, and especially during this Covid pandemic, I have lots of time. Can’t play pickleball. Can’t, or won’t, watch the news. Tired of stewing over stuff. You get the picture. And my sweetie’s brother-in-law, who is very good with wood, gives us this beautiful piece of cedar. So me and the sweetie stare at it, and we decide to make a table for the screened porch. Beautiful cedar grain. Know what I mean?

Plenty… plenty!… to sand. The old B&D is doing it. OK. But my hand, and especially my wrist, get tired after a few minutes. And the dust catcher on the B&D is worthless. Might as well use that black little bag to hold a chaw since there is no dust inside it. Plus I’m coughing and sneezing and… umm… hawking my way to loogie land. Years of smoking (remember Luckies?), plus years of hay fever: I have “twitchy airways”, my doctor tells me.

So I decide to get another random orbital sander. I read up on just about all of them, even the expensive (around $100 or more) ones. I decided on the Tacklife. I already have one of their dremel-type machines, which works great. The price didn’t strain my self-image or my fixed income. There were at least two YouTubes by people who seemed reputable saying it was worth the money (even though in each case Tacklife sent them, free, a sander to evaluate).

I figured the Tacklife random orbital sander was “good enough” for me. I was wrong. It is GREAT for me. And I think it would be for you, too.

First of all, the dust catcher actually works. It really picks up just about all the grit, even with a 240 grit disc. Makes my breathing easier. My nose doesn’t run while sanding. I’m not sneezing and coughing.

But you really have to try the design and hold this thing and use it. I’m thinking that the “center of gravity” and the “center of percussion” are just about on the same axis through the tool. So there is no sense of weight, and almost no vibration. Controlling it is easy. You just let the weight of the sander be the force, and it will be with you. (Couldn’t resist). You don’t use your wrist to control anything, like with the B&D. You just lay your hand on top of the Tacklife, resting it lightly, and guide it with the big muscles of arm and shoulder. So you don’t fatigue.

I played around with the variable speeds on the Tacklife. I’m not sure I know what I’m doing with them. But I did feel very proud of myself when I used the dial. My sweetie was impressed by that, and I mean, impressed a lot. I did not tell her I had no idea what I was doing.

Bottom line: the Tacklife random orbital sander is absolutely worth the money. It is way better than “good enough”. It is “best”: best for my purposes, best for my dollars, best for my self-image (and that’s important when you are old).

I have no problem recommending the Tacklife random orbital sander without qualification. I mean, I don’t know what I would get with a DeWalt or a Bosch. But now, I have no interest in finding out. I’m happy..

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. What do you use to clean the finished product? I like to use bleach in the kitchen to clean. Can you use bleach on this? Can you use a scrub sponge?

No, don’t use bleach or a scrub sponge. You can use hydrogen peroxide to kill germs and a soft cloth.

2. Does it scratch easily?

Unfortunately, it does scratch easily. I used this in April 2018 and followed all directions- including the prep which is the most important step. I have taken verygood care of the counter tops- no scrubbing, mild soap to clean, using a cutting board for everything, used a towel or pot holder underneath anything that may potentially damage it. It started to wear off in some places and scratch in August 2018. I’m here looking to see if there is a guarantee for the product. The end result looksfabulous (until it scratches) , so I am trying to find out what my options are. I hate the thought of having to buy another kit because I’ve followed all directions. Hope that this is able to help somebody !

3. A friend of mine said you had to scrub your counters before you can paint them? What do you scrub them with?

Having done the counter in my last house (and now shopping for this to do in my new house!) I would say it depends on what you have now. I had linoleum from the 1940’s in that house and cleaned it with TSP, rinsed super well and then did lightly sand to ensure a clean and highly adhesive surface. It help up PERFECTLY for the year or so I lived there, I used the Bombay Sapphire and it was gorgeous.

4. Ariel, What did you use to apply the Helmsman Spar Urethane? Brush or roller? If roller what type? Thanks.

I used the same roller that came in the kit. Applied two coats sparingly, let them dry completely between coats. It does give a nice texture.

Peter North says: “I bought the Sicilian Sand finish for 15 year old yellow, Formica counter tops. I almost wrapped the counter tops with a rubber adhesive cover, but I’m so glad I tried this first. The entire project took me about 3 days, or 15 hours spread out over 3 days, and I had 2 kids bugging me in between. Make sure to really clean your counter tops before putting this stuff on or else the paint will not stick. Use a razor blade to scrape anything you may have missed and you should be ready to paint. Tip: Dab the entire counter

Make sure to really clean your counter tops before putting this stuff on or else the paint will not stick. Use a razor blade to scrape anything you may have missed and you should be ready to paint.

Tip: Dab the entire counter space with one color before moving onto the next color, don’t smear it or press too hard. Also, don’t get discouraged if you dab too hard or something, because this paint is very forgiving. At one point, I was so pissed I had to stop the job for a half a day. I decided to continue and somehow pulled it off. The key is to “keep on layering,” and the color will eventually turn out the way you intended.

Also, you’re not going to see the actual beauty of your new tops UNTIL the top coat is put on. That’s the key to making your new tops look, feel and shine like real granite. It’s very important to remember this so as to not get unmotivated. I honestly feel as if my counters are new and I simply restored them versus just putting a band-aid on them. They’re so clean and the surface is just awesome. Already got a ton of compliments. Also, did I make any mistakes? Yes. Has anyone else noticed? No. If anyone is looking that closely then I probably wouldn’t invite them into my home anyway. The texture of this paint job tricks your eyes into not seeing any imperfections.

Buy it!

Buy it!

*UPDATE*

2.5 years later and it’s still great. No issues at all..

1. Do u have 180 sandpaper or 220 ?

I bought both the 80 and the 240 grit plus my sander came with a variety pack. I used mostly the 240 as I was only sanding the joint compound over the paper tape covering the joints in the drywall. It worked fine.

Chris B. says: “I’ve rented the expensive porter cable sander for prior renovation, this Wen accomplishes the same thing. Getting a clean finish is mainly about technique. Sure it wobbles a bit if you let it chatter, but it’s easy to adjust pressure, direction of travel, tool orientation, arm movement, or RPM to make it stop, same goes for the porter cable. Take all this with a grain of salt, I’ve only sanded <2000sq ft combined with either brand. My mistake with the rental is that I sanded too much. Near zero dust if you have a filter sock or other prefilter thingy on
I’ve rented the expensive porter cable sander for prior renovation, this Wen accomplishes the same thing. Near zero dust if you have a filter sock or other prefilter thingy on your vacuum. Didn’t bother to put up plastic for what you see in video. No thin layer of dust on nearby surfaces. Just let the pad breath occasionally so you don’t cake up and reduce suction. Brush off your filter sock when you hear your vacuum motor starting to stress and your CFMs drop (every 10-15min?). Wen specific feedback: -No complaints on build quality. -Pad size is fine, the included sandpaper does not hit bristles. -You may need a hose adapter, I just taped together something I had on hand. (I’m usually against using tape) General Tips, some of it common sense: -Scrape off your high spots before sanding, careful not to gouge or else you get to mud some more -Center the sandpaper as best you can, this really matters -Don’t overheat your vacuum. Reduce suction with breather on Wen if you have to, more prefably where your hose diameters change -Use a bright flashlight parallel with the surface to easily check for imperfections. Gradual humps are fine and expected if you floated a non-recessed seam.
-Don’t oversand your new/untouched drywall, the paper will start to pill, feather, etc
-Let the pad and hoses breathe ocassionally to clear any caking to keep your CFMs up
-If you’re new at this, there’s an art to not sanding too much or too little. Have confidence, you’ll do great.
-Use a filter sock or prefilter device

For the project in this video, the finish became good enough to project directly on the painted wall with an Epson 5040ub. ~150”. Used to be a fireplace. Will eventually have a ceiling mounted recessed drop down screen and a new fireplace. Only temporary. Video wasn’t really meant for a review, but here you go..

TOP 500 REVIEWER says: “This is a great little sander. I checked out the videos which are really nice but I actually didn’t even need them because it was so easy to use but the videos were nice to look at Since I never really sanded before with a machine. I really like that it’s light and it works really well, it’s a very good quality and it’s got a nice point to it In the front so that you can get in to close spaces or small spaces and you don’t have to do it by hand. But the best thing about this is

it’s got a dust recovery system whereby it takes most of the dust away and puts it in a little container that you can empty. Of course it won’t take all the dust but none of them will but this one takes most of it and I’m really so happy with it!!in the front so that you can get into close spaces or small spaces and you don’t have to do it by hand. Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Can this gun use 100 grit silicon carbibe, and what the smallest tip size, I do stained glass windows…

“Yes, it can use grit silicon carbibe and abrasive size range is 46~100. The tip size is 5.0m/m ( only one size)”

2. I am not sure if this one has that feature but a similar one has this feature called legerity function. Does anyone know what it is?

Legerity refers to quickness and agile With that said, this sandblaster is lightweight, quick / easy to use, and ergonomic. So when someone says Legerity is a feature I assume they are simply talking about the ease of use Hope this helps.

3. I want to use this under a car, shooting up into a rusty frame, is it useless upside down?

Gravity fed means it will not work upside down. You would want a pressure fed canister sand blaster. unless you are able to flip the car upside down.

4. will this remove corrosion from alloy wheels?

Hi there and thank you for the great question. Yes, our sandblaster will easily remove corrosion from alloy wheels. I would suggest starting with a less abrasive media such as soda.

Most Frequently Asked Question:

1. Do you still need to tent the sanding area to contain dust?

Yes you will want to ensure the area or room is closed off from the rest of your home. Also close off the air ducts or cover the radiators, if you have them. And don’t forget to wear a mask, because drywall compound dust goes everywhere, no matter how careful you are. This WEN 6377 machine made the sanding job a heck of a lot easier and faster. But there was still dust to contend with.

2. Where can i buy repair parts at

The price on these suggests you buy a new one. Or pull a macgyver.

3. Never heard of Wen products is this thi g any good? using to renno a few rooms at home

Actually bought this with great anticipation and expectation. I wish I could say it lived up to them. Sorry to say I only used it once
1) did not have anywhere near the sanding power I expected.
2) Used up pads , which tend to be expensive, very quickly. Machine was absolutely ineffective sanding the dried joint compound. I think if the compound was applied lighter might do better.
3) Machine is a little unwieldy. Arms can get a little tired holding machine on overhead sanding too.
4) Can’t really remember but hooking up the dustless port to shop vac didn’t turn out to well either.Had to duct tape connection to keep it together
I wish I could give a better report but this has been my experience.
Waste of my time and my money.

4. will the sandpaper avaible in 320 or 380 400

Yes.

bryan bright says: “I know these sanders collect dust pretty good. Problem is they are a little bit wild and can cut through or spin on one side more than the other. What i have often thought is , why dont they make a vibrating one rather than a spinning one. When i saw the triangle head on this i thought ” thats it !” it must not spin. And sure enough just what i wanted. Round head spins for fast removal; and triangle head just vibrates for fine finish. Yes its heavy but thats the price you pay for dust collection. My only
real gripe is the cost of the sandpaper. Wen ONLY sells 10 packs , which means your paying a buck and a half or so per sheet. Aleko brand sells 50 and 100 packs of the round paper which cuts the price per sheet in half. However the hole pattern is not the same. So i drilled out my base plate to match both hole patterns and cleaned the velcro holes out with a soldering iron. Now i can use the good sander with the affordable paper..
